Abstract

This research aims to explore, analyze, and explain the Haloban language's linguistic phenomena, including morphological typology and argument structure. This research also seeks to enrich the linguistic treasures of the archipelago. This study applies the theory of diathesis proposed by Lyon. It adopts a qualitative descriptive method where comparative and inductive treatment is carried out on the data collected through a phenomenological approach. The data used in this study is oral data collected from 73 informants who live in Haloban and Asantola Village. This study shows that the Haloban language has a marking active-passive diathesis, one of the essential characteristics in the typology of accusative language. In addition to having an active-passive diathesis, the Haloban language also has a medial diathesis. From the perspective of linguistic typology, the Haloban language's active and passive diathesis shows a significant difference when compared to a diathesis in accusative language. Haloban has two types of passives: passive ni- and passive pronouns. Based on the marking system, the morphologically marked passive construction ni- has an active form, which is also morphologically marked. In passive construction, verbs that indicate passive diathesis are marked by the prefix ni-, while verbs that indicate active diathesis are marked by the prefix {ma-}. Syntactically, the active diathesis subject in the diathesis functions as an adjunct in the form of a prepositional phrase and can be removed. In the construction of passive pronouns, verbs that indicate passive diathesis appear as a base verb, while verbs that indicate active diathesis are marked by the prefix {ma-}. Agents in passive pronoun clauses cannot be omitted. This shows that active diathesis is more marked in passive pronouns than passive diathesis.

Abstract

Examining disaster reports in Indonesia is critical, as it provides essential insights into people perceptions and reactions to the frequent natural disasters. Disaster reports were examined through its communicative element including attitude to see the viewpoints of the newspaper towards disaster reports. The objectives of this research are to categorize attitudes, explain how attitudes are realized, and explain why attitudes are realized in disaster reporting in Indonesian newspaper, especially The Jakarta Post (TJP). Using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) as the analytical framework, a qualitative method was employed. The data is analyzed using Martin and White's theory of appraisal (2005). A corpus of 14 TJP newspaper articles on Indonesian natural disasters published in 2021 is broken down into clauses denoting attitude. The results of the study indicate: 1) there are three different attitude types, with appreciation being the most prevalent and having a predominately negative polarity, 2) the attitude realization reveals that TJP is the most dominant appraiser, followed by the authorities, and 3) the realization is attributed to two themes namely self-claimed recognition and neglect of self-failure, and one tone multiple perspectives which means negative attitudes dominantly voiced by different appraisers. The themes reveal the newspaper's concealed ideology points to a narrative of critique and disillusionment, which may shape the readers' understanding of the disasters and the associated societal responses.

Abstract

English learners may be influenced by culture when giving and responding to compliments. This is because they learn language through culture. In this study, tribes have different compliment response strategies. That is why cross-cultural variations cannot be ignored in terms of pragmatics. The aim of this research is to analyze the similarities and differences of compliment strategies and compliment response strategies to see the effect of culture on NJ and NNJ when giving and responding to compliments. This research is a contrastive analysis and uses qualitative methods. The data used are the answers of the participants contained in the questionnaire. The participants are 10 speakers, 5 native Javanese (NJ) and 5 non-native Javanese speakers learning English (NNJ) from 1st, 2nd, and 3rd students of English Postgraduate Program using questionnaires and interviews as research instruments. The findings of this research show that NJ and NNJ are "partly correspondence" in terms of compliment strategies and compliment responses strategies. The results of the research on compliments and responses show that NJ and NNJ use some of the same strategies but differ in the frequency of their use. Then, the research results on compliment responses show that acceptance with amendment: comment and non-acceptance: avoidance are the most frequently used by NJ, while acceptance: appreciation token is the most frequently used by NNJ. The results shows that NJ tended to adopt Javanese culture, which is characterized by "andhop ashor" or humility, while NNJ adopted Western culture, which is more expressive and direct.

Abstract

The politeness, dignity, serenity, and tranquillity should be reflected by the investigator without violence during the interrogation process. This study aims to identify the Forensic Conversational Implicature (FCI) found in a police interrogation of a murder case. A qualitative method with a philosophical approach was used, and Forensic Discourse Analysis was used as an analytical framework. A documentation study method was used to collect the data in the form of an interrogation video obtained from the Explore with Us YouTube channel. Utterances that are indicated as implicature are the data taken from the interrogation video, particularly in murder cases that happened in the U.S. In analyzing the data, deductive content analysis was applied. The results show that two types of FCI are found in this study, with particularized conversational implicature as the most dominant since it requires certain background knowledge and context to understand the investigator’s utterances. Meanwhile, generalized took second place as it does not require specific context knowledge to determine the additional conveyed meaning of several investigators’ utterances. Moreover, the reasons behind the realization of CI are under two themes, namely, gaining trust and humanity.

Abstract

Gender stereotypes that are developed in the society influence people’s thoughts and behavior. Schools contribute the socialization of gender through textbooks or interaction between teachers and students. Textbooks are extremely important in forming students' values, ideologies, and social norms. They are also acknowledged for having a major impact on how students' gender roles develop, especially in elementary school. Language use and social lives of pupils may be impacted by gender representation. The textbook material they study accounts for half of the influence. Children have access to a wealth of knowledge regarding behavior, characteristics, and social roles that are proper for each gender that are portrayed in textbooks. This research was aimed to see how gender represented according to the three social context parameters such as family, occupation, and leisure activities were used to perform Examining the gender portrayals of male and female characters in the Super Minds 6 English textbook. In conjunction with CDA, Giaschi's Visual Grammar theory is also used as an analytical tool to explain the depiction of gender representation in the textbook. Based on the findings, there are more male pictures than female pictures.
