Abstract

Introduction: Pulp and periapical tissue problems are 7th out of the top 10 diseases. Propolis from stingless bees is a natural substance that has been proven its efficacy in treating the diseases. Additionally, it is categorized safe for humans. This study aimed to determine the antibacterial activity of stingless bee propolis (Heterotrigona itama) ethanol extract on dental root canal bacterial growth in vitro. Method: This study was an experimental study with a posttest-only control group design and consisting of six treatment groups with concentrations of 3,000; 6,000; 12,000; and 24,000 ppm of stingless bee propolis, as well as a positive and negative control. Each treatment was repeated four times. Result: The result showed that there were no clear zones at concentrations of 24,000 ppm, but a clear zones appeared at concentrations of 3,000; 6,000; and 12,000 ppm. Stingless bee propolis ethanol extract is efficient against bacteria. At a concentration of 3,000 ppm, the inhibition zone's maximum circumference was visible.

Abstract

Background: Dental caries is a  process of tooth demineralization caused by acids produced from food metabolism in bacteria. One of the main etiological factors of dental caries is the microorganisms known as Streptococcus mutans bacteria. S. mutans is one of the components of human dental plaque that is associated with sucrose diet and high caries activity. Cucumber peel extract (Cucumis sativus L.) is known to have an antibacterial activity due to the presence of secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, steroids, alkaloids, saponins and phenols found in cucumber peel. Purpose: This study aimed to determine the antibacterial activity at the lowest concentration of cucumber peel extract (Cucumis sativus L.) against Streptococcus mutans bacteria. Method: This study employed the disc diffusion method with a post-test only control group design. Streptococcus mutans bacteria were cultured on Mueller Hinton Agar media, and cucumber peel extract (Cucumis sativus L.) was applied as the antibacterial agent at concentrations of 0.01 g/ml, 0.05 g/ml, 0.1 g/ml, 0.2 g/ml, 0.4 g/ml and 0.5 g/ml with seven repetitions. Results: The results of the study showed that cucumber peel extract (Cucumis sativus L.) formed inhibition zones around the paper discs against the growth of Streptococcus mutans bacteria at concentrations of 0.4 g/ml and 0.5 g/ml. Conclusion: The concentrations of 0,4 g/ml and 0,5 g/ml are the lowest concentrations of cucumber peel extract (Cucumis sativus L.) that can inhibit the growth of Streptococcus mutans bacteria. Keywords : Antibacterial, Cucumber peel, Dental Caries, Streptococcus mutans

Abstract

This study aims to prove the effect of adding haruan fish extract powder (Channa striata) on increasing the strength of type II Glass Ionomer Cement (GIC) filling materials. The method used is a laboratory experimental method with a post-test-only control group design approach. There are 6 treatment groups, namely the addition of 10mg, 20mg, 30mg, 40mg, 50mg, and without addition (pure). This research was conducted at the Dental Materials Laboratory, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry Study Program, Mulawarman University and PT. Sucofindo Samarinda. The study was conducted from August 2022 to March 2023. The results showed that the greatest compressive strength of glass ionomer cement (GIC) was found in pure glass ionomer cement (GIC) without the addition of haruan fish extract which showed a compressive strength value of 37.0 MPa. The more amount of haruan fish extract powder added, the lower the strength of the glass ionomer cement will be. There is a difference in compressive strength between pure glass ionomer cement (GIC) without haruan fish extract powder and glass ionomer cement (GIC) with haruan fish extract. In conclusion, Glass Ionomer Cement (GIC) type II without the addition of fish extract powder must have the greatest compressive strength compared to the addition of 10 mg, 20 mg, 30 mg, 40 mg, and 50 mg. The addition of haruan fish extract powder decreased the strength of the glass ionomer cement and no color change occurred. Abstract

