Abstract

In the oil and gas industry, manufacturing processes covered a variety of fields including pipe fittings production. Generally, this process involves a press machine utilized as a shape forming using punch-dies sets as mold profiles. The common problem found with the dies is the dimension of dies is not ergonomics to be handled manually by operators. Additionally, the support of dies tends to experience buckling upon receiving a pressure load of 15 MPa. Hence, alternative and practical designs are required, which have low deflection values and high fatigue resistance rates. Additionally, the designs are expected to be safe and economical. In this study, two alternative designs of punch-dies support are proposed. Subsequently, the FEA simulation was carried out for pipe fittings of 8 inches with ASME B16.9 standard size for WF Beam A36 Steel to compare the two proposed designs. The results show that alternative design 2 has a lower deflection value of 0.181 mm, a higher Factor of Safety of 3.21, and a higher cycle time of 358569 cycles than alternative design 1. Nevertheless, alternative design 2 has a higher production cost of 220 USD compared to alternative design 2. Therefore, this study shows that alternative design 2 has better performance while alternative design 1 is more economical.

Abstract

The hydroponic pilot project in the Batam State Polytechnic area was motivated by problems with economic conditions and declining health conditions during the Covid-19 pandemic. This project is expected to support the “growing your own food movement” in an effort to reduce unemployment, increase food security and a healthy lifestyle. The hydroponic method was chosen because it is very easy to do and does not require a large area of land. In this community service activity, a hydroponic plant building framework will be made as a prototype of an efficient and efficient hydroponic building so that it can be used by the wider community. This activity is also useful for applying design knowledge as one of the PbL activities carried out by CAD, CNC, CAM, and Fabrication Engineering courses in the Mechanical Engineering Department, so that it can become an arena for higher education participation to support people's lives. The method of implementing this community service activity is to make observations to find a suitable area to build a hydroponic plant house, then the results of the observations are poured in the form of a design by utilizing software so that the materials needed and the shape of the framework that is built can be known. The last activity is making a hydroponic plant place. This activity is planned to be carried out from April to November 2021. Based on the results of the evaluation of the service program questionnaire for product distribution, it is known that the majority of respondents are satisfied with the products produced.

Abstract

This paper presents an experimental study on the impact of coolant viscosity on the surface roughness of Inconel 600 material processed using a lathe. This research employs sequential experimental methods, encompassing a coolant viscosity test, specimen machining with a lathe, and surface roughness test. The standard for the roughness grade number is defined by ISO 1302. The study effectively demonstrates the use of a refractometer as a reliable and practical alternative for determining coolant quality in % Brix units, which strongly correlates with coolant viscosity. The research findings reveal that an increase in coolant viscosity results in a smoother surface roughness of the workpiece, while a decrease leads to an increase in surface roughness. Specifically, the average viscosity of 8%, 10%, and 13% Brix coolant results in an average surface roughness of Ra 11.83 μm, Ra 10.09 μm, and Ra 7.23 μm, respectively. The average roughness grade number based on this study is N9 - N10. However, the study also identifies the need for further mathematical calculations to establish a link between coolant concentration, % Brix, and coolant viscosity. This opens up an intriguing avenue for future research and holds the potential to significantly enhance our understanding of the relationship between these variables.

Abstract

Failure due to material fatigue can be potentially fatal as it may lead to fractures without any initial detectable deformation. Factors such as high maximum load and large stress cycles accelerate the material fatigue process. In the design of a lower limb exoskeleton robot, the strength and safety of the robot are primary focuses, particularly in the Link Joint mechanism. The comfort and safety of the structure are determined by the geometry and type of material used. Analysis using Fracture Mechanics is employed to evaluate cracks in the Link Joint mechanical structure, with the calculation of the Stress Intensity Factor (SIF) value as an indicator of the stress intensity on the crack due to load. This research aims to identify critical stress and estimate the service life of the mechanism through testing using Finite Element Method-based software, specifically Solidworks 2020.

Abstract

3D printer technology offers the capability to print 3D objects with nearly perfect accuracy, making it a crucial tool in the industry for rapid prototyping. This study employs an experimental approach to design a Cartesian 3D Printer with a printing area of X-axis 150 mm, Y-axis 150 mm, and Z-axis 200 mm, and subsequently compares the printing accuracy with the Anycubic Mega Zero 3D printer, which has a printing area of X-axis 220 mm, Y-axis 220 mm, and Z-axis 250 mm. Both machines underwent testing by printing block specimens 10 times each. The printing results revealed several specimens that did not meet the specified tolerance limits. In the Cartesian 3D Printer, three dimensional measurements exceeded tolerance levels in specimens 7 and 8, specifically in length, width, and height dimensions. Meanwhile, in the Anycubic Mega Zero 3D Printer, five measurements exceeded tolerance limits in specimens 6, 8, and 9, with one width dimension and two length and height dimensions. From these findings, it can be concluded that the Cartesian 3D Printer demonstrates higher accuracy compared to the Anycubic Mega Zero 3D Printer.
