Kata kunci: Pola arus dan sebaran klorofil-aABSTRACTCurrent patterns and distribution of chlorophyll-a are one of the most important parameters in waters to understand the dynamics of marine ecosystems and support various activities related to the utilization of marine resources. The purpose of this study was to determine the concentration of chlorophyll-a distribution and current patterns in the Flores Sea waters each season. The study was conducted from August to October 2023 at the Inderaja Laboratory, Faculty of Marine Sciences and Fisheries, Hasanuddin University, Makassar City, South Sulawesi Province. The data used were monthly data for one year taken from the Aqua MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) satellite, chlorophyll data, while current data was taken from Marine Copernicus. The results of this study are the concentration of chlorophyll-a distribution in the Flores Sea waters in 2021 showing that the distribution of chlorophyll-a varies greatly according to the season. The highest concentration of chlorophyll-a occurs in the transition season I and the lowest occurs in the transition season II. The current in the Flores Sea waters has the highest speed in the west season and the lowest in the east season. Currents also affect the distribution of nutrients and phytoplankton that affect the fertility and primary productivity of waters. The presence of currents which are one of the oceanographies causes nutrients and chlorophyll-a to experience distribution according to the movement of the water mass that affects it.Keywords: Current patterns and distribution of chlorophyll-a

Abstract

Mangroves are coastal vegetation characterized by distinctive root morphology and adapted to tidal environments. They play a vital role as providers of organic matter and represent a natural resource utilizable by local communities. The objective of this study was to determine the mangrove community structure in Mangkang Wetan Village, Tugu District, Semarang City. The research was conducted from July to September 2024 across three observation stations within Mangkang Wetan Village. Analysis of mangrove community structure employed the purposive sampling method using a line transect with 10 x 10 m plots, replicated three times. The results of the mangrove community structure analysis in Mangkang Wetan Village identified only one mangrove species: Avicennia marina, present at the tree vegetation level. This species was selected as it is readily available in the surrounding natural mangrove forest, easily cultivated, and its stands provide significant resistance to coastal abrasion. Consequently, the study location constitutes a monospecific (homogeneous) mangrove forest.  The Importance Value Index (IVI) for mangroves at stations 1, 2, and 3 was consistently 300. The mangrove species diversity level in Mangkang Wetan Village was recorded with a Shannon-Wiener Diversity Index (H') value of 0, indicating relatively low species diversity. The species evenness index values at stations 1, 2, and 3 were also 0, reflecting low species evenness. The dominance index (C) value was 1, signifying the dominance of a single species. The low diversity and evenness values are attributed to the relatively uniform or homogeneous condition of the mangrove forest.

Abstract

Nusa Lembongan has high marine biodiversity, including seagrass. Seagrass is a plant that lives submerged in a marine or estuary water that functions as a nursery ground, trapping sediment, and beach protector, so it is important to know the condition of seagrass coverage, especially in Nusa Lembongan for managing the Nusa Penida Marine Protected Area. This study aimed to understand the condition of seagrass coverage and the factors influencing the existence of its ecosystem in Nusa Lembongan. According to reslut in two stations, it was found that six of the twelve types of seagrasses in Indonesia, namely Enhalus acoroides, Thalassia hemprichii, Cymodocea serrulata, Cymodocea rotundata, Halodule pinifolia, and Halophila ovalis. From the two stations (LMB01 and LMB02), the total seagrass coverage was 38.10±30.98% or the medium category. The seagrass communities in the station areas were generally formed by 3 types of seagrasses; Thalassia hemprichii, Cymodocea serrulata, and Cymodocea rotundata. LMB02 has higher seagrass coverage than LMB01. The seagrass coverage is inversely proportional to the intensity of human activity.

Abstract

The Togean Islands, located in Tomini Bay, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, are part of the coral triangle that encompasses the waters of Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Japan, and Australia. This region hosts a coral reef ecosystem that relies on ocean currents for nutrient distribution and coral larval dispersal. Maintaining the balance and health of ocean currents is crucial for the sustainability of this ecosystem. This study aims to map ocean current patterns in the waters of the Togean Islands during the 2021–2022 period using data from Copernicus Marine. A secondary data analysis with a descriptive approach was employed. Data were obtained from the Copernicus Marine platform and processed using SeaDAS and ArcGIS software. In 2021, the recorded current speed was relatively lower, ranging from 0.04 m/s to 0.16 m/s, whereas in 2022, the current movement was stronger, with an average speed ranging from 0.06 m/s to 0.21 m/s. The comparison of ocean currents in the Togean Islands showed peak values in December for both years, while the lowest average speeds were recorded in March 2021 and October 2022. These current patterns are influenced by seasonal factors and play a significant role in marine ecosystem dynamics. This mapping is expected to serve as a reference for the management and conservation of coral reefs in the Togean Islands.

Abstract

Mangrove forests are types of vegetation that grow under the influence of the rising and falling sea water. They play a crucial role ecologically, physically, and economically. However, without proper management, this ecosystem is at risk of harm. In Segarajaya Village, Tarumajaya District, Bekasi Regency, West Java, mangrove forests are threatened by human activities, such as clearing land for fish farming without preserving mangrove vegetation, along with pollution from plastic and household waste. This study aimed to assess the health of mangroves based on two aspects: (1) MHI parameters, which include canopy cover, individual density, and stem diameter; and (2) environmental parameters, which consist of salinity, water and air temperature, soil pH, and substrate type. The method employed is the Mangrove Health Index (MHI), which involves calculating the parameters of canopy cover, stake density, and average stem diameter at breast height, along with environmental parameters (salinity, water and air temperature, soil pH, and substrate) conducted from February 25 to April 20, 2025. The observation site was divided into three stations. Station 1 had the species Rhizophora apiculata, Avicennia marina, and Sonneratia caseolaris. Station 2 was populated with Bruguiera gymnorhiza and Sonneratia caseolaris, while Station 3 only contained Avicennia marina. The MHI value calculations indicated that the mangrove forest's condition falls into the moderate category, with an average MHI value of 61.78%. Station 1 recorded 62.69%, Station 2 61.63%, and Station 3 61.02%. The average values of environmental parameters were a salinity of 30.44‰, water temperature of 27.94°C, air temperature of 30.89°C, soil pH of 7.33, and substrates consisting of sandy clay and mud. This study aims to inform readers about the health conditions of mangroves and serve as a foundation for managing and protecting mangrove forests.