Pendahuluan: Porphyromonas gingivalis adalah bakteri yang sering terjadi pada kasus periodontitis dengan prevalensi 40-100%. Spesies sarang semut jenis Myrmecodia tuberosa Jack merupakan tanaman yang banyak ditemukan disekitaran hutan Kalimantan Barat, dan memiliki berbagai senyawa aktif yang terkandung didalamnya, seperti flavonoid, tannin, dan polifenol. Tujuan Penelitian: Untuk mengetahui aktivitas antibakteri ekstrak tanaman sarang semut terhadap pertumbuhan bakteri Porphyromonas gingivalis secara in vitro. Bahan dan Metode: Penelitian eksperimental dengan 20 kelompok uji yaitu perlakuan dengan konsentrasi 125 mg/mL, 62,5 mg/mL, 31,25 mg/mL, 15,625 mg/mL, 7,81 mg/mL, 3,90 mg/mL, 1,95 mg/mL, 0,97 mg/mL, 0,48 mg/mL, 0,24 mg/mL, 0,12 mg/mL, 0,06 mg/mL, 0,03 mg/mL, 0,015 mg/mL, 0,007 mg/mL, 0,003 mg/mL, 0,0019 mg/mL, 0,0009 mg/mL, 0,0004 mg/mL, 0,0002 mg/mL, kelompok kontrol positif (Chlorhexidine gluconate 0,2%) dan kelompok kontrol negatif (DMSO 10%) dengan metode mikrodilusi untuk melihat kadar hambat minimum. Hasil Penelitian: Hasil penelitian menunjukan adanya aktivitas antibakteri yang ditandai dengan sumuran jernih pada beberapa konsentrasi, selain itu antibakteri yang dimiliki bersifat bakteriostat. Kesimpulan: ekstrak etanol sarang semut memiliki kemampuan untuk menghambat bakteri penyebab periodontitis kronis P.gingivalis.

Abstract

Down’s Syndrome yang dikenal sebagai trisomi21, merupakan kelainan kromosom yang ditandai dengan peningkatan materi genetik dari kromosom 21. Secara umum penyandang Down’s Syndrome (DS) ditandai dengan gangguan perkembangan kognitif dan mototrik. Selain tanda tersebut, penyandang DS juga sangat rentan terhadap berbagai gangguan kesehatan, termasuk masalah kesehatan gigi dan mulut. Bertolak dari berbagai keterbatasan yang terjadi pada penyandang DS, maka dalam kegiatan pengabdian ini penting untuk dilakukan intervensi untuk mencegah kondisi buruk yang bisa terjadi. Kegiatan pengabdian ini bertujuan memberikan  edukasi kesehatan gigi dan mulut pada penyandang DS dan diharapkan penyandang DS dan keluarganya dapat meningkatkan kesehatan gigi dan mulut mereka. Metode yang diterapkan dalam kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah pelatihan. Pelatihan dimaksudkan untuk mengembangkan kemampuan dan kesiapan keluarga anak penyandang DS dalam melakukan kebiasaan baik menjaga kesehatan gigi dan mulut. Penerapan kebiasaan baik ini dilakukan dengan mengintervensi penyandang Down’s Syndrome untuk melakukan sikat gigi malam selama 21 hari yang dipantau dan diharapkan akan menjadi kebiasaan oleh penyandang Down’s Syndrome dalam memelihara kesehatan giginya. Secara umum, program edukasi dinilai berhasil karena antusias peserta melakukan pembiasaan kebiasaan baik menyikat gigi  selama 21 hari. Dengan kegiatan ini diharapkan apa yang diberikan selama penyuluhan dan pemeriksaan kesehatan gigi dapat tertanam dengan kuat dan menjadi kebiasaan anak down’s syndrome dan keluarganya agar dapat memelihara kesehatan gigi dan mulutnya.

