Abstract

Technological developments in society have encouraged the formation of a new era, namely society 5.0, where digital technology is inherent in humans, specifically in generation Z. This study aims to analyze the digital literacy levels of generation Z in learning English and examine the relationship between digital literacy competency and academic success in English. It also explores effective strategies for teachers to enhance digital literacy among students to improve their learning outcomes in the classroom. A sequential explanatory mixed-method approach was used, involving senior high school students and teachers in Bengkulu City. Data collection combined questionnaires to assess students' digital literacy competencies and in-depth interviews using the think-aloud protocol technique to gather qualitative insights. The data were analyzed using an independent sample T-test to examine the correlation between digital literacy and academic success. The findings reveal that students in senior high schools in Bengkulu have good digital literacy skills in English learning. Furthermore, the correlation analysis indicates that higher digital literacy proficiency positively affects students' success in learning English. In addition, teachers have employed some strategies to increase generation Z's proficiency with digital literacy to improve the success of English learning in the classroom.

Abstract

This research seeks to explore the perception of the fourth-semester Social Sciences students regarding the use of ChatGPT as a tool for English language learning at UINFAS Bengkulu, particularly concerning learning autonomy, critical thinking skills, and ethical considerations. The study utilized a descriptive qualitative method within the UTAUT2 framework. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis with ten purposively sampled participants. Students largely view ChatGPT primarily as a transactional tool for quickly gaining access to vocabulary, translation, and even the completion of assignments. While there are perceived outputs and limitations such as inaccuracies (90% of respondents), risks of output creativity (70%) that are noted, there is still a practical adoption owing to the device’s usability and immediacy. Performance expectancy along with peer influence, hedonic motivation, and institutional guidance that is absent also remain as key adoption drivers. There are fears of stunting personal initiative and promoting skill stagnation through unrestricted autonomous control. This study applies UTAUT2 for the first time regarding the use of ChatGPT in learning English in a non-Western multilingual setting—Indonesia. It constructs distinct user profiles “critical pragmatists,” “intellectual minimalists and describes “critical passivity,” which is the behavioral unresponsiveness to limitations of awareness, which has not been captured in previous literature. The research results set forth tangible approaches to address the AI-academic integrity imbalance, such as the development of pedagogical frameworks incorporating AI, curricula on digital literacy, and institutional governance. This addresses the myriad shortcomings of the theories of acceptance of technology and is a contribution towards Global South educational settings grappled with AI incorporation.

Abstract

Writing in English is often challenging for students, especially in organizing ideas, developing coherence, and applying accurate grammar. Narrative text, although commonly introduced in language classes, has not been fully explored as a medium to foster creativity and strengthen writing competence in student-led communities. This study aims to analyze students’ perceptions of the use of narrative text in writing activities at the English Students Community (ESCO) of the English Study Program, Fatmawati Sukarno State Islamic University Bengkulu. Using a qualitative descriptive method, data were obtained from 39 fourth-semester students through questionnaires and in-depth interviews. The findings indicate that most students perceived narrative text writing as useful for generating ideas, structuring paragraphs, enriching vocabulary, and improving grammar mastery. Participation in narrative-based writing activities also increased students’ motivation and confidence in both spoken and written English. However, some challenges were reported, such as difficulties in plot development, character creation, conflict resolution, vocabulary limitation, and time management. In conclusion, narrative text provides not only academic benefits but also motivational value, encouraging students to be more active in writing practices. This study suggests the importance of providing guidance in story construction, incorporating peer feedback, and strengthening writing communities as a way to enhance English proficiency.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore the optimal and efficient pedagogical and cybergogy transformation for both teachers and students in the era of artificial intelligence (AI) in English subjects at Madrasah Aliyah of Darussalam Modern Islamic Boarding School, Kepahiang, Bengkulu since the use of AI in English subject at Islamic boarding schools has been notably inadequate due to many primary concerns. The restricted technological infrastructure includes inadequate internet connectivity and insufficient access to AI gear and software. By examining the dynamics within the school, the study seeks to empower students to enhance their critical thinking, reflection, creativity, and productivity in the digital-based education era. This study used a qualitative descriptive approach, the researchers collected data through visual observation and interviews with the English teachers and students. In analyzing the data, the researchers used the interactive model of triangulation data that developed by Miles and Hubermann. The study's findings reveal several key elements for the effective implementation of pedagogical and cybergogy transformations. First, customization of learning is essential. With AI, teachers can personalize instructional materials and methods to meet individual students' needs, skill levels, and learning styles. Interactive technologies are also critical, as they increase student engagement and foster collaborative online learning. AI technology provides quick feedback and automates assessments, streamlining the evaluation process. Additionally, AI can be used to source and deliver authentic educational materials, such as news articles, podcasts, or videos, aligned with students' competence levels. Beyond improving language proficiency, AI helps develop students' critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills. To fully leverage AI, teachers must also enhance their digital competencies, enabling them to integrate AI effectively into their teaching and guide students in using these technologies responsibly and ethically.
