Abstract

This study aims to identify learning barriers experienced by students in trigonometric equation material. The type of research used is qualitative research with a phenomenological approach. The subjects of this study were 36 students of class XI SMAN 5 Mataram. Data collection used were tests, observations, interviews, and document studies. The data analysis technique used is according to Miles and Huberman consisting of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The results obtained are that students experience ontogenic, epistemological, and didactic learning barriers. Instrumental ontogenic barriers, namely students are still hampered by key things in trigonometric equation material, students do not understand the meaning of k well in the trigonometric equation formula. Epistemological barriers, namely, students are constrained by prerequisite material, and students also experience limited context in solving the questions given. Didactic barriers are that students only follow what has been taught by the teacher during the learning process. This study can be a basis for making didactic designs so that learning can occur according to the objectives.

Abstract

Mathematical representation ability is one of the essential and fundamental components that students need to express their mathematical ideas during the learning process. However, field observations show that students' ability to represent mathematical ideas is still relatively low, including those related to the topic of quadrilaterals. This condition is influenced by the diversity in students’ learning processes, one of which is caused by differences in learning styles. To investigate this issue, a study is needed to obtain a comprehensive description of students' forms of mathematical representation in solving quadrilateral problems, viewed from the perspective of their learning styles. The learning style used in this study is Honey and Mumford's learning style model. This study employed a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design. The subjects of the study were three eighth-grade students from MTsN in Mataram City. The data collection techniques used in this study were questionnaires, tests, and interviews. The results showed that students with an activist learning style tend to experience difficulties in modeling their ideas geometrically when solving problems related to quadrilaterals. They were less able to model and interpret problems in detail. However, when faced with problems that involved representing their ideas to find solutions to real-life situations, in general, students with an activist learning style were able to find appropriate solutions.

Abstract

Critical thinking skills are important 21st-century skills that students must have to face global challenges. However, the reality in the field shows that most learning is still teacher-centered and oriented toward memorization, not problem-solving. This article aims to examine the role of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model in developing students' critical thinking skills through a literature study approach. The method used is a literature study with a review of 20 scientific articles published in the last five years, using the PRISMA protocol. The results of the analysis show that PBL consistently has a positive impact on improving students' critical thinking skills at various levels and subjects, especially mathematics. The aspects of critical thinking that develop include analysis, evaluation, inference, and explanation. PBL has also been shown to increase students' motivation, activeness, and courage in expressing their opinions. The use of digital media such as e-modules, interactive LKPD, and integration with the flipped classroom and STEM approaches further strengthen the effectiveness of PBL. In addition, individual characteristics of students such as interpersonal intelligence and self-efficacy also influence the success of PBL implementation. These findings strengthen that PBL is a strategic and adaptive learning approach to developing critical thinking skills systematically and sustainably.

Abstract

The ability to design learning assessments is an essential competence for teachers to measure students’ achievement, evaluate the effectiveness of the learning process, and provide constructive feedback. This community service program was carried out to enhance the competence of elementary school teachers in the Suela Cluster, East Lombok, in developing relevant, interactive mathematics assessments supported by Artificial Intelligence (AI). The implementation method consisted of five stages: (1) needs analysis through teacher interviews, (2) intensive training on the use of AI and supporting applications such as Canva Magic AI and Almanack, (3) workshops on interactive assessment design, (4) classroom implementation mentoring, and (5) focus group discussions (FGD) on implementation results. Data were collected using questionnaires completed by 15 teachers, covering 13 indicators that assessed clarity of material delivery, trainer mastery, relevance, participation, usefulness, and the impact of training on teaching practice. The results showed that the average score per indicator ranged from 3.60 to 3.87 (scale 1–4), with the highest scores in clarity of delivery and relevance, and the lowest in time effectiveness. Qualitative analysis emphasized the need for longer duration, more varied practice examples (especially for lower grades), deeper materials, and program sustainability. Thus, the training proved effective in improving elementary school teachers’ competence in understanding and utilizing AI for mathematics assessment, although optimization is still required in technical aspects and program continuity.

Abstract

SDN 4 Suntalangu is a school located at the foot of Mount Rinjani, precisely in Suela Sub-district, East Lombok Regency. The limitations of facilities and the lack of technologically literate educators in keeping up with current developments are important issues to note. Therefore, the implementation of a coaching clinic program on the use of website-based digital assessment media as an evaluation tool is a necessity for teachers at SDN 4 Suntalangu in order to enhance their skills in utilizing digital technology as a means of learning evaluation. In the digital era, website-based assessments offer an efficient and practical alternative compared to conventional methods such as paper-based assessments. There are many advantages to conducting digital, website-based learning evaluations, including making the learning process more engaging since students can learn visually and directly. Moreover, assessment results can be obtained in real time, so teachers no longer have to manually grade each student’s work one by one. However, many teachers still face limited understanding in designing and using digital assessment media, which leads to less optimal learning evaluation. The purpose of this program is to equip teachers with the knowledge and skills to use website-based assessment media, to improve the quality of learning evaluation, and to support the achievement of a more effective and modern learning process. The implementation method of this program consists of three main stages. First, the socialization stage to introduce the concept and benefits of digital assessment media. Second, technical training (hands-on training) to teach how to create and manage website-based assessments using both free and paid platforms. Third, intensive mentoring to assist teachers in implementing these assessment tools in classroom learning. The expected outcomes of this community service program include scientific publications in ISSN-registered journals and the dissemination of results online through the Mathematics Education Study Program website, which is connected to the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) website at the University of Mataram. An additional expected outcome is the utilization of the website-based assessment applications/programs developed through this program in classes of certain courses.

Abstract

This study aims to describe students' concept images on sequences and series in differentiated learning and to examine the concept image gap between students, teachers, and mathematicians. This study used a qualitative approach with a didactic design and a hermeneutic phenomenology method. The research subjects included students, teachers, and mathematicians, who were selected purposively. Data were collected through learning observations, questionnaires, and in-depth interviews, and then analyzed using data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion-drawing techniques. The results showed that students' conceptual images of sequences and series were dominated by intuitive, visual, and procedural understandings. Students were able to recognize real-world patterns and contexts, but tended to rely on repeated addition or multiplication rather than using formal definitions and symbolic formulas. In geometric sequences and series, a concept image conflict was found due to students' difficulty in understanding exponential growth patterns. Although differentiated learning provides space for diverse student learning styles, the results show that this approach does not fully guarantee the formation of a complete formal conceptual understanding. Therefore, strengthening conceptual scaffolding is needed so that students' concept images are more aligned with the correct concept definition.
