Abstract

Hyperglycemia is a state of high blood sugar with a value more than normal because the body does not produce insulin or insulin does not work properly. One of the plants that has the potential toas an antihyperglycemicactagent is mulberry (Morus alba L.) because the flavanoid content causes a reduction in glucose and fructose absorption from the intestine so that blood glucose levels fall. This study aims to determine the activity and dosage of ethanol extract of mulberry leaves that have the best effect on reducing blood glucose levels in zebrafish. This study used zebrafish (Danio rerio) induced by alloxan and glucose to raise blood glucose levels. The test animals used were 60 animals divided into 6 groups, namely group 1 positive control (Aloxan 0.1+ glucose 1% and Metformin 100 µM), group 2 negative control (Aloxan 0.1% + glucose 1%), group 3 without treatment, group 4 extract dose 200 mg / 2L, group 5 extract dose 300 mg / 2L, group 6 extract dose 400 mg / 2L. Then measured glucose levels using a glucometer (Autocheck®). The data analysis was performed by the Kruskal-Wallis test. The results showed that a dose of 400 mg / 2L had the ability to reduce blood glucose levels similar to that without treatment.

Abstract

Formulation of Ethanol Extract Capsules of Sambung Nyawa Leaves (Gynurae procumbens (Lour) Merr) with Varying Concentrations of Polyvinyl Pyrrolidone (PVP) Sambungnyawa (Gynurae procumbens (Lour) Merr) is known to have several secondary metabolite compounds including alkaloids, flavonoids, anthraquinones, saponins, glycosides and essential oils. The aim of this research is to obtain a stable concentration of PVP binder if formulated in granule form for encapsulation in ethanol extract of sambungjiwa leaves. The variation in PVP concentration used was 0.5%; 1.5 %; 2.5 %; 3.5 %; and 4.5%. Granules are made using the wet granulation method then put into the capsule shell and continued with evaluation. Based on the evaluation results of the ethanol extract capsule formulations of sambungjiwa leaves, it can be concluded that variations in the concentration of PVP as a binder can affect the physical stability of the capsule preparation, where the five formulas with different concentration variations have different stability after hygroscopicity testing. The formula that has good physical stability is the FK4 formula with a PVP concentration of 3.5%.

Abstract

The use of natural products has been widely used as a resource of new bioactive chemical compounds. One of them is the Paku Atai Merah (Angiopteris ferox Copel) tuber which has long been used empirically by the Dayak tribe of East Kalimantan as an anti-cancer. The purpose of this study was to determine the anticancer cytotoxic activity of the extract and fractions of Paku Atai Merah tuber against T47D breast cancer cells in vitro. Extract of Paku Atai Merah tubers was obtained by maceration method using ethanol solvent until obtained the ethanolic extract then fractionated using various solvents to obtain n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and aqueous-ethanol fractions. The cytotoxic effect was carried out based on the MTT assay. Phytochemical screening tests showed positive results for the presence of flavonoid, phenolic, tannin, saponin and steroid compounds. The results of the cytotoxic activity study showed that the ethyl acetate fraction had moderate cytotoxic activity in T47D cancer cells with an IC50 value of 84.8 µg/ml. Ethanol extract (513.06 µg/ml) and n-Hexane frsction (881.97 µg/ ml) were also included in the weak category. This study indicates that ethyl acetate fraction can be developed as a supportive therapy for breast cancer treatment.

Abstract

Kersen (Muntingia calabura L) fruits have the potential to be used as an active ingredient in sunscreens because of phenolic and flavonoid content that can absorb UV rays. This study aims to determine the percentage of erythema/pigmentation transmission and SPF value as parameters for sunscreen activity. Kersen fruits were extracted by maceration using 96% ethanol. The ethanol extract of Kersen Fruits was also fractionated to separate the components of the active compounds based on the polarity level using n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and ethanol as solvents. The test was carried out using the in vitro method by measuring the ability of the material to absorb ultraviolet light at a wavelength of 292.5-372.5 nm. This research was conducted at concentrations of 100, 200, 400, 600, and 800 µg/mL for ethanol, lyophilisate, n-hexane, and ethanol fractions, while the ethyl acetate fraction concentrations are 50, 100, 150, 200, 250 µg/mL. The results showed the best value at the ethyl acetate fraction concentration of 250 µg/mL with % Te of 5.28 and % Tp of 28.65 and the SPF value of 16.54. Based on the % Te and Tp, the ethyl acetate fraction exhibited protection against erythema and pigmentation with the category of extra protection and based on the SPF value with the category of ultra protection.

Abstract

Schleichera oleosa L. is traditionally used in herbal medicine and has shown pharmacological activities such as antioxidant, anticancer, and antimicrobial effects. Its antioxidant capacity is attributed to polyphenols, which neutralize free radicals and contribute to liver protection. This study evaluated the hepatoprotective effect of S. oleosa leaf extract against paracetamol-induced liver injury in rats. Antioxidant activity was measured using the DPPH method, yielding an IC₅₀ of 11.43 µg/mL, indicating strong activity. Rats were administered 50, 100, or 150 mg/kg body weight of extract, followed by 1000 mg/kg paracetamol to induce liver damage. SGOT and SGPT levels were significantly reduced in all extract groups compared to the negative control, with the 100 mg/kg dose being the most effective. However, curcumin showed superior protection. These results suggest that S. oleosa has hepatoprotective potential, but further studies are needed to confirm its long-term safety and efficacy.
