Abstract

Abstract. Many media reported Hamas' attack on Israel from various perspectives, some consider it terrorism and some call it a form of defense. The Instagram account @rahma_toons owned by an Amman-Jordan cartoonist, Ahmed Rahma, is always up to date describing the current conditions of the humanitarian conflict between Palestine and Israel through his caricature work. This research aims to reveal (1) text; (2) discursive practice; and (3) sociocultural practice contained in the humanitarian conflict against Palestine and Israel in @rahma_toons Instagram caricatures based on Norman Fairclough's perspective. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach. Primary data sources are news related to the humanitarian conflict between Palestine and Israel in @rahma_toons Instagram caricatures. While secondary data is in the form of books and journal articles that support the research. The data collection techniques used were the screen capture technique, reading technique, and note-taking technique. The data analysis technique uses the Miles and Huberman model, which consists of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing related to the study of critical discourse analysis based on Norman Fairclough's perspective. The results of this study reveal (a) the text dimension of Instagram @rahma_toons uses vocabulary structures and language styles that are by the rules to convey caricature messages; (b) the discursive practice form of Instagram @rahma_toons conveys messages that attract audience attention and interaction; and (3) the socio-cultural form of Instagram @rahma_toons presents the latest news with interesting caricature visuals. The three dimensions of discourse cannot be separated from each other. Media coverage and commentary can have an impact on the views and responses of international organizations and the foreign policies of countries and other international organizations. Keywords: Caricature, Critical Discourse Analysis, Humanitarian Conflict, Norman Fairclough

Abstract

The sexual harassment case against young Palestinian activist Ahmed Tamimi took place in 2018. The research aims to analyze how media language is used to convey information to readers through an emphasis on the actors described in the Arabic news on the harassment of a woman named Ahed Tamimi using Sara Mills' critical discourse analysis theory. This research is descriptive qualitative research, which is a type of library research. The primary data source for this research is the news at the Al Jazeera, Sputnik Arab, and Al Watan voices. This research is also supported by secondary data in the form of books, journal articles, and similar news that support the research. Critical discourse analysis of Sara Mills is used as an analysis technique for the data. Research findings show that Ahed Tamimi is positioned as an object in the news, not as the main subject in news sources. It is because the news of the sexual harassment of Ahed Tamimi was conveyed through information from other actors, namely her lawyer. This lawyer becomes the subject of the storyteller, who explains and describes the news. Thus, this news is not presented directly by the female victim, namely Ahed Tamimi. In addition, this news text provides an overview of the subject and object of the storytelling, thus influencing the way the text is presented to the reader. In addition, this news text reflects gender elements because the event is conveyed and described from the male side or perspective, either from a lawyer or Israeli military spokesperson, not from the perspective of women or Ahed Tamimi as a victim of sexual harassment Abstrak Kasus pelecehan seksual terhadap aktivis muda Palestina Ahmed Tamimi terjadi pada tahun 2018.

Abstract

Abstract

In the digital age, music knows no geographical boundaries. Songs from various countries, including Arabic, can easily reach listeners around the world. An example is the songs of Sherine Abdel Wahab, a famous Egyptian singer whose works have gone viral on social media platforms, especially among TikTok users in Indonesia. This is because the millennial generation is now inclined to things that are going viral on social media, especially TikTok. For speakers of languages other than Arabic, especially Indonesian speakers, hearing Arabic songs is still an obstacle, especially enjoying the full meaning of these songs. Therefore, communicative translation of Arabic song lyrics is important to bridge the language and cultural differences. This study aims to find out the application of communicative methods and strategies used in translating the song "Shabry Aleel" popularized by Sherine Abdel Wahab. The method used in this research is qualitative with a descriptive approach, focusing on the research of translating the song Shabry Aleel popularized by Sherine Abdel Wahab as the object of research. After translating the object of the data, academic accountability of the results of the translation is carried out by describing the methods and strategies used. The communicative method research on the translation of Shabry Aleel's song popularized by Sherine Abdel Wahab is very suitable, because in addition to paying attention to communicative principles, the resulting translation is also very easy to understand by the target readers. In addition to using the communicative method, the strategies used in this research include (taqdim and ta'khir) on the subject and predicate patterns of the target language, removing (hadzf) and replacing (tabdil) on the meaning of the translated words so that the results are easier to understand.

