Abstract

Background: Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in Indonesia. As a culturally rich country, Indonesia has various traditional medicines that are passed through generations to maintain health conditions as local wisdom in the society. A combination of conventional complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is often used by cancer patients. This study aims to describe the use of complementary and alternative medicine among cervical cancer patients in H. Adam Malik Hospital Medan.Method: This is a descriptive observational study with a cross-sectional design. Subjects were patients diagnosed with cervical cancer at Gyneco-Oncology Clinic, H. Adam Malik Hospital, Medan. Fifty patients were interviewed with questions about the type, frequency, source of information, satisfaction rate, and openness to doctors regarding the use of CAM. Data were collected from July - September 2023.Results: The types of CAM used were nutritional therapy (39.3%), mind-body interventions (27.1%), herbs (23.4%), massage (9.3%), and acupuncture (0.9%). Most of the subjects used a combination of 2 types of CAM (74%). Most of the respondents (82%) were satisfied with CAM, and 48% of respondents did not inform doctors regarding the CAM used. Conclusion: All cervical cancer outpatients at H. Adam Malik Hospital used CAM together with conventional cancer therapy. The doctors should actively ask about the CAM that is used by the patients since not all patients disclose the information to their healthcare provider.

Abstract

The positive impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is that hospital laboratory services are excellent when other services are declining. Aside from molecular biology laboratory (polymerase chain reaction, PCR) services for COVID-19 diagnostics, public demand has dramatically increased. It is a retrospective descriptive study that uses data on the total number and types of results of laboratory examination orders that have been verified from the laboratory information system of a hospital from 2018 to 2022. Data analysis is presented in the frequency of the number and type of results of laboratory examination orders and differences in requests for laboratory services before and during the pandemic since the government established it on March 8, 2020. The total number of laboratory requests between January 2018 and December 2022 was 1,943,539 services. The highest increase in laboratory examination services was in molecular biology (98.4%). As the need for community services increases for the PCR severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) examination, which is used in addition to diagnosing confirmed COVID-19 patients, it is also necessary for the community to conduct tracing if a family member has a COVID infection or travel requirements and follow-up for hospital employee exit tests who contracted COVID-19. In conclusion, the COVID-19 pandemic has positively impacted laboratory performance. There have been changes and an increase in the number and types of laboratory examination services and personal performance and management in laboratories.

Abstract

Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) is a leading cause of death worldwide, with platelet activation playing a crucial role in the formation and evolution of atherothrombosis. Platelet indices, such as Mean Platelet Volume (MPV) and Immature Platelet Fraction (IPF), play a significant role as indicators of platelet activation. Troponin-I is a specific protein for the myocardium and serves as an ideal biomarker, providing crucial insights into the extent of myocardial damage. This study aims to identify the relationship between MPV and IPF with Troponin-I levels in patients with ACS. This research was a cross-sectional study involving 52 ACS patients undergoing treatment at H. Adam Malik Hospital, Medan, from February 2023 to May 2023. Blood samples were taken upon admission and examinations for MPV, IPF, and Troponin-I were conducted. The data were analyzed using SPSS software, and the Spearman test was employed. A p-value less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. No correlation was found between MPV and Troponin-I, with a p-value of 0.251. Similarly, there was no correlation between IPF and Troponin-I, with a p-value of 0.090. However, a strong correlation was observed between MPV and IPF, with a p-value < 0.001 and an r-value of 0.840. The findings indicate insignificant results between MPV and IPF values in relation to Troponin-I levels in ACS patients.

Abstract

Dengue is a viral infectious disease with a wide spectrum of clinical severity, ranging from mild dengue to severe forms with serious complications. Hematologic markers such as the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) have been studied as prognostic indicators in various infections, including dengue. Method This was an observational analytic cross-sectional study involving 128 dengue patients admitted to H. Adam Malik General Hospital, Medan. Demographic data and laboratory parameters were analyzed using correlation and comparison tests across severity levels. The median values of NLR and PLR were 3.18 and 53.4, respectively. A positive correlation was observed between NLR and dengue severity, while PLR showed a decreasing trend as severity increased. The lowest PLR values were found in patients with DHF grade II and DSS. NLR and PLR have potential as prognostic biomarkers for predicting the severity and complications of dengue virus infection. Further studies with larger populations are needed for validation. Keywords: Biomarker, dengue,  severity.
