Abstract

At present, stunting in children aged 3-5 years is the biggest child health problem experienced by most developing countries including Indonesia. A survey conducted in January 2023 with local health officials found that out of 170 toddlers, 30 were malnourished in the form of underweight, 18 toddlers and 12 toddlers were indicated to be stunted with parents who had low economic status. The general objective of this activity is focused on achieving health independence through establishing information centres and stunting management facilities managed by health cadres as an effort to prevent an increase in stunting prevalence as well as a facility to increase the income of families who have children at risk of nutritional problems, families who are indicated to be stunted through stunting centres. The activity method uses an assessment-based community development approach through seminars, training and mentoring. The instrument uses questionnaires and checklists. Indicators of achievement are the level of knowledge, skill level and income of families with infants and toddlers at risk of malnutrition and stunting. The target partners are 55 health cadres and 55 mothers who have babies and toddlers aged 5 years in the Sidoarjo area. Abstract

Parenting plays an important role in early childhood emotional development. This study aims to measure the effectiveness of parenting education on changes in parenting styles and its impact on children's emotions. Using a quantitative approach with a quasi-experiment one group pretest-posttest design, the intervention was given to 20 parents in Wage Village, Sidoarjo, in the form of short counseling lasting approximately 20 minutes. Data analysis was carried out by paired sample t-test. The results showed a significant decrease in authoritarian parenting and an increase in democratic parenting tendencies. In addition, there was a significant decrease in children's emotional, behavioral, and hyperactivity problems (p < 0.05). However, peer relationships and prosocial behavior did not show significant changes. Parenting education has been shown to be effective in improving parenting patterns and supporting early childhood emotional regulation.

Abstract

Parenting education programs are widely promoted as a means of improving parental practices and supporting early childhood development. However, evidence regarding their comprehensive impact on children’s emotional and social development remains mixed. This study aims to critically assess the effectiveness of a short-term parenting education intervention in modifying parenting patterns and influencing emotional development outcomes among children aged 1–5 years in Wage Village, Taman District, Sidoarjo Regency. A quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest approach was employed. Fivety parents were recruited using purposive sampling. Participants completed a validated questionnaire measuring two dimensions of parenting (authoritative and authoritarian) and five indicators of children’s emotional development. The intervention consisted of a 20-minute counseling session on positive parenting strategies. Data were analyzed using paired sample t-tests with a significance level of α = 0.05. Findings revealed a statistically significant reduction in authoritarian parenting scores (p = 0.000) and improvements in certain child emotional indicators, specifically behavioral problems and hyperactivity (p < 0.005). However, no significant changes were observed in peer relationships (p = 0.398) or prosocial behavior (p = 0.185). While the intervention showed measurable short-term effects on reducing rigid parenting styles and some behavioral issues, its influence on children’s social competencies remained negligible. These results suggest that short-term parenting education may be effective for addressing immediate behavioral concerns but is insufficient for fostering comprehensive social and emotional growth. Factors such as peer interaction, school environment, and cultural context likely play a stronger role in shaping these aspects. Sustainable, multi-sector strategies integrating community engagement, school-based programs, and ongoing parental support are recommended. Parenting education should be implemented as part of a broader, long-term framework to ensure lasting improvements in both parental practices and children’s holistic development.