Abstract

Romanticism in social life has become a human instinct that is impossible to eliminate. The various expressions that humans express make life colorful. Just like the romanticism shown in the novel “Maa Laa Nabuuhu Bih” by Sandra Siraj makes the reader carried away with the story of the complexity of romanticism between the characters in it. This research aims to explain the forms of Russel Noyes' romanticism in the novel “Maa Laa Nabuuhu Bih” by Sandra Siraj. The method used was descriptive–qualitative. The primary data source was the novel “Maa Laa Nabuuhu Bih, ” by Sandra Siraj published by Daar Dawen in 2018, totaling 174 pages. Secondary data sources come from studies relevant to the discussion of this research. The data collection technique used reading and note-taking methods. The data were then analyzed by detecting, understanding, and revealing messages from several novel excerpts. The results of this study found 14 forms of Russel Noyes' romanticism: two return to nature, three melancholia, two sentimentalism, three exoticism, two primitivism, and two individualism. Based on these research results, it can be concluded that melancholy and sentimentalism often occur in social life. Melancholy is caused by longing and sentimentalism is a form of overflow of feelings to convince a partner. Similar to the stories and events described in the novel “Maa Laa Nabuuhu Bih’ by Sandra Siraj. The researcher hopes that this research will not only be useful for the academic world but also add insight into social life

Abstract

In oral societies, the tradition of story telling has never truly disappeared. In modern times, folktales can be presented in the form of short stories. As a genre of prose, short stories possess their own distinct characteristics. Moreover, they often embed historical narratives, adventure tales, and heroic stories, which are typically presented through various engaging plot structures. One example of an Arabic short story rich in folktale elements is "Lu’lu’atu ash-Shabāḥi" by Kamil Kailani. This study aims to uncover the narrative functions in the short story to illustrate the pattern of the protagonist’s journey, using Vladimir Propp’s narrative approach. This research employs a Descriptive Qualitative Method. Data collection was carried out through reading, translating, and note-taking techniques. Data analysis was conducted using Miles and Huberman’s method, which includes identifying findings and marking them according to Propp’s narrative functions. The findings are then described by linking the story’s context or plot to the theoretical framework. The results show that 16 out of the 31 narrative functions proposed by Vladimir Propp are present in the story. These 16 functions include Initial Situation (α), Absentation (β), Interdiction (γ), Violation (δ), Mediation (B), Counter-Action (C), Trickery (η), Complicity (θ), Villany (A), Departure (↑), Guidance (G), Victory (J), Solution (N), Difficult Task (M), Return (K), and Recognition (R).Keywords - Arabic Short Story, Narrative Functions, Narrative Structuralism, Vladimir Propp.

Abstract

Studies on translation techniques are still limited, even though this aspect plays a crucial role in producing accurate, acceptable, and understandable translations, especially for language learners. This study aims to describe the forms of translation techniques in the novel "The Wise Donkey," a translation of the Arabic novel "Himar Al-Hakim" by Taufiq Al-Hakim. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method, with primary data sources being the novel "Himar Al-Hakim" and its translation "The Wise Donkey," as well as secondary data from literary theory and translation. Data were collected through reading and note-taking techniques and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, encompassing reduction, presentation, verification, and conclusion. Validity was maintained through source triangulation, expert consultation, and rereading of the text. This study presents 95 data points on translation techniques used by translators of the Arabic novel "Himar Al-Hakim." Researchers identified 12 translation techniques in Taufiq Al-Hakim's novel "Keledai yang Bijak," translated by Himar Al-Hakim, including adaptation, borrowing, calque, description, conventional equivalence, and transposition. Each technique has its own characteristics in conveying the meaning of a source language text. Each meaning expressed serves to facilitate understanding of a translated work, ensuring its readability and high level of acceptability. These findings contribute to the study of Arabic-Indonesian literary translation by mapping translation strategies that maintain meaning and aesthetics, and have implications for teaching translation as a practical teaching tool. The limitations of this research open up opportunities for further study of other techniques and their impact on translation quality.

Abstract

The Sand Castle is a film that represents the experience of child trauma in the context of war through subtle visual symbols that are not expressed verbally. The study of child trauma in visual media is important because traumatic experiences at an early age often appear implicitly, thus requiring an interpretive approach to be understood more deeply. This research aims to: (1) identify visual symbols that represent child trauma, (2) analyze the relationship between signifier and signified based on Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotic framework, and (3) explain the function of the imaginative world of child characters as a medium of representation of traumatic experiences. This research uses descriptive-qualitative method with structural semiotic analysis. The research data were selected scenes featuring non-verbal expressions, symbolic objects, and visual atmosphere consistent with the representation of trauma. The selection of data was done purposively, while the analysis was carried out through three stages: identification of sign units, grouping of meanings, and interpretation of sign relationships with psychological contexts. The results show that visual symbols, such as shipwrecks, shadows, and objects belonging to other characters, contain emotional content that represents loss, fear, and hope. In addition, the imaginative world of the child characters is shown to function as a symbolic mechanism to express suffering that is difficult to articulate directly. These findings indicate that film not only presents an aesthetic narrative, but can also be a reflective medium to understand the dynamics of child trauma. Thus, this research contributes to the study of trauma psychology while expanding the perspective of visual media studies on the representation of children's suffering in the context of conflict.
