Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to determine the relationship between socio-demographic characteristics such as age, gender, education level, employment status, time spent at home, length of residence, and proximity to landfill with public perception of air pollution among communities living near landfill sites in urban Indonesia. Study Design: Quantitative, descriptive cross-sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: Conducted in a landfill-adjacent urban area in Tanjungpinang, Kepulauan Riau, Indonesia, from May 6 to May 8, 2024. Methodology: A total of 50 respondents aged 18 years and above were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through structured questionnaires assessing demographic characteristics and perceptions of air quality. Statistical analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics and chi-square tests with a significance level of p < 0.05. Results: The study found statistically significant associations between education level and perception of air pollution (p = 0.020), as well as between employment status and perception (p = 0.020). Other factors—age, gender, time spent at home, length of residence, and distance from the landfill—were not significantly associated with air pollution perception. Conclusion: Education and employment status play a key role in shaping how communities perceive air pollution near landfill sites. These findings suggest that environmental health interventions should prioritize public education and awareness programs, especially targeting individuals with lower education levels and those not engaged in formal employment.

Abstract

Background: Landfills are recognized sources of emissions of various gaseous pollutants, including ammonia (NH3), which can cause odor nuisances. The Ganet Landfill in Tanjungpinang City is currently managed using an open dumping system due to operational limitations. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the dispersion profile of ammonia gas originating from the Ganet Landfill and to examine the differences in its dispersion patterns between the rainy and dry seasons. Methods: Ammonia concentration data were collected based on one-hour average measurements at ten monitoring locations: one at the landfill unloading area and nine at surrounding points, including residential zones and adjacent roadways. These data were utilized as input for dispersion modeling using AERMOD software. Meteorological data for the year 2023 were estimated using historical data from 2019 to 2023 to support the modeling process. Results: The monitoring results indicated that ammonia concentrations at all measured locations complied with the quality standard of <2 ppm. AERMOD modeling for one-hour average concentrations showed that the highest predicted concentration within the landfill area was 0.08 μg/Nm3. In both the rainy and dry seasons, the dispersion of ammonia was predominantly toward the southwest, aligning with the prevailing wind direction in the area. The seasonal comparison revealed a difference in ammonia concentrations at a 7 km radius from the landfill center: 0.001 μg/Nm3 during the rainy season and 0.002 μg/Nm3 during the dry season. Conclusion: The modeling results corroborated the monitoring findings, indicating that the highest concentrations of ammonia occur at locations closest to the landfill, particularly in the southwest direction, consistent with the dominant wind patterns. Keywords: Ammonia; air pollution; dispersion modeling; landfill; seasonal variation

Abstract

Clean and healthy living behaviours (PHBS) are habits practised by individuals or families that enable them to take independent action on health issues and play an active role in health initiatives both within the family and in the community. PHBS can start with oneself and one's family through clean and healthy habits in daily life. The implementation of PHBS is also an important step in preventing various diseases in children, especially diseases that are difficult to prevent, one of which is stunting. The target audience for this outreach programme was housewives in Kampung Sidomulyo RT 002/RW 13. The outreach programme was conducted through presentations and discussions. Before the outreach programme was implemented, a pre-test questionnaire was administered to determine the level of knowledge about PHBS related to stunting. Then, outreach material on household PHBS and clean water was provided. Following the presentation of the material, a discussion session and post-test were conducted to assess the level of understanding of the material provided. The results of the respondents' knowledge before the PHBS counselling (pre-test) were 5.12%, and the results of the respondents' knowledge after the PHBS counselling (post-test) were 5.94%. Socialisation of PHBS to housewives has been proven to increase their knowledge about the importance of implementing clean and healthy living behaviours in the household environment. This increased understanding plays an important role in encouraging the adoption of daily healthy habits, which not only maintain family hygiene and health, but also serve as a strategic step in preventing stunting in children. With better knowledge, housewives can play an active role as the main drivers of family and community health.

Abstract

Routine monitoring of larvae is one of the efforts to interrupt the chain of DHF transmission in Tanjungpinang City. There is a requirement for innovation and establishment of android and web-based applications to enhance entomological surveillance. The research aimed to evaluate the technological-based development in enhancing entomological surveillance programs. Research and development design was used in this study with the Prototyping Method approach. Data was collected from interviews and document reviews. The data were used as the basis for making application prototypes, which will be tried to see shortcomings and then revised using a questionnaire. A total of 30 study samples were accidentally collected. The evaluation of the generated application was determined by variables such as usability, reliability, functionality, efficiency, maintainability, and portability. The research instrument deployed a questionnaire to get a quantitative value using a Likert scale for each variable, which was subsequently examined by univariate analysis. The study successfully developed a model for reporting mosquito larvae monitoring using an Android and web-based system, with the name of a CIBERNATIK android application. After carrying out testing both through questionnaires and interviews, the results of the feasibility of the application were excellent (83,3% usable, 83,3% reliable, 76,7% functional, 83,3% efficient, 70% maintainable, and 56% portable). CONCLUSION: The user can effectively implement the application, but further development is needed to integrate it into the Health Office program. The application serves as a database for real-time and easily accessible information on the density of larvae. Additionally, it functions as an early alert system for dengue control in Tanjungpinang City.

Abstract

Mosque sanitation is an effort to control and monitor facilities such as clean water, toilets, waste management systems, and trash bins, which are related to the risk of disease transmission. Poor sanitation can trigger the emergence of diseases; therefore, routine maintenance, facility repairs, and adequate hygiene facilities are necessary. In the working area of Kijang Public Health Center, mosque sanitation issues are still found, such as uncovered trash bins, dirty and foul-smelling toilets, and the absence of tissues and soap. Inadequate ventilation and humidity also pose health risks to congregants. Mosque caretakers (marbot) play an important role in maintaining cleanliness and comfort within the mosque. This study aims to determine the condition of mosque sanitation and marbot behavior in the working area of Kijang Public Health Center. A descriptive survey design was used, through observation and interviews guided by Ministry of Health Regulation No. 2 of 2023. The total sample consisted of 18 mosques and 18 marbots selected using total sampling technique, with data collection conducted in March–April 2025 and analyzed univariately. The results showed that all mosque environments (100%) met the required standards, 16 mosque buildings (88.9%) met the standards, and only 10 mosques (55.6%) had sanitation facilities that met the standards. In terms of marbot behavior, 14 marbots (77.8%) had moderate knowledge, 9 marbots (50%) showed good attitudes, and all marbots (100%) demonstrated good practices. Continuous improvement of sanitation facilities and regular marbot training are necessary to create healthy and proper mosque environments.

Abstract

Climate villages are community-led efforts and methods in response to climate change. The purpose of the community service is to raise awareness of the importance of climate change adaptation and mitigation, and to collect rainwater as a water reserve solution for island communities lacking clean water supplies. Rainwater harvesting is a facility installed to provide water reserves during a clean water crisis, and plans for a hydroponic system can lead to optimal use of yard space to meet family food needs. Implementation methods include practical installation and maintenance. Results of the service include an increase in wastewater treatment plant (IPAH) facilities, an increase in the number of residents collecting and utilizing rainwater, and an increase in the number of island communities utilizing their yard space to meet family food needs. The PPDM program has facilitated the transfer of knowledge and technology, broadened insight, and maximized the potential of natural resources for vegetable cultivation in home gardens. The addition of rainwater harvesting facilities is expected to provide clean water reserves for island residents during the dry season.
