Abstract

The problem of open defecation (BABS) and the lack of proper toilet infrastructure for the residents of Cikoneng Village, RT 2, Bandung Regency can have a negative impact, especially on the health aspect. The economic situation and lack of public awareness of cleanliness are factors that lead to many latrines being covered only by tarpaulins with bamboo/wooden walls. The communal latrines previously available in Cikoneng village were even less effective due to their non-strategic location and water quantity problems. The purpose of this research is to plan the construction of a Pour and Flush Toilet (PFT) in RT 02 by conducting observations, questionnaires and analysis of technical and non-technical aspects to achieve good sanitation. The results of the research show that 100% of the residents of Kampung Cikoneng RT 2 are aware of the importance of PFT and are willing to participate in the construction, which consists of 4 toilet units and a septic tank with a length of 8.5 m, width of 9 m and depth/height of 8.5 m.

Abstract

Abstract Rainwater harvesting system (RWH) is a technology to collect and store rainwater as an alternative clean water source. The aim of this study to plan RWH, including determining strategies, feasibility analysis based on rainwater quality and quantity, and planning basic engineering design of RWH. The planning was carried out in Jelegong Village, Bandung Regency, an area with critical water catchment conditions that has not been served by clean water piping networks, and only uses groundwater with limited availability as the only source of water in the dry season. Primary data were collected through field surveys and sampling of rainwater quality in the early rainy period (September, 2022). The selected catchment area is the roof surface of the house. In terms of quantity, with 55 houses served, the potential rainwater supply (4,318.88 m3 / year) can meet the needs of non-drinking water use (2,369.65 m3 / year) such as bathing activities, toilet needs, and laundry activities. In terms of quality, rainwater color parameters have not met the quality of clean water based on Permenkes 32/2017. Communal RWH is planned due to limited land and high population density. The collected rainwater will go through a disinfection and filtration process to meet clean water quality standards, then be stored in ground tanks (70 m3) and roof tanks (5 m3) to be distributed to each house. Thus, the planned RWH is able to provide alternative sources of clean water for communities in the Jelegong Village area.

Abstract

The problem of plastic waste generation is increasingly pressing in Indonesia. Thermal technology offers an alternative solution that is more environmentally friendly in managing plastic waste. This literature study aims to compare pyrolysis and gasification technologies in converting plastic waste into energy. The analysis was carried out by reviewing various relevant studies. The results of the study indicate that both technologies have the potential to reduce plastic waste generation and produce value-added products. Pyrolysis is a thermal decomposition process without oxygen that produces oil, gas, and charcoal. Gasification produces syngas that can be used as fuel. This process requires limited oxygen and produces more diverse emissions. The comparison between pyrolysis and gasification shows that the selection of the right technology depends on several factors, such as the type of plastic, the desired product quality, and environmental considerations. Pyrolysis is more suitable for oil production, while gasification is more flexible in producing various types of gas products. Overall, both pyrolysis and gasification have great potential in managing plastic waste. However, further research is needed to optimize the process and reduce environmental impacts. Thus, thermal technology can be a sustainable solution in overcoming the problem of plastic waste in Indonesia.

Abstract

Domestic wastewater service with a piped system by PDAM Kota Bandung currently has not reached evenly and thoroughly to remote residential areas. In 2008, PDAM collaborated with the Environmental Services Program-United States Agency for International Development (ESP-USAID) built MCK Plus (MCK equipped with a bio-digester septic tank). This research was conducted at RW 07 Tamansari, Lebak Siliwangi Village, Bandung City and was carried out in March-May 2023. The data collected was primary data from observations, questionnaires, and interviews, while secondary data from literature studies. The survey results found that 8 MCK were abandoned and had been used as storage areas (warehouses) as well as chicken coops. For the service of 35 households, the required rectangular septic tank are 3.2 m wide, 9.6 m long, 3.2m high and the volume of the septic tank is 61.5m3. From the calculation results, the biogas produced per day can be used for cooking activities for a maximum of 2 people. Septic tanks as a technology for treating wastewater have a good impact on society if used effectively. To get the maximum potential from implementing a septic tank, it requires not only community participation, but also collaborative government institutions to support this program.