Abstract

Pendahuluan: Upaya dasar dalam pengendalian plak atau kontrol plak dapat dilakukan dengan dua cara yaitu secara mekanis yaitu dengan sikat gigi dan dental floss untuk area interdental yang tidak dapat dijangkau oleh sikat gigi dan kimiawi dengan menggunakan moouthwash. Selain itu terdapat salah satu metode perawatan yang berfokus pada bakteri penyebab kerusakan gigi yaitu dengan melakukan terapi bakteri pengganti bagi bakteri yang menyebabkan kerusakan, seperti dengan menggunakan bakteri probiotik. Adanya pengetahuan yang baik mengenai dental floss dan probiotik oral sangatlah penting bagi mahasiswa kedokteran terutama kedokteran gigi. Terjadinya perubahan pengetahuan dan sikap dapat dipengaruhi oleh beberapa faktor, salah satunya yaitu melalui media massa. Tujuan penelitian ini yaitu untuk mengetahui pengaruh edukasi kesehatan melalui media audio visual terhadap pengetahuan dan sikap terkait penggunaan dental floss dan probiotik oral. Metode: Penelitian kuantitatif dengan desain penelitian pre-eksperimental dan rancangan penelitian one group pretest-posttest tanpa kelompok kontrol. Data diperoleh sebanyak 60 sample dengan teknik purposive sampling. Pengumpulan data menggunakan kuesioner online dan intervensi menggunakan video animasi. Hasil: Terdapat peningkatan nilai rata-rata pengetahuan sebesar 8,47 menjadi 9,85 dan nilai rata-rata sikap sebesar 48,27 menjadi 50,72. Hasil uji Wilcoxon menunjukan terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan skor rata-rata terkait pengetahuan (p value = 0,005) dan sikap (p value = 0,010) sebelum dan sesudah dilakukan edukasi menggunakan media video. Kesimpulan: Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan terdapat pengaruh sebelum dan sesudah diberikan edukasi menggunakan media audio visual terkait pengetahuan dan sikap penggunaan dental floss dan probiotik oral pada mahasiswa Fakultas Kedokteran Universitas Mulawarman angkatan 2020-2021. Kata kunci: Media audio visual, dental floss, probiotik oral

Abstract

Sinusitis is one of the health problems that has increased significantly and has an impact on people's financial expenditures. Sinusitis is an inflammation involving the nasal mucosa and paranasal sinuses. This study aimed to determine the characteristics of patients with maxillary sinusitis in RSUD Abdoel Wahab Sjahranie Samarinda in 2016-2020. This descriptive observational study used 142 secondary data in the form of patient medical record data. The results showed that 2 people 11 years old (1.4%), 12-25 years old as many as 30 people (21.1%), 26-45 years old as many as 61 people (43%), 46 years old as many as 49 people ( 34.5%). There were 86 women (60.6%), male as many as 56 people (39.4%). Not working as many as 60 people (42.3%), students as many as 18 people (12.7%), civil servants as many as 14 people (9.9%), private sector as many as 50 people (35.2%). Types of dentogen sinusitis as many as 86 people (60.6%), rhinogen as many as 56 people (39.4%). The main complaint was fever as many as 1 person (0.7%), mucopurulent discharge with a foul smelling as many as 103 people (72.5%), headache as many as 24 people (16.9%), tooth pain as many as 14 people (9.9% ). The right side affected as many as 48 people (33.8%), the left side affected as many as 59 people (41.5%), right and left sides were affected as many as 35 people (24.6%). It was concluded that maxillary sinusitis was mostly experienced by women aged 26-45 years old, did not work, the type was dentogen with the main complaint of mucopurulent discharge that had a foul odor and was most often affected on the left side.

Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a manifestation of multi-factor hemodynamic balance disorders. Many treatments for hypertension have been proven to be effective, but there are some side effects that can be experienced due to the use of antihypertensive drugs, one of which can occur in the oral cavity. Purpose: This research aims to investigate the profile of hypertensive patients with oral manifestations at Abdoel Wahab Sjahranie Regional Public Hospital, Samarinda, from 2016 to 2020. Method: This research employed descriptive observational the data were analyzed univariately using 45 secondary data in the form of medical records of hypertensive patients with oral manifestations. Results: The results showed that ages ranging from 18-24=0, 25-34=0, 35-44=9, 45-54=15, 55-64=16, 65-74=5, 75=0. Gender in male=27, female= 18. Education D3=3, S1=12, S2=2. Job not working=8, household head=6, PNS/POLRI/TNI=9, self-employed=16, farmer/fisherman/labor=1, retired=4, others=1. Antihypertensive drugs amlodipine=37, captopril = 5, furosemide=3. Hypertensive patients with oral manifestations xerostomia=0, gingival hyperplasia=8, lichenoid reaction=0, stomatitis=8, periodontitis=20, gingivitis=9. Treatment of scaling and root planning=36, mouthwash= 8. It was concluded that the majority were aged 55-64, in males, at Strata 1 tertiary education, self-employed occupations, antihypertensive drugs which were often taken amlodipine, in hypertensive patients with frequent manifestations of periodontitis, and the treatment of scaling and root planning.

