Abstract

This article identifies the cultural values of Sara Pataanguna in strengthening inter-ethnic harmony in Baubau, South-East Sulawesi Province. The research is qualitative research conducted in the area settled by various ethnic groups such as Buginese, Torajan, Balinese, Ambonese, Javanese, and Chinese. In collecting data, we used a documentation study, in-depth interviews, and observations. Data analysis in this study was conducted interactively through three activity lines, namely data reduction, presentation, and conclusion. The results show that the cultural values of Sara Pataanguna were sufficient to contribute to social-ethical norms, which are the legacy of Buton's ancestors since the Buton Sultanate ruled the land. These cultural values form the basis for the Butonese and the migrant's own values living in Baubau since, in principle, these values (from local Butonese and from the migrants) synergize each other. The presence of migrant ethnic groups contributes to cultural values and mutual symbiosis of the social structure in Baubau.

Abstract

This study investigated the exclusion of local ecological knowledge in marine resource governance by examining the case of the Bajo community in Torosiaje, Gorontalo Province, Indonesia. Using a qualitative ethnographic approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis. The findings revealed that the exclusion of traditional ecological knowledge was not merely incidental, but it was rooted in structural power asymmetries, institutional neglect, and epistemological bias. This exclusion undermined ecological sustainability, disrupts cultural practices, and weakened the role of Indigenous communities as environmental stewards. By employing the frameworks of Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) and Political Ecology, the study provided a critical analysis of how state-led, technocratic policies marginalize Indigenous knowledge systems. The research contributes to global discourses on ecological justice and inclusive governance by demonstrating the need to re-centre Indigenous epistemologies in environmental decision-making. This study offers a novel perspective by linking epistemic exclusion to the broader challenges of marine policy reform and sustainability in the Global South.

Abstract

In this chapter, the research aims to discover Otanaha Fort's existence in the current context. The research uses a qualitative-phenomenological approach, carried out in Dembe I Village, Gorontalo (July-December 2024), and data is collected through observation, interviews, FGDs, and tourist surveys—a total of 16 informants. The results of the study showed. That Otanaha Fort is recognized as a cultural heritage through national and regional regulations, including Law No. 11 of 2010. However, threats such as physical degradation and weak legal sanctions remain challenges. This fort has an important role in the identity of the Gorontalo people, reflected in the oral tradition and the tourism sector. Although the number of tourists has increased, their contribution to PAD has decreased. Revitalization efforts have been made, but less attention has been paid to historical conservation. The main obstacles include coordination between agencies, limited accessibility, and inadequate tourist facilities. Infrastructure improvements, strategic promotions, and sustainable conservation are needed to increase the attractiveness of Otanaha Fort.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the role of Islamic orphanages (Lembaga Kesejahteraan Sosial Anak, LKSA) grounded in the values of Progressive Islam (Islam Berkemajuan) in shaping children’s character, leadership, and social engagement. Employing a qualitative approach, this research utilizes participatory observation and in-depth interviews conducted at the Amrullah Aisyiyah Orphanage in Limbung. Data were collected over a month period and analyzed using a thematic approach guided by the pedagogical framework of Progressive Islam. The findings reveal that daily religious routines within the orphanage play a fundamental role in instilling discipline and moral identity among children. Skills training programs, integrated with Islamic values, significantly contribute to fostering self-reliance and leadership capabilities. Moreover, the institution’s active involvement in non-resident child development illustrates its critical role in empowering the surrounding community. The Progressive Islam framework has proven to be an effective foundation for the holistic integration of spiritual, social, and vocational development. This research enriches the discourse on faith-based character education and highlights the potential of Islamic orphanages as agents of social transformation. The findings serve as a reference for designing educational policies and programs in LKSAs and provide a basis for further studies on the role of religious institutions in community development.
