Abstract

This research aimed to find out the students’ access to ICT application and how far ICT application helps students in mastering English language skills faced by English students of English Education Study Program at the University of Bengkulu in the 2020/2021 academic year. This research was an explanatory sequential mixed methods design. The population of this research was English students of English Education Study Program at the University of Bengkulu. The sample of this research was selected by using purposive sampling technique, totaling 80 students for questionnaire and 24 students for interview. The data were collected by using questionnaire and interview. The instruments were consisted of 15 items adapted from Dang Hoang Tri and Nhung Hong Thi Nguyen (2014). This research used Microsoft Excel to analyze the data.  The result of this study showed that students access 15 ICT applications in English learning. Also, researcher found that the majority of students have positive perception towards ICT application can help students in mastering English language skills.

Abstract

Abstract This research aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the Mistake Buster technique in improving the students` grammar mastery at seven grade students of junior high school number 11 of Bengkulu City. Collaborative classroom action research was carried out and it had two cycles designed with four steps; Planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting on the action. The subjects of this research consisted of 32 students. The instruments were a test, observation checklist, and field note. The result showed that there was an improvement in students` grammar mastery by applying the Mistake Buster technique in the grammar teaching. It seemed that the Mistake Buster technique is quite effective to help the students` grammar mastery, to encourage students` motivation, and to build an active learning atmosphere in the EFL teaching and learning process. Moreover, the result provides teachers with more insight and reference regarding to the technique in teaching English grammar and applying it to their teaching process.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the dominant types of interruptions employed by participants and to find out the purposes of interruptions done by the participants of Ellen DeGeneres show. This research employed quantitative descriptive research. The subjects of this research were two of the most viewed videos uploaded from October-November 2020. The interruption employed by the participants and the purposes of interruptions done by the participants were classified using an instrument datasheet following Murata’s theory. The first results of this research show that interruptions types done by the participants of the Ellen DeGeneres show namely cooperative and intrusive, and the dominant types employed in the Ellen DeGeneres show was a cooperative interruption. The second result finding showed all that the purposes of interruptions done by the participants of the Ellen DeGeneres show namely agreement, assistance, clarification, disagreement, floor-taking, and tangentialization.

Abstract

Teachers and students play a key role in the successful integration of ICT into learning English. ICT-based learning will only succeed if teachers and students have a positive attitude towards practice. In this context, an empirical picture of teacher-student perceptions is essential as a basis for integrating ICT into the learning process. The aims of this study are to explore and analyse students' and teachers’ perceptions, students and teachers’ challenges, and benefits for teaching and learning toward the use of ICT in Teaching English at BTA 70 course To explore and analyse students’ perceptions toward the use of ICT in Teaching English at BTA 70 course. This study was mixed method study. This study used survey research in conducting the research exactly cross-sectional survey. There are 416 students and 15 teachers who became samples in this study and to get the sample The writer used purposive random sampling. The writer used a questionnaire for collecting the data. They are closed ended questionnaires adopted in Chainda A. M (2011). The results of this research, the students’ perception showed there positive aspects for students such as making students can share information, enhance students’ learning, and doing science experiments safely, for negative aspects consuming students’ time and irrelevant information which students got on the internet. And students’ attitude showed the students agree the use of ICT is effective in learning. Then, The use of ICT gave students obstacles where the obstacles became the challenges for students itself. The challenges for the students themselves, irrelevant information and time management are challenges for the students in learning by using ICT. It can be concluded if there are benefits of ICT in the learning process. Such as, ICT helps the students to improve, and also the students can learn individually. Abstract

This study aims to find the rhetorical structure of Move and Step which are often found in the Speaking for Presentation class. Additionally, this research looks into the typical pattern of students’ presentations in the Speaking for Presentation class. This study used a mixed-method research strategy that incorporates qualitative and quantitative data. The object of the research is 30 video presentations of 4th-semester English education students from the Speaking for Presentation class at Bengkulu University. From this study, it was found that the rhetorical structures of the Moves and steps that are most often found in students' presentations in the Speaking for Presentation class are Greeting the audience, Introduction of oneself/other speakers, Announcing the topic of oral presentation, Hortatory/narration, Summarizing the points/conclusion, and Thanking/Thank you. Then, the second of the Moves and the steps that are most often found in students' presentations in the Speaking for Presentation class are Leading the audience into the content and Suggestion. Furthermore, the typical patterns found in student presentations are Obligatory and Conventional.

