Abstract

This research aimed (1) to explore whether or not the use of Silent Way Method can improve the students’ speaking ability, (2) to disclose how effective is Silent Way Method in improving students’ speaking ability.The research applied the experimental design and the samples comprised 30 tenth grade students of SMU Negeri 12 Makassar divided into two groups namely experimental class consisted 15 students class X IPA 3 and control class consisted 15 students class X IPS 3. The data were collected by using two types of instruments: the speaking test and the questionnaires. The data on the students’ speaking ability were analyzed using the descriptive statistics, and the data on the students’ questionnaire toward the use of Silent Way Method were analyzed using Likert Scale.The research results revealed that (1) the use of Silent Way Method in teaching speaking had improved the students’ speaking ability; and that (2) the students’ responses toward the use of Silent Way Method were positive. In fact, the students stated that they found the teaching of speaking more interesting when the Silent Way Method was used to teach them speaking. Thus, the Silent Way Method was effective in improving the students’ English speaking ability; the students also found the method much more interesting when used to teach speaking.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to describe the reflection of the global capitalism system in Suzanne Collins’s novel The Hunger Games. This research also explains on how the influences between The Hunger Games with the portrait of the global capitalism in the world. The research uses qualitative descriptive methods trough sociology of literature theory. It focuses on the relation of intrinsic elements in the literary works with the reality aspect from the society. The data constitute both primary and supporting data. The primary data was taken from the novel itself The Hunger Games, while supporting data are taken from books, theses, journal and articles from internet which related to the topic of the research. The result of research shows that The Hunger Games novel represented the global capitalism system in many ways. The differences between Capitol and all districts considered as the symbol of capitalism system where the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. The government of Panem which stayed in Capitol can be easily to control and dictated the people across the countryside. The global capitalism system in the novel reflected through the way of government of Panem control the economic side, market value, and political side.

Abstract

 This research discusses the English code-switching that occurs in the drama Goji Kara Kuji Made, which is the source of the research data. This research aims to: 1) explain the code-switching that occurs in the television drama Goji Kara Kuji Made, and 2) describe the factors that cause code-switching and the function of code-switching that appears in the television drama Goji Kara Kuji Made. This study used the descriptive-qualitative method. The theoretical framework referred to is based on the theory developed by Holmes (2008). Based on the results of the analysis, it is known that the factors causing code-switching are background, topic, the purpose of the interaction, and lexical borrowing. Meanwhile, the functions found in this research are solidarity, group membership, creating distance, quotation marks, emphasizing certain messages, affective functions, and filling lexical needs.

Abstract

This objective of this study is to explore Edna’s effort to deal with the perspective of Creole society in the Awakening Novel. This research used descriptive qualitative method in order to analyze the novel. In addition, the research applied the social perspective approach with the use of Berger’s theory. The result of this research shows that Creoles believe that women are feeble, should maintain silence, and submit to their husband's authority. Edna faces difficulties in her efforts to establish her Creole identity as a victim of discrimination, Edna gradually reveals her response to patriarchy and then Edna’s efforts is she defies Creole norms by falling in love with Robert Lebrun, sending her children to live with their grandmother, leaving her husband's home, and having an affair based solely on physical attraction with Alcee Arobin before committing suicide. Abstract

This research discusses the transformation of knowledge and maritime culture of the Makassar Bugis people in South Sulawesi which is caused by developments in science, technology, and socio-economic transformation. The method used in this research is qualitative research, with analysis looking at the relationship between the main aspects of the transformation that occurred in the maritime knowledge and culture of the Makassar Bugis people. The research results show that maritime transformation is occurring rapidly at present, marked by a shift in boat propulsion and navigation technology from traditional to modern. Structural transformation in maritime culture refers to significant changes in the social, economic, and cultural structures in maritime communities. Factors such as globalization, technological modernization, and economic changes are driving this transformation.The transformation of maritime culture influences traditional values ​​and practices, while access to modern knowledge enriches the way society interacts with the sea and maritime resources.
