Abstract

Utilization of plants as food wrappers is a local wisdom that needs to be preserved. The preservation of traditional knowledge can be done through learning media. This research aims to produce valid learning media and obtain a positive response from students. The research uses Research and Development (R&D) with the ADDIE development model consisting of 5 stages: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. Data collection was obtained from interviews, observations, and questionnaires. Data were analyzed using a Likert scale questionnaire. Based on the validation results, the development of an ethnobatany-based encyclopedia on wrapping plants of the Malay Tribe in Meliau Sub-district obtained a highly valid assessment from subject matter experts (91.67%), media experts (95.83%), and valid from language experts (79.86%). In the small-scale trial, 14 students responded positively by 76.67%, and in the large-scale trial, 42 students responded positively by 89.80%, based on aspects of content, language, implementation, and appearance. It can be concluded that the Ethnobotany-based Encyclopedia on wrapping plants of the Malay Tribe in Meliau sub-district, developed as a learning media, is highly suitable for use in the learning process and has received a positive response. The successfully developed encyclopedia media contains the morphological characteristics of plants, food products wrapped with them, and QR codes displaying the process of food wrapping using wrapping plants. This encyclopedia media can also serve as a means of preserving the local wisdom of the Malay community in Meliau Sub-district in utilizing plants as eco-friendly food wrappers.

Abstract

Students' learning abilities, especially about plants, must be broader and more diverse. The lack of knowledge about the existence of plants in the environment so that they forget the role of the plants themselves for life. This study aims to analyze the percentage of plant blindness in secondary school students. The method used in the research is descriptive qualitative. In this study, data collection used questionnaires and interviews, data analysis was used to identify plant blindness in students in recognizing local vegetables by using statistical methods. The results showed that junior high school students had a higher rate of plant blindness than senior high school students. With a score range of ≥70%, junior high school students received 37.77% and senior high school students received 76.20%. Junior high school students with a score range of ≤70 were 62.23% and senior high school students were 23.8%, there is a considerable difference in value between the two value categories. In the future, students are expected to be more interested in knowing plants, especially local vegetables so that they can prevent plant blindness and can conserve local vegetables, besides that, teachers can make local vegetables a new learning resource for students.

Abstract

Profile of students’ creative thinking and conceptual understanding is essential to create an initial description of students’ competencies in overcoming their learning difficulties. The research aims to describe profile of concept understanding and creative thinking skills of 7thgrade students of all SMP Negeri (public junior high school) in Rasau Jaya sub-district, Kubu Raya Regency, West Kalimantan, Indonesia in photosynthesis content. The research uses qualitative descriptive method. The sampling technique employs disproportionate stratified random sampling. Samples consist of 143 students of 7th grade from three SMP Negeri in Rasau Jaya Sub-district, Kuburaya Regency, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. The data collection technique utilizes creative thinking skill test in the form of an essay with fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration aspects. Students’ concept understanding test is in the form of four-tier diagnostic test. Data analysis employs descriptive statistics with percentage of creative thinking and conceptual understanding in categories of understanding, partial understanding, misconception, and not understanding. The creative thinking skill percentage of SMPN students in Rasau Jaya, Indonesia in the originality and flexibility aspect is in a fairly creative category, whereas in the elaboration and fluency aspect the category is still less creative. The highest percentage of students’ conceptual understanding is misconception of 45.25% and followed by an understanding of 30.64%, not understand of 13.2%, and partial understanding of 10.97%. The obtained data give evidence that natural sciences (IPA) learning knowledge among junior high school students, especially concept understanding and creative thinking, is still low. Therefore, teachers could develop students’ creative thinking skills so their concept understanding could be improved.

Abstract

The secondary metabolites in plants such as Premna serratifolia (P. serratifolia) are influenced by their growing locations, which in turn affects their bioactivity. This study aimed to compare the antioxidant activity and α-glucosidase inhibition of P. serratifolia leaf extracts from the Sintang, Kapuas Hulu, and Sambas districts in West Kalimantan. Antioxidant capacity was evaluated using the DPPH method, while the reduction of α-glucosidase activity was assessed using the PNPG method. Functional groups and active compounds were identified using FTIR and UHPLC-Q-Orbitrap HRMS. The findings indicated that the extract from Kapuas Hulu, obtained through maceration (KHM), exhibited the highest antioxidant activity (IC₅₀ 18.39) and contained the most total phenolic content (TPC). The best α-glucosidase inhibition activity (IC₅₀ 4194.14) was found in the extract from Sambas obtained through Soxhlet extraction (SSI), which had the highest total flavonoid content (TFC). Principal Component Analysis (PCA) revealed that the functional groups and active compounds of P. serratifolia from Kapuas Hulu and Sintang were similar, as both regions are located in eastern West Kalimantan. Additionally, Partial Least Squares (PLS) analysis revealed that the C-H alkane, O-H, and isoferulic acid were the most influential compounds in determining antioxidant activity. At the same time, the C=O group and NP-000308 predominantly influenced α-glucosidase inhibition.

Abstract

Traditional games are a valuable resource for studying biology. Traditional games in Kapuas Hulu, such as bamboo toy guns (Dendrocalamus asper), wooden spinning tops, and necklace toys made from cassava stems (Manihot esculenta), illustrate how simple tools and plant-based materials are utilized in play activities. The purpose of this study is to identify the plants used in traditional games, the specific plant parts involved, and the potential of these games as learning tools for secondary and high school biology education. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method, including observation, interviews, and documentation. A total of 45 traditional games were examined, involving 29 different plant species. Bamboo (Dendrocalamus asper) and cassava (Manihot esculenta) were among the most frequently used plants in these games. The study found that traditional games hold high potential as biology learning resources, with a score of 99.47%.

Abstract

Generation Z students like things related to smartphones as well as practical and interesting teaching materials. This research aims to determine the validity value and students' responses to barcode herbarium teaching material products on pteridophyta material. Researchers use the R&D method with the Borg and Gall development model, including stages: 1) research and data collection; 2) planning; 3) product development; 4) initial field trials; 5) trial revision; 6) field trials; and 7) improvement of the resulting product. The tools used for data collection were validation questionnaires and student responses. The assessment results show that the media that has been developed is very valid in the media aspect (95%) and material (90.47%), and valid in the language aspect (80%). Students gave very good responses to the herbarium barcode learning media in small-scale trials (83.97%), as well as large-scale trials (84.56%), it was concluded that the media developed was effective and received very good responses from students.
