Abstract

This research investigates impolite utterances by haters of Lady Gaga on her instagram comments through pragmatic study. The object is to find out the types and functions of impoliteness strategies. This research was conducted by descriptive qualitative design. The data were words, phrases and clauses. The sources of data were comments of Lady Gaga haters in a photo which posted on January 10th 2019 on her instagram account. The findings of the study show that: (1) There are four types of impoliteness strategies found on comments of Lady Gaga’s instagram namely positive impoliteness, bald on record impoliteness, negative impoliteness, and sarcasm. Positive and negative impoliteness are the high percentage strategies while sarcasm is the lowest frequency strategy to occur in this research. (2) There are three functions of impoliteness strategies are used by haters of Lady Gaga on her instagram comments. They are entertaining impoliteness, affective impoliteness, and coercive impoliteness.

Abstract

Sasaran pengabdian kepada masyarakat adalah komunitas pengrajin anyaman pandan “Galeri Menday dan Oleh-Oleh”. Permasalahan: kurangnya pengetahuan dan keterampilan pengrajin dalam hal kreativitas dan kuantitas pengembangan desain produk, keterbatasan peralatan untuk mendukung proses kerja, tidak ditemukannya varietas produk berbasis budaya lokal. Tujuan pengabdian adalah untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan pengrajin anyaman pandan dalam mengembangkan desain produk, menambah peralatan untuk mendukung proses kerja, dan melestarikan budaya lokal. Metode yang digunakan untuk menambah pengetahuan adalah penyuluhan dengan materi ekonomi kreatif, pelestarian budaya lokal, dan desain pengembangan produk. Peningkatan keterampilan melalui metode pelatihan inovasi desain produk berbasis budaya lokal Melayu Deli. Pengukuran peningkatan pengetahuan melalui pre-test dan post-test. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan rata-rata persentase peningkatan pengetahuan pengrajin berada pada kategori baik. Rata-rata persentase target peningkatan keterampilan berada pada kategori baik. Dampak dari kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini membuat usaha anyaman pandan “Menday Gallery and Souvenir” memiliki desain produk baru yang berbasis ornamen Melayu Deli. Artinya, unit usaha anyaman pandan ikut melestarikan budaya lokal. Selain keragaman, kualitas produk, kesejahteraan perajin pun meningkat

Abstract

The Javanese language (BJ) is divided into three, namely Ngoko, Krama Madya, and Krama Inggil. BJ consists of 10 vowel sounds: [i, I, e, ɛ, a, ǝ, o, ɔ, U, u]. This study aims to determine the values of BJ vowel sounds based on FORMAN data analysis, comparing the voices of male speakers (PL) and female speakers (PP). Additionally, the study aims to identify the more dominant vowel sounds based on gender. The qualitative method was used to collect data on the vowel sounds of Ngoko Javanese (BJN) by analyzing voice recordings using the Praat application program. The quantitative method was employed to calculate the FORMAN F1, F2, and F3 values and determine the average difference in BJN vowel sounds. Data from the BJ dictionary, consisting of 10 words with vowel sounds at the beginning, were used for analysis. The results showed that in PL, the highest vowel values were: [u] at 3089Hz, [i] at 3918Hz, [ɔ] at 3535Hz, and [ɛ] at 3228Hz. The lowest vowel values were: [ɛ] at 277Hz, [U] at 431Hz, and [i] at 336Hz. In PP, the highest vowel values were: [ɛ] at 3021Hz, [i] at 3200Hz, [I] at 3083Hz, and [o] at 3367Hz. The lowest vowel values were: [e] at 391Hz, [I] at 525Hz, [ɛ] at 385Hz, and [i] at 455Hz. In conclusion, BJN consists of 10 vowel sounds, with the highest vowel sound being [ɔ] and the lowest vowel sound being [i] in PL. The comparison of vowel sounds at the beginning of words in PL and PP in BJN, based on the high and low sounds of the F1, F2, and F3 vowel sounds, indicates that PL is more dominant.

Abstract

The target of community service is Unit Usaha Kecil "Keripik Kue Bawang Susi" located in Makmur Village, Binjai District. Problems: 1. Lack of knowledge and skills of human resources in creatively developing product varieties, 2. Simple and unattractive packaging design, 3. Lack of equipment to support work processes, 4. Limited knowledge in utilizing social media, 5. Partners not knowing how to contact relevant agencies for guidance and development. Service Objectives: increase the knowledge and skills of partner human resources in creatively developing varieties of processed durian seed waste products, developing packaging designs, equipping work process support equipment, increasing knowledge in using social media for product promotion, building net-working with several agencies/corporates to obtain coaching and development. The methods used to increase knowledge are outreach with creative economy materials, local culinary preservation and product development design. Increasing skills through training/mentoring methods for partner human resources regarding creativity in developing product varieties, optimizing the use of digital platforms for promotional media. Measuring increased knowledge through pre-test and post-test. The results of the activity show the average percentage increase in Business Unit knowledge in the good category, the average percentage of skill increase targets in the good category. The impact of the service activities is to make the Unit Usaha Kecil "Keripik Kue Bawang Susi"   have a variety of products using processed durian seed waste based on local culinary delights.