Abstract

 Latar Belakang:Masalah kesahatan gigi dan mulut  masih menjadi keluhan masyarakat yaitu karies dan penyakit periodontal.Karies disebabakan oleh bakteri Streptococcus mutans dan penyakit periodontal disebabkan bakteri Porphyromonas gingivalis.Mengurangi  pertumbahan bakteri tersebut dapat dilakukan dengan bahan yang memiliki sifat antibakteri salah satunya adalah daun tigaron yang memiliki sifat antibakteri. Tujuan: Mengetahui efek ekstrak daun tigaron terhadap pertumbuhan bakteri Streptococcus mutans dan Porphyromonas g ingivalis. Metode : Desain penelitian yang digunakan adalah post test only control group design. Uji yang digunakan yaitu disc diffusion (Kirby and Bauer Test) untuk menguji respon pertumbuhan bakteri terhadap agen antibakteri.Penelitian ini menggunakan bakteri Streptococcus mutans dan Porphyromonas g ingivalis yang diberi perlakuan ekstrak etanol daun tigaron  (Crateva Religiosa G. Forst) dengan konsentrasi 10%,25%,50% dan 70%.Kemudian dilakukan pengulangan sebanyak  empat kali. Hasil: Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tidak terbentuk zona hambat disekitar paper disc yang telah diberi ekstrak etanol daun tigaron (Crateva Religiosa  G. Forst) pada semua konsentrasi. Kesimpulan: Ekstrak etanol  daun tigaron  (Crateva Religiosa  G. Forst ) pada konsentrasi 10% ,25%,50% dan 70% tidak memiliki efek antibakteri terhadap pertumbuhan bakteri Streptococcus Mutans dan Porphyromonas Gingivalis.

Abstract

Background: Periodontitis is inflammation and infection that occurs in the periodontal tissue and alveolar bone supporting the teeth. Periodontal tissue examination should be performed to determine the severity of a periodontal disease. There are various kinds of examinations such as gingival index measurement, probing depth measurement, & bleeding on probing examination. Tiwai onions (Eleutherine americana Merr) have anti-inflammatory effects through the content of flavonoids and phenolic compounds. Objective: This study aims to determine the anti-inflammatory effectiveness of the ethanol extract of tiwai onion (Eleutherine americana Merr) against the clinical condition of post Porphyromonas gingivalis induced periodontitis rats.Method: The study was a true experimental method with the Posttest Only and Control Group Design method. The bacteria used was Porphyromonas gingivalis ATCC® 33277. This study consisted of 5 treatment groups using ethanol extracts of tiwai onions leaves with a concentration 140 mg/kg BW, 280 mg/kg BW, 560 mg/kg BW, sodium diclofenac 9 mg/kg BW and CMC. Data obtained by measuring the diameter of the gingival edema. Statistical analysis by using One Way Anova.Results: The ethanol extract of tiwai onion has an effect at a dose of 560 mg / kgBW on the clinical condition of the periodontal tissue by measuring the gingival index, periodontal depth and bleeding on probing in periodontitis rats.Conclusion: The ethanol extract of tiwai dose has an effect on the clinical condition of periodontal tissue by measuring the gingival index, periodontal depth and bleeding on probing in preventing periodontitis in male white wistar rats after Porphyromonas gingivalis induction at a dose of 560 mg / kg BW. Keywords: Eleutherine Americana Merr, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Periodontitis, gingival index, periodontal depth, bleeding on probing
