Abstract

Papaya is a fruit that is often consumed in Indonesia and has increased consumption from 2015-2016 based on SUSENAS 2016. Papaya has high water content (85-90%) and the pH is near neutral. This makes papaya vulnerable and suitable medium for the growth of pathogenic microbes. The presence of pathogenic microbes in papaya can cause health problems for those who consumed them. Objectives this study was to observe the microbial content of sliced papaya in the Universitas Sumatera Utara. Method this research was carried out by conducting laboratory tests and the results obtained in the form of a description of microbial content in papaya cut samples. The content of coliform microbes in sliced papaya was tested using the Most Probable Number (MPN) method and biochemical identification. Papaya samples were selected using total sampling method from the University of Sumatera Utara. Results A total of 14 sliced papaya samples were analysed in this study. By using the MPN test it was found that all papaya samples had a microbial threshold exceeding those determined by SNI 7388: 2009 which is below <20 / g. A total of 9 papaya samples (64.28%) contained Klebsiella sp. bacteria, 5 samples (35.72%) contained E.coli bacteria. Conclusions Bacteria found in this study were Escherichia coli and Klebsiella sp. The presence of microbial content in the sliced papaya sample that exceeds the threshold must be a concern of various parties in the surveillance of snacks being sold.

Abstract

Fish is one of the most commonly consumed protein sources. Fish are at risk as a medium for the growth of microbial contaminants that can cause foodborne diseases. This disease can cause diarrhea and even death.Contaminant microbes can be found in foods consumed raw, such as Naniura, a typical Batak cuisine in the form of raw carp. Various natural spices such as lime and orange also have potential as antimicrobials. This study aimed to determine the antimicrobial potential of lime and orange juice in fresh carp samples. This study used extracts of lime and orange with concentrations of 6.25%, 12.5%, 25%, and 50%, respectively. The sample used is carp meat. The bacteria present in the sample were counted using the Total Plate Count (TPC) method before and after lime and lime extract administration. The results showed that before administering the two extracts, the total colonies in the sample could not be counted. The antimicrobial effect of orange juice extract began to be seen at a concentration of 12.5%, while in lime, it was only seen at a concentration of 50%. From the results of this study, it was concluded that orange juice extract had a better antimicrobial effect than lime.

Abstract

The nutritional status of patients is one factor that influences the length of stay. This study is an analytic study with a cross-sectional design aiming to observe nutritional status, length of treatment, and the relationship between the two variables. The population in this study were patients aged 19-64 years who were treated in the Internal Medicine KSM at USU Hospital in the period August to October 2019. 52 patients were the study samples, with consecutive sampling as the sample selection technique used. We collected research data as nutritional status and length of stay through anthropometric measurements and structured interviews. We distinguish nutritional status based on Body Mass Index (BMI) and Subjective Global Assessment (SGA). The results showed 34 patients (65.4%) based on BMI values decreased nutritional status from 21.473.79 to 21.183.83 Kg /m2. Based on SGA, 32 patients (61.5%) experienced a decrease in score. The mean treatment period was 5.021.36 days. From the chi-square test results, it is known that changes in nutritional status based on BMI have a significant relationship to the length of stay with a p-value 0.05.

Abstract

Obesity is a body condition caused by an energy imbalance that is closely relatedto diet. Obese people experience chronic low-grade inflammation in the body that can lead tochronic disease due to the production of inflammatory markers from adipose tissue, one ofwhich is the acute phase protein C-reactive protein (CRP), which is closely related to diet.The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between dietary intake andinflammatory markers (high sensitivity C-reactive protein, hs-CRP) in obese people. Therewere 34 men and women aged 19-59 years with BMI 25.0 kg/m2 tested for hsCRP blood andassessed dietary intake using the food frequency questionnaires (FFQ) method. Therelationship between dietary intake and hsCRP was assessed using the Spearman correlation.Intake of calories, protein, fat, carbohydrates, fiber, PUFA, and cholesterol did not have asignificant relationship with hsCRP (p 0.05). Dietary intake is not associated with hsCRP.

Abstract

Water is an essential nutrient needed by the body. Humans cannot produce water to meet their bodily fluid needs. Data in 2016 on fluid intake in Indonesia shows that 22% of children aged 4-9 have deficiency fluids, 21% in children aged 10-17 years, and 28% at 18-65. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between the level of knowledge about body fluids and hydration status in medical students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatra. This type of research is analytic with a cross-sectional design and using a simple random sampling technique with 99 students as the research sample. The variables studied were the level of knowledge measured by a questionnaire and the hydration status obtained by comparing the urine color with the PURI card. The results showed that most of the samples had a moderate level of knowledge about fluids (51.5%) and were dehydrated (48.5%). From the results of statistical tests using Chi-squared with ? value = 0.05, it is known that there is a relationship between the level of knowledge and hydration status (p = 0.034).

