Abstract

This research deals with the diversity of learning as part the development of Interstate New Teachers Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC Standards) teaching model in teaching Modality. Regarding the use of modalities in English as foreign language for students in Indonesia,it cannot be denied that to most of the students particularly where this research is being carried out,  the students awareness of the of modalality limits up to the use of those modal verbs in text ignoring the context. In other words, the ignorance of cultural use occurs in which in contrast, language use must take tense and aspect into consideration. By that reason, the need of teaching modalities further is the main concern as the aim of this research. 80 students of the English Department of IKIP Mataram were involved as the subject of the research where formative assessment were found by applying ?learning style? topic. It was implemented b means of preparing the questionnaire consisting of 1-10 with three-color-box (a,b,c) in which the students were asked to color the box with question mark inside where eventually it was found that the students? diversity can be seen from their hobbies which they use as their learning styles. Most of students love to do sport exercise, watch movie, listening to the music, travelling, reading novel, and singing. Besides, it is also found that students are different in their learning style where some students prefer to learn by discussing, in peer, move around, learn in quite, or even to some of them, any situation things that can distract theirconcentration. In short, it can be concluded that the students are categorized as visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners.

Abstract

Abstract

The existence of non-educational background teachers (NEBTs) no doubt contributes to developing the quality of education but seems to lack attention. This research aimed to investigating the knowledge of NEBTs on pedagogical competence. A mixed method with explanatory sequential design was employed. The study was conducted in Central Lombok Regency. The total population was 109 spreading in 12 districts and three participants out of the total population were selected to participate in the interview. The instruments were a test in the form of multiple choice and an interview. The data from the test were analyzed quantitatively while the data obtained from the interview was analyzed qualitatively. The data of the test showed that the scores of four sub-aspects of pedagogical competence were 52.20 for the learning theories, 57.33 for students’ characteristics, 61.75 for the nature of education, and 84.30 for curriculum. Thus, the mean score was 63.90. The data from the interview showed that self-development efforts were low and the school supervisors and staffs role contributed only at the practical level. The research concluded that the knowledge of NEBTs was 63.90 in average due to the internal and external factors.

Abstract

The recruitment of teachers should consider at least two criteria by any institution before proceeding the next step of the recruitment. The two criteria are the teachers’ academic qualification and the teachers’ competency. This research aimed to find out whether the teacher with educational and without educational background have significant effect on the knowledge of pedagogical competence or not. Quasi-experimental research with pretest posttest nonequivalent comparison group design was applied in this research by which all teachers affiliated in PERGUNU Lombok Tengah as the population. The purposive sampling technique is used to determine the samples (two experimental group). The instrument which was in the form of pedagogical test had been tested its validity and reliability was distributed to collect the data needed and then the data was analyzed using ANOVA. The result showed that the score of F-test was higher than F-table in the significant level of 0.5. It meant that the teachers with educational background have a basic knowledge of pedagogical competence. However, the teachers without educational background had no basic knowledge of such competence. It could be concluded that there was a significant effect of teachers with educational background toward the knowledge of pedagogical competence comparing to those teachers without any educational background. In other words, the null hypothesis of this research was accepted and the alternative hypothesis was rejected.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of the Reciprocal Teaching strategy in improving the reading comprehension of descriptive texts among first-semester students in the English Language Program at FBMB UNDIKMA. Grounded in Vygotsky’s social constructivist theory, Reciprocal Teaching encourages active student engagement through four key strategies: predicting, questioning, clarifying, and summarizing. Employing a quasi-experimental design with a posttest-only control group, the research involved 37 students and utilized pretest and posttest assessments to measure comprehension gains. The findings revealed a significant improvement in students' reading scores following the intervention, as evidenced by a mean score increase from 66.84 to 76.89 and a statistically significant p-value of 0.000. These results suggest that the Reciprocal Teaching strategy is a highly effective approach for enhancing students’ understanding of descriptive texts, promoting not only improved academic outcomes but also greater engagement and metacognitive awareness. The study underscores the potential of Reciprocal Teaching as a practical instructional method, while also noting challenges such as time constraints and classroom management. Future research should explore broader applications of the strategy across diverse text types and educational settings.
