Abstract

Every concept in mathematics is related to one another. In addition, a concept can be a prerequisite for another concept. One concept in mathematics is the Pythagorean Theorem. In line with the results of interviews with mathematics teachers at SMPN Tublopo where there are still many students who do not understand the Pythagorean Theorem material and many students are still not focused and do not pay attention to the teacher during the learning process. So a solution is needed to solve the problems being experienced, one of which can be done is to do community service by implementing the Pythagorean puzzle media. Community service activities really help students understand the Pythagorean theorem material with the help of Pythagorean puzzle teaching aids. Based on the results of the pre-test and post-test, it can be seen that there was an increase of 270.83%. And based on the questionnaire, it can be seen that students find it easier to answer math questions, are happier and more enthusiastic when learning uses puzzle media. Students also find it easier to solve problems related to the Pythagorean theorem because of the help of puzzle media. Overall, we can see that there was a positive response from students after this community service was carried out based on the results of the questionnaire given after the activity ended.

Abstract

This research was motivated by the shift in the educational paradigm toward technology-integrated learning and addresses the disparity in facilities between urban and border area schools. It aimed to determine the effect of Photomath on students' cognitive abilities and to assess their attitudes, motivation, belief, and readiness towards its use in a border area school. The instruments employed were pretest, posttest, and questionnaire. This research serves as an initial study on the use of technology in schools located in border areas. A mixed-method approach was employed, combining qualitative and quantitative analyses. The qualitative analysis of student responses was facilitated by Photomath, while the quantitative method followed a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design. The findings showed a 36.25% improvement in algebra test scores. Students’ learning motivation reached 82.97% (very strong), belief in Photomath was 88.13% (very strong), and readiness to use the Photomath was 78.97% (strong). After using Photomath, students understood each stage of solving algebra problems better, indicating that Photomath supported their learning process. The implication is that integrating Photomath in border-area schools provides valuable support for students, particularly in self-directed learning.

Abstract

The numeracy skill of elementary school students in border area Nunpene East Nusa Tenggara is still relatively low. This is caused by the students’ habit use counting aid such as calculators. Therefore, it is necessary to have a Lecturer activity in the community to help elementary school students which aim to improve their numeracy skills. Because mathematics teaches various skills, one of which is counting. So that the ability to count is a fundamental thing that must be mastered by students when they learn mathematics. One of learning method that can be done to improve students' numeracy skills is by applying the Jarimatika method which involves the students' own organs directly. Indirectly cognitive and psychomotor abilities will develop simultaneously so as to increase the efficiency of students' counting speed. As for the steps of the service, the method are including the introduction of the counting method, assistance during the learning process, then providing an evaluation. The results of this training are that after the training, it can be seen from the posttest results that students have increased their numeracy skills using the Jarimatika method. As well as increasing the knowledge of mathematics teachers regarding the use of the Jarimatika method as an alternative method of numeracy

Abstract

Addressing complex problems requires multiple and sustainable solution strategies, highlighting the importance of students’ numeracy literacy. However, existing assessment practices often fail to capture students’ higher-order thinking and problem-solving flexibility, particularly in algebraic contexts. An open-ended, locally wisdom–based instrument is considered appropriate for fostering students’ problem-solving abilities; however, it is rarely implemented in regular classroom instruction. Furthermore, research on the development of open-ended numeracy literacy instruments within Timorese culture remains limited. This study aims to develop and validate an open-ended numeracy literacy instrument in the algebra domain to address this gap. The study employed a design-based development approach using Tessmer’s formative evaluation, which includes preliminary study, expert review, one-to-one, small-group, and field-test stages. Qualitative data were obtained from expert validation, student feedback, and interviews, while quantitative data were collected through student response questionnaires and test results. The findings reveal that the developed instrument meets the criteria of validity, practicality, and reliability. Furthermore, the instrument demonstrates moderate difficulty and acceptable discrimination, indicating its effectiveness in distinguishing students’ abilities. This study contributes a valid and reliable open-ended assessment tool that can support the enhancement of students’ numeracy literacy and promote meaningful mathematics learning in algebra.