Abstract

This study investigates the role of writing prompts to create appropriate introduction section in research article. The study analyzes three texts generated from ChatGPT by using three distinct prompts formulated based on the writing prompt model proposed by Kroll Reid, and Chapman. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the resulting texts were analyzed at the macro level to determine the realization of rhetorical moves. The findings indicate that prompt design significantly affects the quality and rhetorical completeness of the Introductions. Prompt 3, which contained more explicit instructions regarding gap identification and research significance, produced a text most closely aligned with all three moves of the CARS model. In contrast, the more general prompts led to partial or less structured realizations of the rhetorical elements. These results suggest that structured and genre-sensitive prompts can effectively guide writers when they seek Artificial Intelligence (like ChatGPT) assistance in writing research article. This study also highlights the pedagogical potential of prompt-based writing as a strategy to support academic writing instruction in higher education especially with the combination of newest technology.

Abstract

In March 2023, Indonesia was confronted with a situation that was also a worldwide concern. The hosting of the U20 World Cup in Indonesia has been cancelled. This study, however, will not address the reasons why this could happen but rather the attitudes of the world's newspapers in reporting on the subject. It is significant because, as a nation which constantly seeking global recognition, Indonesia should be introspective by understanding the global community's perspectives on the problems that exist in Indonesia, which can be illustrated by news about Indonesia that exists in foreign newspapers. Furthermore, attitude analysis can be done using Appraisal Theory. This study sampled three articles from online news: BBC, CNA, and The Straits Times. The data were analyzed by adopting a mix-method. The results obtained that the three news articles had negative attitudes perspective. Furthermore, the findings of this study's analysis can be used as teaching material for language and communication students interested in becoming journalists or writing articles for print and online publications.

Abstract

This thesis entitled Dysphemism Used in Deadpool Movie. Dysphemism in Deadpool is problematized in its home country, i.e. the United States, due to its excessive occurrences. For this reason, this study aims at 1) to find out the types of dysphemism which illuminate the uses of dysphemism, and 2) revealing the functions which explain why the characters utilize such dysphemistic words. The theory of Dysphemism proposed by Allan & Burridge (2006) is used to reveal the functions of the use of dysphemism. In addition, the author also uses a semantic approach by delineating the meaning of dysphemism in a lexical and contextual manner along with examples of its use in context. Moreover, the analysis of componential meaning is used to observe the types of dysphemism based on Allan & Burridge's theory and Rawson's theory. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The data of this research are words and phrases which indicated dysphemism. The sources of the data are transcript and video. There are 95 dysphemism data obtained and observed by the writer. The result of this research shows that three types of dysphemism are found in the movie, i.e. profanity, obscenity, and insult. The dysphemism type mostly found is the obscenity with 31 data (33%). In addition, there are seven functions of the use of dysphemism revealed: to humiliate something or someone else, to express anger, to emphasize thing or condition, to state and represent a very bad thing or condition, to express astonishment or amazement, to show intimacy and to express excitement. The most dominant function of dysphemism that is used in this movie is to humiliate something or someone else with 79 data (83%).

Abstract

The "Integrated Programming English" program aims to improve multimodal literacy, includingprogramming-based English language skills, among students and teachers at MTs SKB 3 Minister Sinar Serdang. Thisprogram involves practical training using lecture methods, demonstrations, simulations and interactive exercises.Through a project-based approach with the Scratch platform, participants are trained to combine language andtechnology skills to solve problems and express themselves creatively. The results of the training showed an increasein participants' motivation to learn English, independence, and language and programming skills. Participants becomemore critical and independent in using technology, increase creativity, and strengthen their ability to work in teams.The positive response to this modern learning method also shows that the integration of technology in languagelearning is not only accepted but also recognized as a relevant and interesting innovation for students. This programopens up opportunities for further adoption in other educational environments to support student competence in facingthe digital challenges of the 21st century

Abstract

This research aims to improve digital marketing capabilities for the IR & IR - Melayu Craft Joint Business Group (KUB) in Bandar Khalipah Village, Deli Serdang Regency, through training in the use of podcast media. This community service program is designed to overcome these obstacles by utilizing podcast technology as a marketing tool. The research method involves several stages: submission of proposals, preparation of training materials,implementation, and monitoring and evaluation. The training lasted for six months, with lecture sessions, questionsand answers, and practice regarding podcast creation and promotion. Participants are trained to create interestingpodcast content, manage and promote it effectively. The research results show significant improvements in severalaspects. Sales of songket products increased by 30% after implementing podcasts in marketing strategies, indicatingthe effectiveness of this method in expanding market reach and increasing consumer awareness. Additionally, therewas a 40% increase in KUB members' digital marketing skills, reflected in better podcast quality. Members' ability to use data analysis tools also increases, enabling them to understand market dynamics in real-time and make more strategic marketing decisions
