Abstract

Tujuan pelatihan dan pendampingan adalah untuk meningkatkan kemampuan pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris siswa netra berbasis Audiolingual di yayasan Yaketunis agar memiliki kesempatan belajar sehingga diharapkan bahwa para siswa ini memiliki kemampuan berbahasa Inggris yang sama baiknya dengan anak normal lainnya. Pengabdian ini dilaksanakan di Yaketunis, sebuah yayasan yang didedikasikan untuk anak penyandang tuna netra. Pengabdian ini menggunakan metode pelatihan dan pendampingan. Pelatihan dilakukan dengan pengajaran klasikal yang berfokus pada pembentukan kalimat sederhana dan pengucapan yang tepat. Pelatihan dilaksanakan dengan metode audiolingual dan menggunakan variasi drills seperti Repetition, Replacement, Completion, Transportation, dan Expansion. Pendampingan dilakukan dengan teknik menghafal dialog (Dialogue Memorization Technique) dan dipraktekan dengan menggunakan teknik pengembangan dialog (Backward Bulld-up /Expansion Drill). Selanjutnya, pengajaran klasikal dengan menggunakan metode audiolingual ini dilengkapi dengan media pembelajaran yaitu British Council Podcast. Hasil kegiatan ini yaitu peningkatan kemampuan bahasa Inggris siswa netra dalam pembentukan kalimat sederhana  dan pengucapan yang benar dengan menggunakan metode pembelajaran audiolingual.

Abstract

This research aims to identify the students’ perception of the use of Google Classroom Application in learning reading. It based on the research problem that the students still adapting to the recent online learning in this pandemic situation. Students also have not fully participated in online learning, especially in reading class. The research used a qualitative method. The population in this research was the students of Universitas PGRI Yogyakarta, and the sample was the third-semester students of the English Language Education Study Program. The number of samples was 10 students. The samples were taken by using a random sampling technique. The data were collected through interviews and analyzed by using descriptive analysis through transcribing the data, member checking, and coding the data. The result showed that students’ perceptions of the use of Google Classroom Application in learning reading during online classes in this pandemic situation were positive. They stated that online learning by using Google Classroom Application in reading class was efficient and enjoyable. They enjoyed the learning activity although they cannot interact directly with the lecturer and their classmates. Minor issues such as internet connectivity, student idleness, and a lack of direct interaction with the professor were encountered by students during the online learning process, but these issues had no impact on their ability to learn to read. It may be deduced from their comment that, despite having various issues with internet connectivity and learning motivation, they are able to enjoy the learning process and participate effectively in it.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to increase English vocabulary using visual mnemonic techniques for seventh graders of junior high school. Several factors inhibited students from having difficulty memorizing vocabulary, lose motivation to memorize vocabulary and easily forgetting the vocabulary they had learned. This inhibiting factor could be overcome by using visual mnemonic techniques to increase students' vocabulary. This study used Classroom Action Research with a sample of 32 students. The research was conducted at SMP N 2 Kasihan, Bantul. Data was collected by observation, interview, pre-test and post-test with instrument  field notes, documentation and tests at the end of each study in the entire cycle. Analysis of research data used quantitative and qualitative descriptive data analysis. The results of the study proved that the increase in the percentage of student scores continues to increase. This can be seen in the acquisition of pre-cycle values to the last cycle. The value obtained from the pre-cycle was only 15.93% then increased in the first cycle to 37.38% then in the second cycle there was an increase again. There was a very good increase to 95.75%, with the average student score in the second cycle was 85.31. The increase in student scores in the second cycle, the targeted presentation was 80% and the student KKM was 75. This level of achievement has proven that visual mnemonic technique helped students of SMP N 2 Kasihan, Bantul in increasing students' vocabulary remarkably.

Abstract

The research aims to improve the level thinking qualities toward students in Reading III using students‘ responses text. The research applied descriptive qualitative method. It described about the students‘ responses text that produced by students in reading novel to improve students‘ higher order based on their own perspective. The participants of this research were nine students of the semester III, A3 class, English Education Program of PGRI University of Yogyakarta. Data were got through observation, interview, document analysis and questionaire. Qualitative data were anayzed through coding data, explanation, or data presenting and conclusion. The findings showed that using students‘ responses text in Reading III learning process that focus on novel significantly improve the students‘higher order thinking level. The first activities, students‘order thinking level still in the lower category i.e., remember and understand. The precentage is only 25%. The second activities, students‘order thinking level imrpoved up to 45%. The improvement of students‘order thinking in reading comprehension using students‘ responses also influenced students‘ motivation and feeling when they were learning. The response text helped students in improving their reading skill.

