Abstract

Students face challenges in completing their thesis, often leading to decreased motivation and perseverance. One factor that can support academic success is grit, which refers to consistency of interest and perseverance toward long-term goals. This study aims to examine the integration of values from Serat Wedhatama with Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) to strengthen students' grit in completing their thesis. The method used is a literature review, analyzing cultural values in Serat Wedhatama and CBT principles. The findings indicate that teachings in Serat Wedhatama, such as self-control, perseverance, and self-awareness, align with grit components and CBT principles. This study proposes a counseling model based on CBT, integrating local values as a strategy to enhance students' grit. This research is conceptual and requires empirical testing to assess its effectiveness in improving students' grit.

Abstract

A great nation is not determined by the natural wealth and technology possessed by a nation, but because of the strong character of the nation. Based on this statement, strengthening character education needs to be implemented to support the strengthening of the character of the nation's next generation. Based on a preliminary study conducted in vocational high schools, it is found that many students have low religious character. This is necessary to remember the importance of religious character as a balance to other characters. The final goal to be realized in this study is to develop an android application innovation to strengthen the religious character of Vocational High School students that can be accepted theoretically and practically so that it can be widely used in educational settings as one of the guidance media that aims to overcome the problem of religious character in student classes. The development model used in this study was adapted from the development research model of Borg & Gall (1983). Currently the research process is in stage 3, namely the initial development of the wrong product design, namely developing a scale instrument for religious character. The scale of religious character consists of 28 statement items whose development is based on the religious dimensions of Glock and Strak (1974), namely dimensional beliefs, dimensions of religious practice, dimensions of appreciation, and dimensions of loss and experience. In this article we will build on the validity and reliability of the statement items on the religious character scale. The validity results obtained were in the form of 24 statement items that were declared valid and the instruments were declared valid for use, as evidenced by the reliability value of 0.971 or in the very high category. Based on the results of the validity and reliability, the scale of religious character can be used to measure the religious character of vocational school students Keyword: religious character, validity, reliability

Abstract

Research on career development has largely focused on adolescents and young adults, leaving early career construction in primary education relatively underexplored, particularly in religious-based schooling context. Drawing on Career Construction Theory (CCT), this study examines how teachers in Islamic elementary schools facilitate students’ early career meaning making. A qualitative design was employed involving five Islamic elementary school teachers in Central and East Java, Indonesia, selected based on their teaching experience and involvement in student development programs. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and document observations and analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis framework. Credibility was ensured through data triangulation and member checking. The findings reveal that teachers act as key agents in fostering students’ early career awareness by integrating Islamic values such as responsibility, discipline, honesty, and respect into learning actions and school programs. Experiential activities, including career visits, school orientation programs, and interest-based extracurricular activities, support students’ early exploration and emerging career adaptability. This study contributes to the development of CCT by demonstrating how early career narratives can emerge within culturally and spiritually grounded educational environments. Pratically, the findings highlight the need for developmentally appropriate and culturally responsive career guidance frameworks in primary education. Future studies should incorporate students’ and parents’ perspectives to further capture the dynamics of early career constructions.

Abstract

This study investigates whether mindfulness fosters grit among Islamic elementary school students across diverse socio-demographic contexts in Indonesia. The growing need for non-cognitive competencies, such as perseverance and self-regulation, underscores the importance of identifying psychological factors that support students’ academic persistence. Therefore, this research aims to examine the predictive role of mindfulness for grit and explore variations in both constructs by gender, residential area (rural–urban), and province. A quantitative cross-sectional design was employed involving 535 students from Islamic primary schools across 24 provinces. Data were collected using adapted versions of the Child and Adolescent Mindfulness Measure and an elementary school grit scale, both demonstrating acceptable validity and internal consistency reliability in the Indonesian context. Statistical analyses included descriptive statistics, independent samples t-tests, one-way ANOVA, and simple linear regression. Results indicate that most students demonstrate moderate levels of mindfulness and grit, with significant differences across gender, region, and province. Female and rural students score higher on mindfulness and grit. Regression analysis reveals that mindfulness significantly predicts grit (β = 0.440, p < .001), explaining 19.4% of the variance, suggesting that present moment awareness and emotional regulation contribute to students’ perseverance. These findings imply that cultivating mindfulness within Islamic educational settings may strengthen character education and enhance academic resilience. Future research should use longitudinal and experimental designs, include multi-informant data, and consider contextual factors to better understand how mindfulness supports grit development.

Abstract

Self disclosure is a critical component of students’ social and emotional development; however, many students experience difficulties in expressing their thoughts and feelings openly, which may hinder interpersonal relationships and psychological well-being. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of group counseling using assertive training techniques in enhancing students’ self-disclosure. A quantitative approach with a pre-experimental one-group pre-test–post-test design was employed. The participants consisted of five junior high school students identified as having low self-disclosure levels through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a self-disclosure scale and analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired samples t-test, effect size (Cohen’s d), Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and gain score analysis. The data showed that the post-test average for self-disclosure significantly jumped to 94.00 (SD = 2.74) compared to the pre-test average of 58.20 (SD = 1.92). According to the paired samples t-test, the difference was statistically significant (t(4) = -23.403, p <.001). The very large effect size further corroborates this finding (d = -10.466). The gain score analysis also revealed that every individual has made some progress, the mean increment being 35.80 points. At the same time, the study showed that group counseling with assertive training is a very effective way of increasing students' self-disclosure, not only in theory but in practice as well. Moreover, the study reinforces the idea of skill-based counseling as a means to enhance students' communication abilities and to promote more inclusive and responsive school settings.

Abstract

Cultural intelligence is essential for school counselors to provide effective multicultural counseling. This study examines the cultural intelligence levels of guidance and counseling teachers in East Java, Indonesia, focusing on its four dimensions: metacognitive, cognitive, motivational, and behavioral. The research aims to assess their ability to address diverse student needs in multicultural contexts. Using a survey method, data were collected from 328 school counselors through the Cultural Intelligence Scale, comprising 20 items. Descriptive analysis categorized participants' cultural intelligence levels and identified strengths and areas needing improvement. Results showed that 66.70% of participants had high cultural intelligence, 33% moderate, and 0.30% low. Most counselors excelled in motivational and behavioral dimensions, demonstrating strong adaptability and willingness to engage with cultural diversity. However, variability in the cognitive dimension suggests a need for further development in cultural understanding. This study concludes that cultural intelligence is a vital competency for inclusive and adaptive counseling services. Targeted training programs are recommended to address gaps, particularly in cognitive skills, to enhance counselors' effectiveness in multicultural settings. These findings provide valuable insights for developing strategies to strengthen cultural competencies in educational counseling practices, ensuring services meet the diverse needs of students.
