Abstract

This study is based on the importance of applied, contextual, and relevant mathematics learning that meets the needs of the workplace and entrepreneurship. This study aims to develop a mathematics learning design for compound probability events by applying a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model contextualized with volleyball. This study employs a design research method consisting of three stages: preliminary design, teaching experiment, and retrospective analysis, conducted at SMKN 1 Rengasdengklok, involving two classes: a small class with 12 students and a large class with 35 students from class X TJKT 1. Data was collected by recording classroom activities and group work, collecting students' work, administering achievement tests, and interviewing them. This study demonstrates that volleyball as a contextual medium fosters improved conceptual understanding of compound probability among vocational high school students. The retrospective analysis of the learning process showed that through activities linking probability to volleyball games, students developed understanding through experiences such as calculating the probability of a successful serve or the ball entering or exiting the court, facilitated through Student Worksheets with a volleyball context. Based on this research, it is recommended that the Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach with a volleyball context be applied in probability learning at vocational high schools.

Abstract

Abstract

Mathematical problem-solving abilities in trigonometry material remain a challenge for many students, partly because they lack self-directed learning skills to manage the learning process. This research aims to analyze the relationship between self-directed learning and students' mathematical problem-solving abilities in trigonometry material. The research approach is quantitative, using a correlational method. The research sample consists of 62 vocational high school students in Karawang Regency, selected through random sampling. The research instruments include a self-directed learning questionnaire and an essay test of problem-solving abilities. The questionnaire measures initiative, responsibility, self-regulation, and students' evaluative abilities in the learning process, while the problem-solving ability test assesses students' abilities to understand, plan, execute, and evaluate trigonometry problem solutions. Data analysis was conducted using the Pearson correlation test. The research results show a strong, significant positive relationship between self-directed learning and mathematical problem-solving abilities, with a correlation coefficient of r = 0.679 and a significance value of < 0.001. These findings indicate that increased self-directed learning tends to be followed by greater ability to solve mathematical problems.

Abstract

This quantitative study aimed to examine the simultaneous and partial effects of self-efficacy and gender on mathematics learning outcomes related to circle equations among high school students. Employing a multiple regression design, the research involved 139 twelfth-grade students from SMA Negeri 7 Tambun Selatan, selected via simple random sampling. Data were collected through a self-efficacy questionnaire analyzed using the Successive Interval Method and an essay-based test for learning outcomes. Multiple regression analysis, after fulfilling classical assumptions, revealed that self-efficacy and gender significantly influenced learning outcomes simultaneously (F = 1025, p < 0.00). Partially, self-efficacy emerged as a significant predictor, with a positive coefficient (β = 0.585, t = 5.969, p < 0.001), indicating that higher self-efficacy is associated with improved cognitive achievement. Conversely, gender showed no significant partial effect (p > 0.05). Additional correlation analysis indicated a stronger relationship between self-efficacy and learning outcomes in male students (  = 0.545) compared to female students (  = 0.348). Nonetheless, self-efficacy remained the primary explanatory factor for cognitive achievement in both groups. These findings underscore the dominant role of self-efficacy as the key determinant of success in learning circle equations, surpassing the influence of gender.

Abstract

This study aims to develop an ICON-based student worksheet (LKPD) on matrix material for high school students and to examine its validity, practicality, and effectiveness. ICON refers to the Interpretation–Construction design model, which emphasizes students’ processes of interpreting contextual problems and constructing mathematical concepts. The research employed the Plomp development model consisting of the preliminary, prototyping, and assessment phases, supported by formative evaluation through expert review, one-to-one trials, small-group trials, and field test. The results indicate that the LKPD achieved a fairly valid level based on expert evaluations of content, construct, and language and was revised accordingly. The worksheet also demonstrated practicality, as students found the instructions and activities easy to understand. Effectiveness was indicated by 22 out of 34 students achieving the Learning Objective Achievement Criteria (KKTP). These findings suggest that the ICON-based worksheet is feasible for use with revisions to support students’ conceptual understanding of matrix concepts.
