Abstract

This research aims to determine the types of figurative language that appeared in "RED" album by Taylor Swift using Perrine's (1983) theory of Figurative Language. This research will also describe how the use of figurative language affects the meaning of the whole lyrics in Taylor Swift's album. Data on metaphorical language was culled from five songs on Taylor Swift's "RED" album, and analyzed using a descriptive qualitative methodology. The information was collected via a process of documenting events. The research found that there are 10 different types of figurative language, including similes, metaphors, personifications, synecdoches, metonymies, symbols, allegories, paradoxes, exaggerations, and irony. The song's lyrics don't make use of any metaphorical language, such as understatement or apostrophe. As this analysis shows, Taylor Swift often employs the rhetorical technique of simile to communicate the emotional weight of her songs' underlying themes of loss, misery, and betrayal. The purpose of this research is to identify figurative language in songs and analyze how it contributes to the songs' meanings.

Abstract

Abstract

This research aims to determine the forms of cyberbullying on social media and also determine the forms of disrespectful strategies carried out by social media users through social media reactions. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. Data is taken from online comments provided by social media users on Instagram, YouTube and TikTok. The data source was taken from the social media accounts of Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian. The results of this thesis prove that of the 34 extracts found from the two celebrity accounts, only 5 forms of cyberbullying were found from the two celebrity accounts, namely flaming consisting of 22 extracts, harassment 3 extracts, denigration 5 extracts, outing and trickery 2 extract, and exclusion. from 2extracts, no cyberstalking and impersonation were found from Kylie Jenner's account and Kim Kardashian's account. The next aim is the forms of incivility strategies used in cyberbullying comments. However, only 4 forms of impoliteness were found, namely 9 forms of positive impoliteness, 12 forms of negative impoliteness, 7 bald on record impoliteness, and finally 3 forms of sarcasm or mock impoliteness. We did not find polite restraint because polite restraint is not used at all in cyberbullying on social media. This results from cyberbullying's inappropriate goal of hurting, offending, and abusing people's feelings.

Abstract

In this study, we analysed the social class conflict from the character statement and situation in the film. We analysed 2 problems; they are: (1) What type of class does each character include in the film according to social class conflict theory? (2) What causes the occurrence of conflict between social classes in the film according to social class conflict theory? The 2019 film Parasite was directed by Bong Joon-ho, who also co-wrote and co-produced it alongside Han Jin-won. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method combined with a sociological approach. Based on the findings, there are 3 types of social class, the lower class, the middle class, and the upper class. There are 4 characters for the lower class, 1 character for the middle class, and 2 characters for the upper class. The dynamics of each class are constantly overlapping and lead to issues such as the emergence of various conflicts. Each of the conflicts arises from the class differences among the characters in the film. The emergencies of the conflicts are varied, ranging from: conflict involving social positions, conflict of interest, and conflict of role.

Abstract

This study investigates how Nina Riva resolves her psychological conflicts in Taylor Jenkins Reid’s Malibu Rising by employing Kurt Lewin’s theory of Positive, Negative, and Induced Valence. The research aims to reveal how inner struggles and emotional tensions shape the protagonist’s transformation and self-realization. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the analysis focuses on the novel’s narrative structure, character interactions, and dialogues that illustrate the stages of Nina’s psychological development. The findings indicate that Nina predominantly resolves her internal conflicts through Positive and Positive Induced Valences, allowing her to attain emotional balance and personal growth. Negative valence also appears as an initial catalyst that triggers her self-awareness before she redirects it into constructive action. The study highlights that inner conflict in literature not only reflects human psychological processes but also functions as a narrative strategy to portray resilience, autonomy, and identity formation. This research contributes to the broader discussion of literary psychology by demonstrating how Lewin’s theoretical lens can deepen understanding of character motivation and emotional evolution in contemporary fiction.

Abstract

Contemporary hip-hop has established itself as one of the most powerful forms of social commentary in popular music, yet limited scholarly attention has been paid to how satirical techniques specifically function within contemporary albums as both artistic devices and tools for social critique. This study examines the satirical elements in Kendrick Lamar's 2015 album "To Pimp a Butterfly" and analyzes how these elements are constructed through the interplay of musical composition, lyrical content, and cultural context. Using an integrated theoretical framework combining Linda Hutcheon's satirical theory and Philip Tagg's song analysis theory, this qualitative research employs thematic analysis to identify and categorize satirical techniques across the album's content. The analysis reveals six distinct types of satirical elements: irony and contradiction, personification and allegorical satire, exaggeration and hyperbole, parody and cultural mimicry, temporal satire and anachronism, and meta-satirical self-critique. Among these, irony and contradiction emerged as the most prevalent technique, functioning as the foundation of Lamar's critical approach to exposing contradictions inherent in American society. The study demonstrates how satirical meaning in contemporary hip-hop emerges from complex multi-modal expression rather than from lyrical content alone, contributing to understanding of how popular music functions as a vehicle for sophisticated social critique while maintaining commercial viability and artistic authenticity.
