Abstract

The research aimed to investigate the tourism villages provided by indigenous people in Indonesia to create a sense of place for visitors. Indigenous communities in Indonesia were often faced with discrimination and negative stigma. However, by utilizing the potential of their cultural heritage and local resources, they created a sense of place in their tourist village. The primary objective was to understand the role of indigenous entrepreneurs in preserving tourism villages and identifying the challenges faced. The research applied a qualitative approach with a case study method and was conducted in several locations, including Pampang-Kalimantan, Sade-Lombok, and Kampung Ulos-Sumatera, representing various instances of indigenous entrepreneurs managing tourism villages. The analysis focused on the characteristics of indigenous entrepreneurship and the challenges faced. Furthermore, the data were obtained through interviews and documentation with community leaders, business actors, and key figures providing assistance to indigenous entrepreneurs. The results show that indigenous entrepreneurs play a crucial role in preserving a sense of place in the respective tourism villages. These characteristics influence the physical, social, and shared meanings constituting a sense of place. However, the entrepreneurs face various challenges in the preservation efforts, including issues related to costs, management of traditional spaces for homestays and guest houses, financial support and administration, limited management and tourism-supporting facilities, enhancing storytelling, and sustainable tourism packaging for area marketing.

Abstract

Public obedience to the implementation of the health protocols during the COVID-19 pandemic was important. In reality, not all people, especially in residential areas (neighborhoods), were obedient. Limited research had addressed the implementation of health protocols in the settings of the neighborhood so a thorough study on this issue was significant to explore new knowledge. This study aimed to identify the authorities in charge of handling the COVID-19 pandemic in the neighborhoods, the obstacles experienced by the authorities and the residents, the support of the neighborhood authorities, the residents’ responses to policies related to the pandemic, and the impacts of the pandemic on the residents’ lives. There were 30 participants from 30 neighborhoods interviewed and observed. To increase the credibility of the study, a triangulation method was employed. It revealed that there were formal and informal authorities. Both the authorities and the residents experienced obstacles. The authorities had conducted many efforts to handle the pandemic like delivering education, providing facilities, modifying the residents’ behaviors, and collaborating with related stakeholders. Residents were supporting and not supporting the policies and the authorities’ efforts. Besides the negative impacts on the economy, health, society, and psychology, it turned out the pandemic has also brought positive impacts such as the adaptation to new habits and the emergence of new micro-businesses in the neighborhoods.

Abstract

Maluku is one of Indonesia's regencies, famous for having a harmonious inter-religious life, one of which is because of the panas pela tradition that binds its people to live side by side like brothers and sisters, regardless of differences in belief. However, in 1999 a conflict arose in Maluku and created tension between Christian and Muslim residents. The impact is still clearly visible today in the segregation of residential areas based on religion. Apart from that, a small portion of the Christian people still choose to live in the middle of Muslim settlements. The same thing also applies to a small portion of the Muslim people who still live in Christian residential areas. The purpose of this study was to determine the form of placemaking of Christians and Muslims to create a comfortable and safe place to live even though they are in the middle of a religious group that has been involved in conflict with them. This study was conducted through a qualitative design using interview and map elicitation methods involving 10 respondents. The results revealed three main forms of placemaking for Ambon city residents, namely building positive interactions with neighbors of different religions (relational), reflecting on narratives and memories of the past (historical), and entrusting security and safety to God (spiritual). The findings offer valuable insights for local communities and authorities in developing strategies to promote inclusive, interfaith coexistence in areas affected by past conflict.

Abstract

Cross-sector interorganizational exchanges are essential to meeting the needs of all parties involved. However, existing scales to evaluate such exchanges are scarce and are predominantly developed in Western contexts, which differ from Asia’s collectivist nature. This study developed a scale to assess interorganizational exchange relationships. Study 1 employed Straussian grounded theory with participants representing state-owned enterprises and community groups, using interviews and focus group discussions. Data were analysed using the Corbin and Strauss method, and the findings informed the item development for Study 2. Validity evidence based on the test construct was examined using the Content Validity Ratio (CVR) with 20 participants, and item discrimination indices were calculated. Subsequently, data from 178 respondents were analysed through confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The CFA results indicated that a unidimensional 27-item model provided the best fit, differing from the five dimensions identified in the qualitative study. Nonetheless, no relationship-related items were removed, highlighting the central role of relationships in interorganizational exchange within a collectivist society such as Indonesia.