Abstract

Background: Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in Indonesia. As a culturally rich country, Indonesia has various traditional medicines that are passed through generations to maintain health conditions as local wisdom in the society. A combination of conventional complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is often used by cancer patients. This study aims to describe the use of complementary and alternative medicine among cervical cancer patients in H. Adam Malik Hospital Medan.Method: This is a descriptive observational study with a cross-sectional design. Subjects were patients diagnosed with cervical cancer at Gyneco-Oncology Clinic, H. Adam Malik Hospital, Medan. Fifty patients were interviewed with questions about the type, frequency, source of information, satisfaction rate, and openness to doctors regarding the use of CAM. Data were collected from July - September 2023.Results: The types of CAM used were nutritional therapy (39.3%), mind-body interventions (27.1%), herbs (23.4%), massage (9.3%), and acupuncture (0.9%). Most of the subjects used a combination of 2 types of CAM (74%). Most of the respondents (82%) were satisfied with CAM, and 48% of respondents did not inform doctors regarding the CAM used.Conclusion: All cervical cancer outpatients at H. Adam Malik Hospital used CAM together with conventional cancer therapy. The doctors should actively ask about the CAM that is used by the patients since not all patients disclose the information to their healthcare provider.

Abstract

Background: In Indonesia, the prevalence of hypertension was found to increase from 25.8% (2013) to 34.1% (2018). In additon, patients with this medical condition are generally required to adhere to lifelong anti-hypertensive drugs for blood pressure control. However, recent studies have suggested the use of tea containing active compounds Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), which can lower blood pressure. Objectives: This study aimed to provide an overview of active compounds in tea with the potential to lower blood pressure. Methods: The data used were obtained from sources related to randomized controlled clinical trials searched through the Pubmed page in the 2017-2022 period, with various keywords such as tea, blood pressure, and hypertension. Discussions: Out of 35 studies reviewed, a total of 9 were obtained from the literature search. The results showed that EGCG in capsule form with a dose range of 75-300 mg could reduce blood pressure significantly, as observed in studies with capsules containing anthocyanins and polyphenols. Although 4 studies used tea beverages as intervention materials, there was no significant decrease in blood pressure. Furthermore, 2 studies showed a significant variation due to differences in the levels of active compounds and the presence of caffeine in tea, which affected blood pressure measurements. Conclusions: The use of active compounds in tea, particularly EGCG, in recent clinical trials on blood pressure regulation has shown a significant reduction in hypertension. Therefore, exploiting the potential of EGCG in a larger sample size could serve as a promising avenue for future studies.

Abstract

Food safety is a global issue that directly affects a person's health. Foods that are unsafe to consume will cause various diseases from diarrhea to cancer. Around 420,000 people die every year from food poisoning. Various measures to prevent food poisoning must be taken from an early age, such as washing hands before and during food processing, preventing cross contamination, cooking food thoroughly and so on. This community service was carried out in Pekan Tanjung Beringin Village with the aim of knowing food safety in the area. Service activities are carried out through five stages, namely socialization, data collection, data analysis and mapping, counseling and focus group discussions, and cross-sectoral outreach. From the results of data collection and analysis, policies are created that aim to improve the level of public health, especially in terms of food safety. A total of 15 hamlets with 398 participants were included in this service activity. In general, hamlets 1-15 are considered good in terms of food processing. There are certain points that must be improved together by the community, the Community Health Center, and the local government in assisting proper and safe food processing in the Tanjung Beringin area.

Abstract

Child health is a crucial issue for the future of the nation, where nutrition is a major concern. Nutritional disorders in children can lead to obesity, learning disabilities, developmental disorders, chronic diseases, and cancer, influenced by genetic factors, socio-economics, parental education, history of infection, and intake patterns. Anthropometric measurements are used to detect these disorders. This community service activity aims to provide socialization about balanced nutrition through the concept of “Isi Piringku” and prevention of helminthiasis, as well as measuring the nutritional status of 316 students of SD Negeri 133888. The results showed that 87% of students had good nutritional status, while 13% had nutritional disorders, consisting of 5.4% undernutrition, 3.8% overnutrition, and 3.8% obesity. Further research is needed to identify factors that contribute to these nutritional disorders, so that appropriate interventions in community service activities can be designed to reduce the prevalence of malnutrition in the future.

Abstract

Background: Despite the increasing prevalence of overnutrition, the increasing number of children with Down syndrome, followed by the higher risk of children with Down syndrome to experience overnutrition, research conducted on factors that influence the nutritional status of children with Down syndrome is still limited in Indonesia. This research was conducted to look at the comparison of factors affecting the nutritional status of children with Down syndrome in the 7-12-year-old age group in Medan.Subjects dan Method: This research is an analytical cross-sectional study design. This research was conducted by distributing questionnaires to mothers of children with Down syndrome at POTADS Medan. The sampling method used is purposive sampling and data that meets the inclusion and exclusion criteria is selected. The number of samples were 30 children with Down syndrome. The data is then analyzed with Spearman’s correlation using SPSS with children’s nutritional status as the dependent factor and paternal education, maternal education, total parents’ earnings, children's energy intake, children’s diet quality, children’s physical activity, and maternal nutritional knowledge as the independent factors.Results: Correlations were found between the nutritional status of the children and paternal education (p= 0.019; r= -0.42), between children’s nutritional status and children's energy intake (p= 0.002; r= 0.55), and between children’s nutritional status and children’s diet quality (p= 0.015; r= -0.44) with confidence interval at 95%.Conclusion: Strong negative correlation against children’s nutritional status was found in paternal education and children's diet quality, while strong positive correlation was found in children’s energy intake. Indirect correlations against nutritional status were found in maternal education, parents’ total income, and maternal nutritional knowledge score. Keywords: down syndrome, diet quality, bmi.
