Abstract

The practice of mokel eating or drinking secretly during the fasting hours of Ramadan represents a unique socio-religious phenomenon within Indonesian Muslim communities, yet it has rarely been examined in academic literature beyond moral or normative perspectives. Most existing studies frame the practice merely as a violation of religious obligations, overlooking the complex social dynamics that shape religious behavior in communal contexts. This study aims to analyze mokel practices through the lens of performative piety and hidden deviance to better understand the tension between publicly displayed religiosity and privately concealed religious transgression during Ramadan. The research addresses the following questions: (1) how do individuals who engage in mokel negotiate their religious identity within a community that strongly upholds the norms of Ramadan fasting? and (2) what socio-religious factors contribute to the emergence and persistence of mokel practices in Muslim society? This study employs a qualitative research design using a socio-religious approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation within selected Muslim communities where mokel practices are socially recognized. The collected data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify patterns of religious behavior, social expectations, and individual rationalization. The findings reveal that mokel practices are not simply acts of individual religious deviance but reflect a complex negotiation between social pressure to demonstrate public piety and personal limitations in fulfilling religious obligations. Individuals who engage in mokel often maintain outward participation in religious rituals to preserve social belonging while privately managing their religious shortcomings. This dynamic illustrates the coexistence of performative piety and hidden deviance within communal religious life, highlighting the gap between normative religious ideals and lived religious practices. The study contributes to broader discussions in the sociology of religion by offering a new perspective on hidden religious behavior in Muslim societies during Ramadan

Abstract

Through an exploration of how value-centered frameworks could thoroughly influence student development in an Islamic boarding school context, the present study aims to address the ongoing disconnect between spiritual values and academic achievement in the realm of higher education settings. The purpose is to conceptualize and statistically examine the Ruhul Ma'had Compass as a paradigm of unifying spiritual values and student development in Pesantren Mahasiswa Al-Hikam Malang. Utilizing the qualitative case study method of data collection, in which in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis are employed in conjunction with a theoretical application of spirituality theories, micro-foundational theories, and value-based education theories to uncover the underlying processes of value assimilation, the results of the present study indicate that Ruhul Ma'had serves as an ethical and intellectual guidance system in which the cognitive frameworks of the student are methodically imbued with essential values such as honesty, integrity, simplicity, respect, and independence, thereby informing student academic and life processes. Moreover, the Pesantren Mahasiswa Al-Hikam Malang slogan of amaliah agama, prestasi ilmiah, and kesiapan hidup is reinterpreted from an essentially symbolic perspective to an instrumental model of unifying moral, intellectual, and practical competencies. The study reveals that Ruhul Ma'had Compass provides a unique micro-level theory of understanding the application of spirituality in higher education, which places pesantren as a relevant global example of value-integrated educational systems that go beyond the traditional dichotomy of the study of religion and scientific exploration.

Abstract

Abstract

This study critically examines the practice of homework (PR) in elementary schools from the perspective of child well-being. Although homework has long been regarded as a pedagogical instrument to reinforce learning outcomes, discipline, and academic achievement, recent debates highlight its potential psychological and relational consequences for young learners. Using a qualitative approach with a library research design, this study synthesizes relevant scholarly literature on homework practices, student motivation, parental involvement, and holistic child development in basic education. Data were collected from academic journal articles, dissertations, and related scholarly sources, and analyzed through thematic content analysis to identify recurring patterns and conceptual tensions. The findings reveal four major insights. First, homework demonstrates academic ambivalence: while it may support cognitive reinforcement, excessive and repetitive assignments can reduce intrinsic motivation. Second, homework creates structural dependence on parental assistance, which may intensify inequality among students from diverse family backgrounds. Third, the dominance of academic logic in homework practices often constrains children’s rights to play, rest, and build meaningful family interactions. Fourth, emerging discussions on homework-free policies suggest the need for reconstructing conventional learning paradigms in elementary education. Based on these findings, this study proposes a conceptual model of homework reorientation centered on three pillars: classroom learning optimization, balanced child development time, and proportional school–parent educational partnership. The model emphasizes that effective education in elementary schools should not rely primarily on increasing academic workload outside school hours, but on enhancing meaningful learning experiences and safeguarding children’s psychological and social well-being. This research contributes theoretically to critical discourse in basic education by positioning child welfare as a central criterion in evaluating homework policies and conventional instructional practices.
