Abstract

Religion and culture are two important elements in society that influence each other. Even though both have their respective fundamental values, Islam as a religion with tradition as culture in Nusantara can acculturate and come into direct contact in harmony. The Barikan tradition showed that there is a fairly close relationship between religion and local culture. The tradition, which initially aims to pray for ancestral spirits, has since been considered an obligation by the people of Manyargading Village. Through this tradition, they believe that they will get blessings, peace, security, and get an abundant fortune. The Barikan tradition is a representation of Javanese culture that stores the values of Islamic education. They are the values of faith, worship, community, local Islamic history, morals, and da'wah.

Abstract

Feedback is crucial in the writing learning process, as it enables students to enhance the quality of their work after receiving input from their teacher. Nonetheless, lecturers do not completely grasp the essence of writing education. This study seeks to explore lecturer' beliefs about teaching writing through feedback, describe how these beliefs are applied in teaching practices, and identify any discrepancies between these beliefs and what occurs in the classroom. This research employs a qualitative methodology through a case study. Data were collected via interviews with teachers and students, along with learning observations, and were then analyzed using both qualitative and quantitative methods through descriptive statistics. The findings of the study suggest that feedback plays a vital role in teaching writing, particularly when complemented by Merdeka curriculum centered on outcome-based learning. The different types of feedback used in learning include written feedback, conferencing, and peer feedback. The roles that lecturers take on include facilitator, provider of feedback, and coordinator. The disparity that arises pertains solely to the lecturer's role in providing feedback, without taking any corrective measures. This research suggests that implementing corrective feedback can enhance students' writing skills.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of positive politeness strategies in the movie The School for Good and Evil, utilizing Brown and Levinson's politeness theory (1987). By analyzing expressive utterances, the research examines how characters convey emotions, maintain relationships, and enhance interpersonal interactions within a fantasy setting. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, with data sourced from the movie and its script. The findings reveal that the characters employ various strategies such as noticing, exaggeration, using in-group identity markers, avoiding disagreements, and offering promises to navigate themes of identity, belonging, and moral dichotomy. These strategies foster solidarity, resolve conflicts, and strengthen social bonds in the fantastical context of the story. However, the study's reliance on a single movie limits the generalizability of the findings, highlighting the need for further research across different genres and cultural contexts. This study contributes to linguistic research by showcasing how positive politeness strategies are adapted in unique narrative settings and provides insights for improving communication in real-world contexts, such as educational environments.
