Abstract

The use of plants as raw materials for medicinal purposes has become increasingly prevalent due to the diverse secondary metabolites they can produce. Clove leaves (Syzigium aromaticum L.) are known for their antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anticancer, anesthetic, aphrodisiac, and antipyretic properties. This study aims to determine the levels of secondary metabolites in clove leaves using the LC-HRMS method. The results showed that the ethanol extract of clove leaves contained 34 compounds, with the compounds (-)-Caryophyllene oxide and Miquelianin having the highest chromatogram peaks at 9.714195% and 8.712299% of the compound composition, respectively.

Abstract

Abstract

Stunting is a disorder where the growth and development of toddlers is hampered due to malnutrition during pregnancy and this condition is known by looking at the child's body condition which is smaller than other children of the same age. Overcoming stunting is one of the programs of the Donggala Regency Government because of the large number of stunted children in the district, one of which is Powelua Village. Many factors can cause delays in the growth and development of toddlers, including toddler characteristics and socio-economic factors. The number of families at risk of stunting in Powelua Village in 2023 reached 58 children with a total of 150 Heads of Families. This community service activity aimed to educate the public that Moringa leaves have a very high nutritional content, especially their potential in preventing stunting. One way to prevent stunting is to provide education related to the potential use of Moringa leaves in preventing stunting which wass delivered in the form of lectures with material, as well in the form of leaflets, followed by a questions-and-answers session. Evaluation of achievement was carried out by providing pre-tests and post-tests to the community on the material presented with a success indicator of 74.27% of parents understanding the education provided. The results of implementing this community service activity showed an increase in knowledge of 88.67% with a very good category.

Abstract

Cloves, scientifically known as Syzygium aromaticum L., hold promise as a potential antiulcer remedy due to their rich composition of compounds, including high levels of phenolic compounds such as eugenol, eugenol acetate, and gallic acid. To improve bioavailability in the gastric environment, this study focuses on optimizing and evaluating a swelling granule system derived from clove leaf extract. The granules were produced using wet granulation with Carbopol, HPMC, and their combination as polymer matrices. Results indicated favorable properties in the swelling granules, with the optimal composition of 210 mg Carbopol, 36 mg PVP, and 404 mg Avicel pH 101. These granules exhibited a uniform particle size distribution, with 90.1% below 149 µm and 9.9% distributed across mesh numbers 100, 80, and 40. The formula with Carbopol polymer showed superior flow rate, compressibility, and swelling capacity compared to other formulations. The interaction between Carbopol's C=O groups and HPMC's hydroxyl groups significantly influenced parameters, especially swelling capacity. Thus, when combining polymers, potential chemical or physical reactions should be considered. The wet granulation process effectively preserved secondary metabolite levels from clove leaf. Further tests are recommended to evaluate the granulation's effectiveness as a delivery system for clove leaf extract.

Abstract

The study focused on analyzing the secondary metabolites present in the ethanol extract of Sonchus arvensis L. leaves (SALEE) and their impact on creatinine and urea levels when administered in suspension form at different doses. Phytochemical screening of SALEE identified alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols, saponins, and tannins. In the experiment, twenty-five white male rats were divided into five groups: a healthy control group (Group I), a negative control group (Group II), and three test groups (Groups III, IV, and V) receiving SALEE at doses of 200, 300, and 400 mg/kg BW, respectively. After inducing diabetes with streptozotocin and a 21-day follow-up period, creatinine and urea levels were assessed. The results demonstrated that SALEE administration significantly reduced creatinine levels and increased urea levels. Notably, the 200 mg/kg BW dose of SALEE exhibited a consistent and long-term effect. It was observed that blood urea levels fluctuated even in healthy and negative control groups during the 21-day observation period. In the group receiving the highest dose of SALEE (400 mg/kg BW), blood urea levels increased significantly on days 14 and 21, indicating a potential increase in the rats' appetite rather than renal function failure. Overall, the findings suggest that SALEE has promising potential to regulate creatinine and urea levels in the blood of individuals with diabetes, highlighting its potential for therapeutic and supplemental use.

Abstract

Juwet leaves (Syzygium cumini L.) are plants with antioxidant content that can protect the body from free radicals that cause degenerative diseases. The community of RT 09, Lambara Village has access to juwet plants that grow naturally in the surrounding environment, but their level of knowledge and understanding of the benefits of juwet leaves as a source of natural antioxidants is still low. This community service activity aims to increase the knowledge and understanding of the community of RT 09, Lambara Village, Taweili District regarding the benefits of juwet leaves as a source of natural antioxidants for health. Education was carried out through a lecture method with posters and brochures, followed by a question and answer session. Evaluation of the program's success was carried out by providing a pre-test before education and a post-test after education to 45 participants from the RT 09 community using a 4-question instrument related to knowledge about juwet leaves and antioxidants. The community service activity carried out on November 30, 2024, was attended by 45 participants and ran smoothly. The evaluation results showed a very significant increase in community knowledge. In the pre-test, the community's understanding level ranged from 32-44% for the four aspects measured (knowledge of the benefits of juwet leaves, the definition of antioxidants, the importance of antioxidants, and dosage). After providing educational materials, post-test results showed an increase in understanding to 90-98%. The participants' enthusiasm was evident in their active participation in the question and answer session and their positive appreciation for the program. The educational program on the use of juwet leaves as an antioxidant succeeded in significantly increasing the knowledge of the community in RT 09, Lambara Village, as indicated by an increase in the understanding score from 32-44% (pre-test) to 90-98% (post-test).
