Abstract

The microalgae Chaetoceros calcitrans has potential as a natural antibacterial but is rarely applied to pathogens that cause skin infections such as Staphylococcus aureus and S. epidermidis. The purpose of this study was to determine the optimum concentration of C. calcitrans extract to inhibit the growth of S. aureus and S. epidermidis. The antibacterial activity of C. calcitrans was tested by the Kirby Bauer diffusion method. The results showed that C. calcitrans extract dissolved in DMSO with the concentrations of 5, 10, 15, and 25 mg mL-1 could produce inhibition zones on S. aureus and S. epidermidis. The average diameter of the largest inhibition zone resulted in the concentration of 25 mg mL-1, namely 10.1 ± 0.5 mm in S. aureus and 9.3 ± 0.5 mm in S. epidermidis. It can be concluded that the extract of C. calcitrans has antibacterial activity against bacteria that cause skin infections S. aureus and S. epidermidis with the optimum concentration of 25 mg mL-1.

Abstract

Skin infections caused by Candida albicans and Candida krusei pose a serious health issue. One major concern regarding these infections is the resistance to antifungal drugs, highlighting the need for natural antifungals. Chaetoceros calcitrans, a microalgae, is known to contain natural antimicrobial compounds. This study aims to evaluate the antifungal potential of C. calcitrans n-hexane extract against both pathogens. The antifungal activity was tested using the diffusion method. The results indicated that the extract at a concentration of 100 mg mL⁻¹ inhibited the growth of C. albicans and C. krusei, showing the highest inhibition zones of 10.3 ± 0.9 mm and 9 ± 1.4 mm, respectively. GC-MS analysis revealed that the C. calcitrans extract contains antifungal compounds, including 2-Butyl-1-hexyloctahydro-1H-indene, at a concentration of 30.72%. Therefore, it can be concluded that C. calcitrans extract possesses antifungal activity and has potential as a drug candidate for fungal skin infections.

Abstract

Koinfeksi adalah infeksi simultan oleh dua virus. Salah satu kasus koinfeksi yang sering terjadi adalah infeksi Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) pada orang yang telah terinfeksi Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Hal ini terjadi karena kedua virus tersebut memiliki kesamaan jalur transmisi, salah satunya melalui pembuatan tato menggunakan jarum yang terkontaminasi. Peminat tato di Indonesia semakin bertambah, begitu pula di kota Cimahi. Oleh sebab itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menentukan keberadaan kasus koinfeksi HIV-HBV pada orang bertato di Cimahi. Pengambilan spesimen berupa serum dilakukan pada 50 orang responden yang telah memenuhi kriteria yaitu mengisi informed consent, berdomisili di Cimahi, memiliki tato permanen, tidak berganti-ganti pasangan, tidak menggunakan narkoba jarum suntik, dan belum pernah melakukan transfusi darah. Keberadaan anti-HIV dan HBsAg dalam serum dideteksi menggunakan imunokromatografi dengan tingkat sensitivitas dan spesifisitas yang tinggi. Dari 50 orang responden yang terdiri dari 25 orang perempuan dan 25 orang laki-laki dengan rentang usia antara 17-48 tahun, didapatkan dua orang (4%) yang positif terinfeksi HIV dan satu orang (2%) positif terinfeksi HBV. Penelitian ini membuktikan adanya satu kasus koinfeksi HIV-HBV yang terjadi pada orang bertato di Cimahi.
