Abstract

Introduction: Knee joint stiffness is a common musculoskeletal problem among older adults. Age-related physiological changes lead to a decline in physical function and mobility, resulting in a reduced range of motion in the joints. This study aimed to compare knee joint stiffness before and after the implementation of static flexibility training in older adults. Methods: This quantitative experimental study employed a one group pretest–posttest design. A total of 18 older adults experiencing knee joint stiffness at Betheseda Kasih Service Nursing Home were recruited using simple random sampling. Knee joint stiffness was measured using a goniometer and an observation sheet. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Static flexibility training was conducted six times over a two-week period (three sessions per week), with each session lasting approximately 15 minutes. Each session consisted of five movements performed for 10–20 repetitions. Results: Prior to the intervention, the mean degree of knee joint stiffness was 75° (classified as stiff). Following the static flexibility training, the mean degree decreased to 48.89°, indicating a return to normal joint mobility. The Wilcoxon test showed a statistically significant effect of static flexibility training on reducing knee joint stiffness (p = .000 < 0.001). Conclusion: Static flexibility training effective for improving joint mobility in older adults as a non-pharmacological approach. It is recommended to compare static and dynamic flexibility training effectiveness reducing knee joint stiffness among older adults in further study.

Abstract

Abstract

Low self-efficacy may influence on anxiety and avoidance behavior among school-aged children. Proper parenting style from parents is needed to prevent these negative events to be occured. This social service program was carried out through counseling and simulation about parenting styles to increase the children's self-efficacy. Through discussions with parents, training and simulation it is hoped that parents will be able to open up their knowledge about children's self-efficacy. There are differences in understanding parenting patterns and self-efficacy before and after the program delivered.

Abstract

The global population of older adults is increasing steadily worldwide. The United Nations projects that by 2050, one in six people globally will be aged 65 years or older, many of whom are at risk of cognitive decline. Addressing both health and environmental concerns, Geriatric Game 0.1 was developed as an eco-friendly cognitive stimulation tool for older adults, utilizing recycled plastic bottle caps. This innovation aims to reduce environmental pollution, generate economic value, and promote a harmonious relationship between humans and the environment. This study aimed to examine the effects of Geriatric Game 0.1 combined with recreational brain gym therapy on cognitive function among older adults. Cognitive function was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE-11). A randomized controlled trial design was applied. The intervention group received two types of Geriatric Game 0.1 (puzzle and tic-tac-toe) alongside brain gym exercises, while the control group received brain gym therapy alone. Both groups participated in ten therapy sessions conducted over a three-month period (01 August– 30 October 2025). The study involved 15 older adults each group who admitted to the Psychogeriatric Ward of Dr. Radjiman Wediodiningrat Hospital, Lawang. Pre- and post-intervention data were analyzed using paired t-tests. The results demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in cognitive function in the intervention group (p<0.05). The mean MMSE score increased from 20 (moderate cognitive impairment) at baseline to 23.7 (mild cognitive impairment), reflecting a mean improvement of 3.7 points. Significant gains were observed in orientation, attention and calculation, and recall domains. In conclusion, integrating Geriatric Game 0.1 with brain gym therapy is an effective and sustainable nursing intervention for older adults with cognitive decline, while simultaneously supporting circular economy principles and strengthening nurse–older adult relationships

Abstract

The problem of hypertension in the elderly continues to increase due to many factors, one of which is being overweight. Overweight can be seen in the Body Mass Index (BMI) value. If the BMI is excessive, it will trigger an imbalance in the body or the risk of falling. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between BMI and the risk of falling in elderly people with hypertension at the Husnul Khatimah Elderly Home in Wajak District, Malang Regency. The study design used a cross-sectional approach. The study population consisted of 64 hypertensive elderly individuals, with a sample size of 55 hypertensive elderly individuals selected using simple random sampling. The independent variable was BMI, and the dependent variable was the risk of falling. Data analysis used the Spearman rank test. The results of this study showed that almost half (49.1%) of respondents were overweight according to their BMI; and had a high average risk of falling (63.6%). The Spearman's rank test showed a relationship between BMI and the risk of falling in hypertensive elderly people at the Husnul Khatimah Elderly Home in Wajak District, Malang Regency (p value 0.011; r of 0.339. It is recommended that elderly people lose weight and increase physical activity. Nursing homes should conduct initial BMI screening for elderly residents, and researchers should conduct further studies through health education on BMI management and the risk of falls in elderly people with hypertension.