Abstract

The aim of the study was to identify the effectiveness of using the combination of POWER and KWL to teach writing of fourth semester students at English Language Education Study Program in the University of PGRI Yogyakarta. It is based on the research problem that the students got difficulties on writing because they used ineffective strategy. The research used experimental research design. This research was conducted in 3 stages: data collection, action and data analysis. The data were collected through test, observation, and questionnaire. The data were analyzed using the steps of: normality test, homogeneity test, inferential analysis, determining hypothesis testing, and conclusion.The hypothesis is determined into the Null hypothesis (H0) and Alternative Hypothesis (Ha). H0 is accepted if the significance value >0.05 and Ha is rejected. The result of this research presented that the combination of POWER and KWL strategy was effective to teach writing at the university level. The control group’s mean score on the pre-test was 56,22 increased to 57,88 in post-test with gained point 1,59. The experiment group’s mean score on pre-test was 57,33 increased to 60,89 on post-test with gained point 3,66.

Abstract

The research aims to describe the visually impaired students’ learningEnglish using Total Physical Response (TPR). The research may contribute to thedevelopment of English learning model for the visually impaired students whoneed attention in their right to get better education and improvement in learningEnglish using Total Physical Response (TPR). The research method wasdescriptive qualitative method. The study was conducted at YaketunisYogyakarta. There were fifteen visually impaired students who becameparticipants in this research. The sources of the data were (1) visually impairedstudents as the participants of the study, (2) recorded actions (video-taped), (3)recorded interviews (audio-taped), and (4) field note.The result showed that visually impaired students had new experience inlearning English effectively, actively, stress-free and joyful. Total PhysicalResponses handled that students’ limitation in visualization to get informationthrough voice by their senses of hearing. The students practiced giving responsesof some instructions, pronunced some words and repeated the words many timesby maximizing their sense of hearing to activate their psychomotor competence.This process of learning activities supported them in developing their skill inmastering vocabulary, expression, and language command.

Abstract

In speaking English, students have problems with limited vocabulary, pronunciation accuracy, self-confidence, and others. The teacher's strategy has a lot of influence on improving students' speaking. During this pandemic situation, teacher must apply the appropriate strategy in teaching speaking, since the classroom situation is different. The research aimed to identify the teachers' obstacles in teaching speaking and to find out the teachers' strategies in teaching speaking during pandemic at SMAN 1 Jongkong. The design of this research is the qualitative research which case study. The subjects of this research were two English teachers who teach English in tenth and eleventh grades of SMAN 1 Jongkong. The data of this research were collected by observation, interview, and documentation. The data were analyzed by: data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion. Then, to point out the trustworthiness of the data, this research used triangulation method. Method triangulation was used in this research to compare the outcomes of interviews and the findings of observations. It means that in checking the data validation, researcher has to compare some method of collecting data that have been used (observation, interview, and documentation) in order that the data collection was in the same place or portion. The result of this research shows that the students found obstacles in learning speaking during pandemic situation, such as problem with internet connection because they were located in remote area which had poor connection and students were mostly passive during the online learning process because they felt ashamed and scared to answer teacher’s question, since they still had to adapt the current learning situation. Therefore, the English teachers applied various strategies to achieve the goals in teaching speaking. The strategies were storytelling, conversation practice, discussion, and translation.