Abstract

The aim of this research is (1) to analyze the components of noun phrase errors that are often made by students in the introduction parts of their undergraduate theses, (2) to analyze the types of noun phrase errors that are often made by students in the introduction parts of their undergraduate theses, (3) to find out the differences between noun phrase errors made students in the introduction parts of their undergraduate theses. The method used in this research was mix method. The instrument comprised observation and documentation. The result of this research was as follows: (1) the most dominant component of noun phrase error made by UPI and Unib students in the introduction parts was a head error, (2) the most dominant type of error in noun phrases made by UPI was addition error; however, the most dominant type of noun phrase errors among Unib students was omission error, (3) the number of noun phrase errors in Unib was higher than those in UPI. It is recommended that students improve their mastery of noun phrases, that lecturers teach students how to write the introduction well, specifically on noun phrases, and that next researchers investigate additional aspects of noun phrases.

Abstract

The research aims to investigate the English teacher's challenges in teaching speaking through the online platform when the preparing lesson plan, while the teaching performing, and when the evaluating. This research employed a mixed-method sequential explanatory strategy to reveal the data-oriented to the aforementioned focuses. Fifty-two English teachers engaged as the correspondent of the questionnaire while thirteen English teachers were selected as the participant in the interview. They were selected based on the purposive sampling technique and taken from Senior High Schools in Indragiri Hulu Regency. To gather the data, the questionnaire and interview were deployed and were further analyzed by using the interactive model data analysis. The findings demonstrate that the majority of English teachers had a negative category in teaching speaking through online platforms with an average of total score 122. The challenges when preparing the lesson plan covered four aspects: prepare teaching materials, activity, media, and prepare evaluation materials. Subsequently, the challenges when preparing the lesson plan are the teachers should have not prepared online-based learning media, searched for online speaking topics, and searched for additional teaching materials. Moreover, the lack of internet quota and connection made the students got difficulty joining classes online. In turn, while the teaching performance is teachers difficulty in coping with students' behavior, difficulty in motivating students, and giving example topics on speaking online. Furthermore, in evaluating the teacher's challenges difficulty in assessing student assignments because at the time of online learning students there were only a few students who responded to the teacher. Further studies are expected to seek possible solutions regarding the challenges faced by the teachers in teaching speaking online.

Abstract

The use of AI tools in education is increasing in this age of technological progress. It is essential to comprehend how AI may facilitate the learning process and Assist students in overcoming challenges, particularly in writing.This study examined EFL students' perceptions of ChatGPT as an AI writing instrument. The study employed a qualitative methodology utilizing a phenomenological framework. The data was collected through interviews with five English Education students at the University of Muhammadiyah Bengkulu, selected for their perceived expertise to get comprehensive insights. The collected data was analyzed using theme analysis. The results indicated that students possessed favorable perceptions. Besides, students highlighted ChatGPT's significant role in enhancing the writing process by providing prompt feedback, facilitating idea development, and improving grammatical accuracy. They also found it useful for time management, expanding vocabulary, and generating topics. However, challenges such as ChatGPT's occasional provision of inaccurate information, the risk of fostering dependency, and network-related issues were also noted. Based on these findings, ChatGPT should be used only as a reference or consultation tool; students should use their critical thinking skills and verify ChatGPT responses with reputable sources.This study shows that ChatGPT can help writers, but educators and students must realize its limits.

Abstract

Teknologi dan pembelajaran kini tidak dapat dipisahkan. Kemajuan teknologi yang pesat seharusnya diimbangi dengan peningkatan keterampilan guru untuk mengintegrasikannya ke dalam proses pembelajaran. Namun, analisis situasi di SMP Negeri 18 Bengkulu Tengah mengungkapkan bahwa guru masih perlu memanfaatkan teknologi secara penuh untuk menciptakan pengalaman belajar yang menarik, interaktif, dan mengasyikkan. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk membantu para pendidik dalam mengatasi tantangan tersebut. Program ini melibatkan pelatihan dan lokakarya yang difokuskan pada penggunaan aplikasi Quizizz, menggunakan pendekatan penelitian partisipatif berbasis masyarakat, dan pembelajaran layanan. Evaluasi kegiatan dilakukan melalui penyebaran kuesioner dan diskusi kelompok terfokus (FGD). Hasil analisis data menunjukkan bahwa peserta sangat setuju bahwa kegiatan ini secara signifikan meningkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan mereka dalam menggunakan aplikasi Quizizz untuk pembelajaran. Sebagai kesimpulan, pelatihan ini sangat meningkatkan kemampuan guru untuk mengintegrasikan teknologi ke dalam pembelajaran. Oleh karena itu, kegiatan serupa dapat dilakukan secara konsisten dengan materi yang lebih luas untuk mendukung transformasi pembelajaran berbasis teknologi.
