Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to analyze the application of situational leadership of elementary school principals in the archipelago to strengthen teacher professionalism and improve the quality of learning. This study focuses on the three main dimensions of situational leadership, namely diagnostic, adaptive, and professional strengthening, as reflective leadership models relevant to the context of education with limited resources. Method: This study used a descriptive qualitative approach involving three elementary schools in Simeulue Regency, Aceh Province, Indonesia. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participatory observations, and documentation studies, and then analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña interactive model, which included data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The validity of the data was strengthened through the triangulation of sources and methods. Results: The results of the study show that school principals have diagnostic skills in recognizing teacher readiness through reflective, supervision, and open communication. The adaptive dimension is reflected in the principal’s flexibility in adjusting the leadership style from directing to delegating based on the teacher's level of competence. The dimension of professional strengthening can be seen through the role of school principals as mentors, facilitators, and motivators who foster collaboration and appreciation of teacher innovation. These three dimensions form a reflective leadership cycle that encourages the creation of a collaborative learning environment responsive to the context of island schools. Novelty: This model highlights that leadership effectiveness relies not only on the appropriateness of leadership style, but also on teachers’ contextual sensitivity, empathy, and sustained professional growth, forming a holistic and human-centered approach to educational leadership.

Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to analyze how school principals apply adaptive leadership to improve teacher performance in archipelagic areas with limited educational resources. This study aimed to identify adaptive leadership patterns that emerge in various geographical contexts and examine their influence on teacher motivation, professionalism, and work culture in junior high schools in Simeulue Regency, Aceh Province, Indonesia. Methods: This study used a descriptive qualitative approach involving three state junior high schools: SMPN 1 Simeulue Tengah, SMPN 1 Simeulue Timur, and SMPN 2 Teupah Barat. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participatory observations, and documentation studies of nine informants, comprising three principals and six teachers. Data analysis was carried out with an interactive model that included data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing, and was validated through triangulation of sources and methods to ensure the validity of the findings. Results: The results of the study show that the adaptive leadership of school principals is manifested in four main contextual styles: transformational, democratic, participatory, and spiritual. Transformational leadership dominates the central region, democratic leadership the coastal region, and participatory-spiritual leadership the outer island region. Adaptive leadership has been proven to increase motivation, professionalism, and cohesion of teachers' work culture through innovation, collaboration, and moral commitment, even in the midst of limited facilities and administrative burden. Novelty: This study integrates spiritual and socio-cultural values within the framework of adaptive leadership, resulting in a contextual adaptive leadership model relevant to schools in the archipelago. These findings expand adaptive leadership theory by emphasizing humanistic and value-based dimensions in the context of Indonesian education.

Abstract

In the context of Simeulue Regency, Aceh, teachers are required to adapt to these limitations by developing practical strategies for utilizing available learning media. This study aims to explore and analyze teacher strategies in utilizing learning media, focusing on the types of media used, instructional planning, classroom implementation, and perceived effects on student engagement and learning processes. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study design conducted in three public elementary schools (SDN 8, SDN 13, and SDN 14 Simeulue). Data were collected through classroom observations, in-depth interviews with nine teachers and three school principals selected purposively, and documentation analysis. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis involving data reduction, categorization, and interpretation to identify recurring patterns of strategy use. The findings indicate that teachers predominantly utilize visual media (pictures and charts), real objects from the surrounding environment, and simple digital media. These strategies are perceived by teachers to enhance student motivation, participation, and conceptual understanding, as reflected in increased classroom interaction, student responsiveness, and attentiveness during learning activities. However, the effectiveness of media utilization is influenced by supporting factors such as teacher creativity and school leadership support, as well as inhibiting factors including limited facilities and teachers’ digital competencies. This study contributes to a contextual understanding of how learning media are strategically utilized in resource-limited elementary schools and highlights that media function as pedagogical supports rather than determinants of measurable academic achievement. The findings suggest that sustainable media utilization requires continuous professional development and institutional support tailored to rural school contexts.

Abstract

This study examines the planning, implementation, and evaluation of coaching-based academic supervision as an effort to improve teacher performance at the junior high school level. Employing a descriptive qualitative design, the study involved 12 participants consisting of school principals, teachers, and school supervisors. Data were collected over a three-month period through observation, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis using purposive sampling. Data analysis followed an interactive model comprising data reduction, data display, and verification, supported by restatement, analytical description, and interpretation to capture patterns, relationships, and meanings within the supervision process. The findings reveal that (1) supervision planning is systematically conducted at the beginning of the academic year through deliberation, needs analysis, goal formulation, instrument preparation, and scheduling; (2) the implementation of coaching-based academic supervision follows three stages—pre-observation, classroom observation, and post-observation—emphasizing reflective dialogue and collaborative interaction; and (3) evaluation results are utilized to refine supervision programs, address teachers’ instructional challenges, and adjust coaching strategies to support continuous professional development. Overall, the study concludes that coaching-based academic supervision contributes to improved teacher performance through participatory planning, structured and supportive implementation, and reflective evaluation that fosters professional growth and sustainable instructional improvement.

Abstract

Branding and Media Promotion Strategies to Enhance Public Interest in Public High Schools. Rapid technological advancements and significant population growth are reshaping communication patterns, preferences, and societal behavior. This presents challenges for schools in effectively conducting outreach and promotion amidst increasingly fierce competition among educational institutions. This study aims to analyze Branding and Media Promotion Strategies to Enhance Public Interest. The research method used was a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collection techniques including passive participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. Research shows that branding strategies are implemented through the development of a structured promotional program timeline, ensuring each activity is documented and serves as an ongoing promotional tool. The curriculum governance strategy developed is not only oriented towards achieving national competency standards but is also tailored to local needs and student potential. This way, the curriculum becomes flexible and relevant, improving the quality of education and encouraging the achievement of more optimal learning objectives. These findings recommend that schools continue to optimize the use of technology media, strengthen collaboration, and adapt the curriculum to local needs as a sustainable branding strategy.

Abstract

Teachers’ performance at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Negeri (MIN) in Aceh Barat Daya remains suboptimal, shows by low discipline, monotonous teaching practices, limited use of technology, inadequate supporting facilities, and an unconducive work environment. This condition is suspected to be influenced by the ineffective leadership of the madrasah principal and a less supportive work environment. This study aims to analyze the influence of the principal’s leadership and the work environment on teachers’ performance, both partially and simultaneously. A quantitative approach with an explanatory research method was employed. The research population consisted of all teachers from five MINs in Aceh Barat Daya, with a sample of 103 teachers selected using a random sampling technique. Data were collected through questionnaires and documentation, and analyzed using the Partial Least Squares–Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) method with the assistance of SmartPLS version 4 software. The results revealed that the principal’s leadership had a positive and significant effect on teachers’ performance, with a path coefficient of 0.313. The work environment also had a positive and significant effect, with a path coefficient of 0.560. Simultaneously, the two variables contributed 64.1% to the improvement of teachers’ performance, while remaining percentage was influenced by other factors outside the scope of this study. Effective, participatory, and communicative leadership, along with a comfortable and harmonious work environment, are key factors in enhancing teachers’ professionalism, creativity, and productivity in the madrasah. These findings are expected to serve as a reference for schools and policymakers in designing strategies to improve the quality of learning
