Abstract

The researcher's purpose in conducting this study is to find out whether there is a substantial difference in students' speaking skills in narrative text after the provision of learning using TED-Ed video as learning media for grade 8 students in one of the junior high schools in Gresik. The method used was quantitative experimental, which applied a pretest-posttest research design. There were two classes in this study, namely class VIII F as the experimental class with 32 students and class VIII G as the control class with 32 students. The teaching process in the control class used textbooks as media, while in the experimental class, TED-Ed videos. The research instrument used was a speaking skill test. The researcher used the Independent Sample T-test in SPSS 27 to analyze the results. The results showed that the significant value was .000, less than the significant level of 0.05. Therefore, it indicates a difference between the student's pretest and posttest scores. Then, to show the particular considerable value of the experimental class, the researcher calculated the effect size, whose value was 0.767, which means that the treatment that was given successfully significantly affected the experimental class. The use of TED-Ed videos as learning media for grade VIII students in one of the Junior High Schools in Gresik affected their grades in speaking skills on narrative text.

Abstract

This study investigates the effect of using Google Docs online learning media in conjunction with collaborative writing strategies on high school students' writing skills. The study took place at Surabaya's high schools, with 16 tenth-grade students participating. The research is a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest and posttest design. The study's design involved only one class in the treatment of Google Docs media in collaborative writing. The first research question focused on implementing Google Docs and collaborative writing activities in the learning process conducted by a teacher and students. The findings were determined from observational sheets. Further research findings for the second research question, which were derived from students’ pre-test and post-test scores, were examined using t-tests and presented quantitatively. Additionally, questionnaires were used to determine students' perceptions of the use of Google Docs as a collaborative medium in their writing studies. According to research findings, students' scores improved significantly following treatment compared to their pre-treatment scores. Cohen's d was used to determine the magnitude of the effects created by this study, and it was discovered that the effects were quite significant. The results for the second research question indicated that the learning process was done successfully. Students' attitudes towards the treatment also showed that most groups performed well during the activity. Furthermore, the third research question results indicated that the combination of Google Docs and collaborative writing methods elicited favorable responses from students. Thus, collaborative writing strategies utilizing Google Docs as a medium can assist Senior High School students in writing more effectively.

Abstract

Reflective skill is a component of 21st century learning and one of the main keys to become a professional teacher. However, pre-service teachers often have difficulty in reflecting their teaching and learning. Thus, this study aims to describe the reflective thinking abilities of pre-service English teachers in implementing their teaching practice. This research was a qualitative descriptive study. The research subjects in this study were 12 pre-service English teachers. The instruments used were observation of documents and interviews. The results indicate that pre-service English teachers tend to practice four reflective thinking skills that are reflection as retrospective analysis (ability to self-assess), reflection as a problem-solving process (awareness of how one learns), critical self-reflection (developing continuous self-improvement), and reflection on self-confidence. The most dominant reflective skill practiced is reflection as a problem-solving process. Meanwhile, testing internal consistency on problem solution become a difficult aspect to be fulfilled by the pre-service teachers. In brief, it is recommended that pre-service teachers should have more opportunity to practice their reflective thinking skills during the teaching and learning process in order to produce professional graduates who have high competitiveness and ability to face the challenges in the world of education.

Abstract

The purpose of service activity is to describe how to create learning materials using various types of text by bringing eco-literacy approach and participants' responses. Our partners encounter a challenge wherein teachers struggle to provide instructional materials aligned with the concept of environmental awareness due to the continued emphasis on teacher-centred learning. The consequence is the students’ cognitive skills remain at a low level, and a lack of interest in environmental matters. Eco-literacy strategies are the solution to develop teachers’ instructional materials that align with the principles of sustainable development and environmental awareness and enhances stuents’ active learning. Workshops and socialization were implemented and 30 primary teachers in Surabaya participated. The instruments were a pre-post-test and a questionnaire. The results indicate that the teachers' comprehension of eco-literacy concept has been enhanced. They can also develop materials and lesson plan based on eco-literacy approach. In addition, nearly all teachers express feelings of enthusiasm and happiness regarding this activity, and 85% indicated they enable creating learning activities. It was concluded that this activity could improve their knowledge regarding the concept of eco-literacy. It is suggested to employ engaging instructional materials to facilitate the realization of SDGs.
