Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Most English students are still confused about the types of sentences and how to identify them. Also, most English students are not aware of the types of sentences. This study identifies what types of sentences are found in some short stories on the Story Weaver website and what type of sentence is mostly used. The qualitative method is applied, and a simple calculation is used to identify the frequency of each type of sentence. There are 12 stories with different levels based on most read by people. The data taken from the Story Weaver website and divided into four short stories with levels 1, 2, 3, and 4 based on the sorts of sentences: simple sentence, compound sentence, complex sentence, and compound-complex sentence. The data is selected by the most read people for each level. The data referring to sentences were identified and selected based on their types. The sentences were analyzed by their structure and types sentences based on the theory of Loberger and Shoup (2009). The result shows that the stories consist of 563 sentences. There are 374 of simple sentences, 35 compound sentences, 137 complex sentences, and 17 compound-complex sentences. From the result, it can be concluded that the most used type of sentence is simple sentence. The reason underlying the finding is that a simple sentence is suitable for beginners with easy words to help the reader quickly grasp the main point being made. Also, they convey a clear idea concisely and straightforwardly. In addition, simple sentences are commonly used because they are easier to read and understand, particularly for non-native speakers or those with limited language skills.

Abstract

This study examines the application of foreignization and domestication strategies in translating the bilingual profile book of POKDARWIS ‘Big Farmer,’ a community-based tourism organization of Desa Kertawangi, West Bandung, Indonesia. Utilizing Venuti’s translation framework (1995), this research identifies how the two strategies are employed to present Culture-Specific Items (CSI) as categorized by Espindola (2005) to both Indonesian and English-speaking audiences, enhancing cross-cultural understanding and promoting tourism. Through qualitative analysis, the findings reveal a tendency of foreignization strategy to preserve cultural uniqueness and a minor amount of domestication to ensure clarity and readability for international readers. The study highlights the importance of adapting cultural terms and region-specific references to maintain both authenticity and accessibility in translation. This research contributes to the broader discussion on translation practices in tourism and cross-cultural communication, suggesting that a mixed approach allows for effective cultural representation while accommodating the target audience’s familiarity. The results have implications for translation studies, especially in bilingual materials for community-based tourism.

Abstract

Kertawangi Village, located in Cisarua District, West Bandung Regency, has great potential as a tourist destination due to its mountainous topography and cool climate. The majority of the village's population relies on agriculture and livestock. The local government has strived to develop the village into an international tourist destination by forming a tourism awareness group (POKDARWIS) and initiated the 'Big Farmer' program in 2020. However, the lack of promotional media in both Indonesian and English hinders the progress of promoting this program as well as the village. This community service program aims to provide bilingual promotional media for Kertawangi Village by creating and translating a program profile and brochure that can be used by POKDARWIS and the local community. The method involved three main stages: planning, implementation, and evaluation. The data was primarily obtained from interviews with POKDARWIS members as well as local residents. The result consists of a bilingual program profile and brochure containing information about the history, vision and mission, core values, activities, products and services, partnerships, markets and customers, as well as the team behind the ‘Big Farmer’ program. The development of these promotional materials may enhance the visibility of Kertawangi Village as a tourist destination, support the local economy's sustainability, and advance community-based tourism.

Abstract

The rapid development of artificial intelligence technology, particularly in machine translation systems such as ChatGPT, has prompted extensive discourse regarding its efficacy compared to manual translation. This study aims to compare the quality of manual and ChatGPT-generated translations within the context of a tourism-focused bilingual profile book of ‘Big Farmer’, focusing on three analytical levels: lexical, syntactic, and textual. Utilizing a qualitative approach, the research examines the differences in word choice, sentence structure, and semantic accuracy between human and machine translations. The findings reveal that although ChatGPT excels in terms of speed and consistency, manual translation remains superior in preserving cultural nuances and linguistic subtlety, especially at the syntactic and textual levels. Distinct from previous studies that predominantly explored scientific, legal, or medical texts, this research highlights the unique challenges of translating a bilingual profile book in the context of tourism, where maintaining tone and brand identity is paramount. This study contributes to translation studies both theoretically, by expanding the knowledge base in English-Indonesian translation, and practically, by providing insights for translators on the prudent application of AI technologies in translation practices.

Abstract

Abstract

The existence of this interest can indirectly affect the existence of fast-food retail because of negative consumer perceptions related to fast-food retail. Therefore, several fast-food retailers have offered eco-friendly products, in great demand by Millennials. However, it is still rare for fast-food retailers to launch new outlets with green themes due to the adverse insight of fast food itself. It is also caused by data deficiency on consumer behavior intention towards green fast-food retail, even though the existence of this restaurant itself continues to increase, especially in West Java. Therefore, this study aims to examine the intention of millennial consumers in West Java’s green fast-food retail by applying the Theory-of-Planned-Behavior approach with the role of green knowledge, perceived green practices, perceived physical servicescape, and perceived price fairness. 402 respondents were gathered in this study by implementing TPB theory as the variable under study, supported by Green Knowledge, Perceived Green Practices, Perceived Physical Servicescape, and Perceived Price Fairness. A quantitative approach is employed and processed using SPSS and Smart-PLS. Based on the results, the company's green practices, physical service scape, and price fairness affect consumer behavior control which leads to a positive influence on consumer behavior intention in green fast-food retail. Another result proved that green knowledge has a positive and significant impact on consumer attitude

Abstract

The TOEIC® Listening and Reading Test has been updated since 2018 and has been utilized for various purposes. This present study attempts to investigate the challenges faced by EFL students in achieving certain desired scores on the TOEIC® Updated Test, particularly in the listening section. This study employed qualitative methodology and CBT (computer-based test) of TOEIC® updated test was used as the instrument. Data was taken from the test results of 52 participants who joined POLBAN’s (Politeknik Negeri Bandung) TOEIC® Preparation and Prediction for IISMA 2024 conducted in January 2024. The results reveal that in solving the listening section in the TOEIC® Updated Test, test takers encounter difficulties in 12 different targeted skills. Some targeted skills are considered more challenging than others, i.e., understanding information questions and tag questions in the listening part II and making inferences as well as understanding graphics in the listening part IV. Surprisingly, understanding graphics is one of the new types of questions in the TOEIC® Updated Test. The fruitful implications of this study, both theoretically and practically, will be further explained in this article.
