Abstract

In the study of modern linguistics, narrative theory offers a way to understand how language organizes human experience into meaningful discourse. One of the most influential models is Labov's Natural Narrative Model theory (Labov & Waletzky, 1967), which explains that each narrative consists of six main components that function socially and communicatively. The story of Tobias and Sarah's marriage in the Book of Tobit (Tobit 7–11) is interesting to study because it contains a complete story structure and is full of faith and moral values. This study aims to analyze the structure and narrative function of the story of Tobias and Sarah based on Labov's narrative model, as well as explain how linguistic forms support the delivery of theological messages in texts. This study uses a descriptive-qualitative approach with a narrative analysis method. The data were taken from the text of the Book of Tobit, which is one of the parts of the Deuteronomic Bible, and were analyzed based on the six components of Labov's narrative: abstract, orientation, complicating action, evaluation, resolution, and coda. The analysis shows that the story of Tobias and Sara has a complete narrative structure with two dominant stages, namely, complicating action and resolution. The evaluation stage occupies a central position because it affirms theological meaning through prayer and confession of faith. The application of Labov's theory proves that narrative structure functions not only as an arrangement of events but also as a linguistic medium that expresses the values of faith, morality, and divine inclusion in human life.

Abstract

Osteoarthritis of the knee often requires pharmacological treatments when non-pharmacological methods are insufficient. Yet, these medications can have serious side effects and be costly. Therefore, exploring alternative therapies and herbal remedies becomes a crucial aspect in the management of osteoarthritis. Areca nut is a plant known to possess numerous pharmacological properties. Areca nut (Areca catechu L.) seed extract with 25% ethanol has lipoxygenase enzyme inhibitory activity, one of the mediators of inflammation in the body. This research aimed to evaluate the in vivo anti-inflammatory effect of the topical application of a 25% ethanol extract of areca nut seeds in male white rats with an induced osteoarthritis model. The research employed an experimental pre-post design. Each treatment group consisted of five animals. The induction used in this study was Monosodium Iodoacetate (MIA) with a concentration of 1 mg/200 grams BW. The animals were divided into five groups: positive control (Natrium Diclofenac® Cream), negative control (Vaseline flavum), Treatment I (2.5% extract concentration), Treatment II (5% extract concentration), and Treatment III (7.5% extract concentration). Statistical analysis was conducted using one-way ANOVA (p<0.05) with Duncan’s post hoc test. The ethanol extract of areca nut seeds displayed an anti-osteoarthritis effect, with the 7.5% concentration providing efficacy nearly equivalent to that of the positive control. This was followed by extract concentrations of 5% and 2.5%.

Abstract

Abstract

Haiku is a Japanese poem that is unique and uses a minimum of words, but it is still beautiful and has deep meaning. In this modern era, there are educational games that use haiku. One of them is the Japanese literary-themed game 'Bungou to Alchemist'. This game is about poets who are brought to life by alchemists to protect endangered Japanese literary works and eradicate the enemy, namely shinshokusha. Alchemist plays the role of librarian (shisho), who directs the bungou (poet) to eradicate the shinshokusha. One of them is Kawahigashi Hekigotou, a famous Japanese haiku poet. The aim of this study is to find the meaning contained in Hekigotou's four haiku that appear in the game and to identify the cause of the four haiku being used, using Roland Barthes' semiotic theory. This study used qualitative research methods. The result of the analysis is to show that Hekigotou's haiku used in this game has meaning related to life and is used to strengthen the conveying of Bungou to Alchemist ideas contained in the haiku in the form of a representation of Kawahigashi Hekigotou's feelings. At the same time, this game is a place for young people to get to know and learn literature, especially haiku.

Abstract

Kokoro novel by Natsume Soseki depicts the emotional struggle and loneliness of its characters amidst the pressure of Japan's socio-cultural transformation in the Meiji era, namely the shift from tradition to modernity. The characters' deep sadness is often expressed through the style of personification, making inanimate objects and natural atmospheres seem to have feelings, as a stylistic reflection rich in meaning. This study aims to identify the forms and imagery of personification that reflect the sadness of the main character and analyze the relationship between personification and the socio-cultural context of the Meiji era as a form of response to modernization. The study uses a cognitive stylistic approach (based on Lakoff & Johnson) and a sociocultural approach to see the relationship between language style and the context of changes in community values. The descriptive-qualitative method is carried out through the identification of personification quotes, classification of types, and interpretation of emotional meaning and its relationship to socio-cultural phenomena. The results of the study show that personification appears in nature (wind, sky, rain, fog) and the city atmosphere which emphasizes sadness and alienation. Personification also serves as a medium for emotional expression of characters as well as a subtle critique of socio-cultural turmoil, showing how language constructs and voices emotions in a particular historical context. Through the personification of objects and atmosphere, Natsume Soseki conveys sadness, isolation and anxiety in a society caught in the current of modernization.

Abstract

Figurative language is not merely an aesthetic ornament, but a means of expressing psychological meaning in literary works. This study aims to examine the form and function of figurative language in Anastasia Aemilia's novel Katarsis through a stylistic approach. By connecting linguistic and aesthetic aspects, this study focuses on understanding the relationship between language, context, and emotional effects on readers. Using a qualitative descriptive method with the Simak and Catat techniques, as well as data in the form of quotations containing elements of metaphor, personification, simile, synesthesia, anatomicia, and metonymy, the data was analyzed based on the stylistic theories of Henry Guntur Tarigan and Gorys Keraf. Data in the form of quotations from the novel containing figurative language elements, such as metaphors, personification, similes, synesthesia, anatomicia, and metonymy, were analyzed based on the stylistic theories of Henry Guntur Tarigan and Gorys Keraf. This study used a qualitative descriptive method with observation and note-taking techniques. The results show that the use of figurative language in the novel Katarsis is very dominant and plays an important role in shaping the characters, building the atmosphere, and describing the inner conflicts and past traumas of the main characters. Metaphors and similes are the most frequently used figures of speech to express extreme emotions, inner turmoil, and tension in the storyline, both explicitly and implicitly. These findings confirm that figurative language in this novel is a medium for conveying complex psychological messages to readers, while also contributing to the development of modern literary stylistics studies in understanding the aesthetic and expressive functions of narrative prose.

Abstract

Background: Interprofessional Education (IPE) prepares health professional students to collaborate effectively and improve patient and community outcomes. Community-based IPE emphasizes authentic learning, cultural sensitivity, and social accountability. This study aimed to develop and validate assessment instruments for evaluating community-based IPE aligned with the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) core competencies. Methods : A mixed-methods design was implemented in two stages:  instruments development and content validation. Guided by the four IPEC domains, values/ethics, roles and responsibilities, interprofessional communication, and teamwork, three instruments were developed: facilitator assessment, family/community assessment, and peer assessment. Ten experts from medicine, nursing, pharmacy, psychology, and public health evaluated item relevance using a four-point Likert scale. Content validity was analyse using the item-level (I-CVI) and scale-level (S-CVI/Ave) indices. Results: All three instruments demonstrated excellent content validity (I-CVI = 1.00; S-CVI/Ave = 1.00), indicating high expert agreement on relevance and clarity. The multi-source assessment model allows comprehensive evaluation of IPE performance. Facilitator assessments maintain educational standards, family assessments provide patient-centred perspectives, and peer assessments foster reflection, accountability, and teamwork. Conclusion: The validated instruments offer a reliable and context-sensitive framework for assessing IPE competencies in community-based learning. Incorporating multi-source perspectives enhances authenticity and educational alignment, supporting the development of collaborative, ethical, and community-responsive health professionals.