Abstract

Melalui kegiatan pengabdian ini, tim pengabdi memberikan pelatihan pengembangan media pembelajaran untuk pembelajaran Bahasa asing berbasis IT kepada pengurus, dan pembimbing. Media pembelajaran dikembangkan menggunakan Microsoft Power Point yang diintegrasikan dengan aplikasi Sound of Text. Remaja Masjid Bilal Bin Robbah beranggotakan remaja–remaja muslim yang tinggal dekat masjid. Sebagaimana remaja pada umumnya, handphone dan Laptop merupakan dua alat komunikasi hasil perkembangan teknologi yang sangat disenangi oleh remaja masjid Bilal Bin Robbah. Orangtua dan para pembimbing remaja masjid khawatir para remaja masjid ini terpengaruh oleh dampak negative penggunaan Handphone dan laptop tersebut. Kemampuan menggunakan Bahasa Inggris dan Bahasa Arab juga menjadi kekhawatiran orang tua dan pembimbing karena para remaja tersebut mengaku kesulitan dalam mempelajarinya padahal dua bahasa tersebut sangat penting saat ini. Media pembelajaran yang dihasilkan dalam pelatihan dan pendampingan diimplementasikan pada pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris dan Bahasa Arab kepada anak–anak binaan remaja masjid. Kegiatan pengabdian ini memberikan manfaat bagi para pendamping dan remaja masjid sebagai kegiatan pengembangan bahasa asing dengan memanfaatkan informasi teknologi sebagai media belajar. Hasil dari penelitian, para remaja masjid merasa senang karena dapat mengulang kembali media pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris dan Bahasa Arab dimanapun dan kapanpun. Suara, cara membaca atau pengucapan kedua bahasa tersebut dalam Power Point mempermudah mereka dalam belajar. Through this service activity, the service team provides training in developing learning media for IT-based foreign language learning to administrators and mentors of youth mosque. Learning media was developed using Microsoft PowerPoint which is integrated with the Sound of Text application. The youth of the Bilal Bin Robbah Mosque consist of Muslim youths who live near the mosque. Like teenagers in general, cellphones and laptops are two communication tools resulting from technological development that are mostly liked. Parents and mentors for mosque youth are worried the negative impact of using those tools. The ability to use English and Arabic is also concern for parents and supervisor as those two languages ​​are very important at this time. These teenagers admit that they have difficulty in learning them. The learning media produced are implemented in learning English and Arabic for children. The service activity provides benefits for mosque assistants and youth as foreign language development activities by utilizing IT as a learning medium. For the result, the youth of the mosque feel happy because they can repeat learning English and Arabic in any occasion. Voice, how to read or pronounce the two languages ​​in Power Point make it easier for them to learn.

Abstract

This research endeavors to confront the impediments in teaching English speaking skills to junior high school students in Indonesia. It acknowledges the prevalent skepticism and monotony linked with conventional language learning approaches. To address this, the study introduces the Spinning Wheel, an inventive assessment tool designed to invigorate student engagement in English speaking. Employing a Research and Development (R&D) strategy and the ADDIE model by Dick and Carey, the study focuses on 8th-grade students at SMPN 2 Sentolo. Validation from teachers, material experts, and media experts serves as the research instrument. The Spinning Wheel is systematically developed and integrated into the classroom to create a more enjoyable and effective learning experience. Evaluation indicates positive outcomes, demonstrating heightened student interest and confidence in speaking English. The findings suggest that incorporating innovative assessment media, like the Spinning Wheel, positively influences language learning. The research starts with an in-depth Analysis, identifying the specific needs of eighth-grade students in speaking skills. The subsequent Design phase shapes the Spinning Wheel Assessment Media, aligning it with curriculum goals. Development ensures pedagogical soundness, and Implementation brings the tool to life for 32 students in an engaging environment. The Evaluation phase gauges the media's efficacy, with teacher, material expert, and media expert assessments categorizing it as "very good" and "good." Abstract

The research goals are to find out some problems of students leaning English and to describe students' reading interest in learning English using online comic applications (webtoon) at Junior High School. This research is a qualitative research.The subjects were seventh grade of Junior High School students. Data collection were interview, observation and documentation. Data analysis consists of data reduction, display and conclusion. Data validity used triangulation of method. The results showed that students have some problems in learning English for reading skill such as they had difficulty reading English and understanding the text given. They are lack in grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary mastery. Moreover, the students participation was very low. Webtoon cartoons increased pupils' interest and inspired them to read English. It was discovered that kids became increasingly motivated to study English. They like taking part in class activities. Furthermore, Webtoon Comics assists students in reading because it contains vivid visuals, wonderful storylines, and is digital. It is appropriate, fun and interesting. The pictures provided teaching as well as aroused of curiosity, which can assist pupils in reading more quickly.
