Abstract

Abstract

This research aims to uncover the form and function of hegemonic masculinity in intergender relationships so as to influence readers' understanding of the concept of masculinity. This research utilizes a qualitative approach to literary criticism of masculinity by Connell which was chosen because it is able to explain the power relations between men and between men and women. This study analyzes the dialogue and narrative in the Novel Ayah... Buya Hamka's story is through the technique of listening, purposive sampling, and the flow of Miles' analysis. The results of the study identified 35 findings divided into four categories: social constructs (25 findings) that show masculinity norms are shaped through cultural expectations; gender hierarchy (4 findings) that affirm the dominant position of men in intergender relations; the role of popular culture (1 finding) that reinforces masculine values from outside the text; and subordination (5 findings) that show the weakening of non-dominant forms of masculinity in order to maintain masculine hegemony. Overall, this study shows that the representation of masculinity in literature is intertwined with broader social and cultural structures. In addition, the recommendations of the study further explore the impact of hegemonic masculinity in other literary works and its influence on people's views on gender across cultural contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the construction and transformation of Minangkabau identity in Indonesian literary works published between 2008 and 2025. Using an anthroposentric literary approach, the research investigates how human-centered cultural values, norms, and beliefs associated with Minangkabau ethnicity are narrated, challenged, or maintained in contemporary fiction. The analysis focuses on selected novels and short stories written by both Minangkabau and non-Minangkabau authors, identifying recurring themes such as adat, migration, gender roles, and intergenerational conflict. The method combines textual interpretation with cultural contextualization to uncover how literature reflects or reconfigures the image of Minang identity in response to changing national and global contexts. The results reveal that while many works reaffirm traditional Minangkabau values, others offer critical perspectives that depict internal tensions and evolving identities, especially among younger generations. The study shows that Minang identity in literature is dynamic, marked by a constant negotiation between heritage and modernity.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the utterances of marginalized characters in Okky Madasari’s Pasung Jiwa and Kerumunan Terakhir as performative acts containing resistance to dominant social structures. This research is a qualitative descriptive type with a feminist approach. The research data consists of narrative excerpts, monologues, and dialogues containing performative utterances. Data collection was carried out through intensive reading. The analysis focused on how these utterances form performative acts in the character’s social context, and function as discursive practices that reproduce or challenge norms of identity and power. The results of the study show that language is not merely an expression of personal experience, but a form of performative act that contains resistance to dominant social structures. The language in the characters’ utterances can be used as a means to restructure the social order. Through the concept of linguistic performativity by Austin and Butler, the language spoken by the characters is present as a tool for negotiating meaning and power. Language becomes a space of resistance that challenges the boundaries of social norms, challenges the truth claims conveyed by the majority, and invites readers to see reality from other perspectives that tend to be marginalized.

Abstract

This study examines the development of Indonesian digital literature through the identification of its forms and the accompanying methodological implications. Although literary production in the digital space is increasingly abundant and has received academic attention, there is still little attention examining the diversity of forms and its methodological consequences that arise from differences in material and medium. Two main problems that guide this study are how have Indonesian digital literary forms developed as a medium of expression, and what methodological challenges arise in examining them. This study then uses a historical-material approach borrowing Bolter and Grusin's media remediation framework. This study identifies four main categories: Material Digital Literature, Web-based Literature, App-based Literature, and Chat Literature as well as Generative Literature. Each form demonstrates transformations in the production and reception of literary texts, which require different methodological approaches. This article’s argument emphasizes the importance of alignment between method, medium form, and interpretive validity in the study of digital literature. These findings encourage the development of an adaptive approach in the study of Indonesian digital literature to achieve a sharp understanding of technological and authorial aspects.
