This study aimed to examine the relationship between smokers' knowledge levels and the incidence of periodontal disease among the community in Tongke-Tongke Village, East Sinjai District, Sinjai Regency. An observational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach was used. A total of 40 respondents were selected through purposive sampling based on predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were collected using a questionnaire to assess knowledge levels and a CPITN examination sheet to evaluate periodontal status. Data analysis was conducted using Spearman correlation tests with the help of SPSS software. The results showed that the smokers' knowledge level was categorized as moderate, while the community's periodontal disease status was generally categorized as poor. Statistical testing indicated a significant relationship between smokers' knowledge levels and periodontal disease, with a p-value of 0.023 (p < 0.05). Thus, it can be concluded that there is a relationship between smokers' knowledge levels and periodontal disease status in Tongke-Tongke Village, East Sinjai District, Sinjai Regency.

Abstract

Dental and oral health problems are common in elementary school children, one of which is cavities. This tooth damage occurs because children often consume sweet, soft, and sticky foods whose remains remain in the mouth for a long time and are not cleaned immediately. Most tooth decay in children is not only caused by the habit of consuming sweet foods, but can also be influenced by various factors, including proper and consistent brushing habits. Tooth brushing habits also affect the level of dental and oral hygiene. This study aims to determine the relationship between tooth brushing habits and the level of dental and oral hygiene of students at SD 196 Mangasa, Bulupoddo District, Sinjai Regency. This type of research is an observational analytical study with a cross-sectional design. The data will be analyzed using univariate analysis to see the distribution of research variables and bivariate analysis with the non-parametric Mann-Whitney test to analyze the relationship between tooth brushing habits and the level of dental and oral hygiene. The results of the study showed that the description of good student tooth brushing habits was (31%) and less good was (69%) and the description of good student tooth and oral hygiene was (5%), moderate (90%), and bad was (5%). The results of the mann whitney statistical test p = 0.034 showed a significant relationship between tooth brushing habits and the level of dental and oral hygiene.  Keywords: Habits; brushing teeth; dental and oral hygiene

Abstract

Background: Dental caries among elementary school students remain high to this day. The occurrence of dental caries is often linked to poor oral hygiene, leading to damage in the tooth's hard tissues. A promotive and preventive approach is necessary, especially for elementary school students during the critical period of transitioning from primary to permanent dentition. Objective: This community engagement program aimed to improve dental hygiene and oral health among elementary school students through education, mass toothbrushing activities, and giving topical fluoride. Method: The methodology included dental hygiene and caries examinations, followed by educational sessions, mass toothbrushing activities, and the administration of topical fluoride to protect teeth from caries attacks. The evaluation of success is determined by comparing the oral hygiene index before and after the activity. Results: The evaluation results indicate that the educational outreach and mass toothbrushing campaign have had a positive impact on improving the overall oral hygiene levels of students. The number of students classified under the "good" category has increased, while those in the "fair" and "poor" categories have shown a decrease. Conclusion: The comprehensive approach, comprising dental health education, mass toothbrushing sessions, and the administration of fluoride during this community service initiative, has proven to yield positive benefits in enhancing the oral hygiene of students.

Abstract

Dental caries is a common oral health problem among elementary school children and is largely influenced by low levels of knowledge and improper tooth-brushing practices. This study aims to develop a digital picture storybook as an educational medium and to assess its feasibility and effectiveness in improving children’s knowledge of proper tooth-brushing techniques. The study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model, which includes the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Product validation was conducted by material and media experts. Field testing was carried out with 30 students from grades III and IV at UPT SPF SDN Tamamaung, Makassar. Data were analyzed using the Shapiro–Wilk normality test and paired t-test. Material expert validation yielded a feasibility score of 75.56% (feasible), while media expert validation resulted in a score of 83.75% (highly feasible). Students’ responses regarding the media’s appearance and attractiveness showed a score of 95.3% (highly feasible). Pre-test and post-test data were normally distributed (p>0.05). The paired t-test results indicated a significant increase in knowledge following the educational intervention using the digital media (p<0.001). These findings indicate that the developed digital picture storybook is not only feasible but also effective in improving elementary school students’ knowledge of proper tooth-brushing techniques.

Abstract

Oral and dental health is an important aspect of overall health, especially in children. However, many children still have limited knowledge and poor dental health behaviors. Dental health education, particularly toothbrushing education using animated video media, is needed to improve children’s knowledge and dental health practices. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of toothbrushing education using animated video media on the oral health knowledge of elementary school students. The method used was quantitative research with a pre-experimental design in the form of a pretest–posttest group design. The study population consisted of 418 students from SDN 62 Palisi, Maros Regency, with 120 samples selected through stratified random sampling representing grades 1–6. Data were analyzed using SPSS 20 with univariate and bivariate tests, including the Kolmogorov–Smirnov normality test, t-test, or Wilcoxon test. The results showed that toothbrushing education using animated video media was effective in improving students’ oral health knowledge, with a p-value of <0.001, indicating statistical significance at p < 0.05. The study concludes that animated video-based toothbrushing education is effective in increasing students’ knowledge. It is recommended that schools utilize animated videos in learning activities or extracurricular programs. The animated videos produced are expected to be used by teachers as learning tools and as promotional media to enhance knowledge on maintaining oral and dental health.
