Abstract

Earthquake hazard has high potential in West Bandung Regency, especially in the areas traversed by the Lembang fault (Lembang, Cisarua and Parongpong Districts). Therefore, disaster preparedness education is needed to reduce hazard, impacts, and increase the capacity of elementary school (SD). The purpose of this study was to determine the condition and level of preparedness of the elementary school in the three sub-districts in facing earthquakes based on implementation of disaster preparedness education. This study used a quantitative approach through a survey with a sample size of 118 students, 36 teachers, and 36 principals/representatives of SD in Lembang, Cisarua, and Parongpong Districts, West Bandung Regency. Measurement of preparedness is carried out by measuring the parameters of knowledge, policies and guidelines, emergency response plans, disaster warnings and resource mobilization in the elementary school then analyzed using index analysis which shows the level of preparedness of the elementary school  . The results showed that students’ preparedness falls into category prepared (index = 75.48), as well as teachers’ preparedness (index = 73.38), while the school preparedness falls into category not yet prepared (index = 31.9) and should improve its’ preparedness. These results indicate that students’ and teachers’ level of preparedness are very good although the infrastructure and the school preparedness implementation are not yet sustainable. The results also showed that the level of preparedness of the elementary school in the region falls into category of nearly prepared with an index value of 56.13. School as an institution and the whole school community should increase the level of preparedness through further study focusing in seismic study and structural or nonstructural study. Disaster preparedness in elementary school (SD) takes infrastructure support, education and institutionalization of preparedness that eventually allows the preparedness actions.

Abstract

The dynamic nature of education requires innovative approaches to teacher professional development that can meet the diverse needs of educators and students. This study investigates the implementation of integrative academic supervision (IAS) at SDN Kalimulya 1, Depok, focusing on promoting teachers' continuous growth and addressing challenges in developing professional identity and pedagogical practice. This qualitative study used semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis to explore teachers' experiences and perspectives on integrative academic supervision. Data were collected from teachers and academic supervisors to assess how IAS contributes to teacher competence, collaboration and reflection. The study also identified challenges related to administrative tasks and institutional support. Findings showed a significant improvement in teachers' confidence and pedagogical competence, with 85% reporting better readiness to implement new learning strategies. Collaborative discussions among teachers increased, with 78% engaging in knowledge-sharing practices. In addition, 88 per cent of respondents felt more connected to their professional community, highlighting the role of IAS in strengthening professional identity. However, 70% of teachers noted difficulties in balancing administrative tasks with professional development activities, indicating the need for systemic support. IAS was found to be a practical framework for promoting teacher growth by encouraging reflective practice and collaboration among teachers. This aligns with the theory emphasising experiential and collaborative learning for continuous professional development. However, institutional barriers, such as administrative burdens, underscore the importance of policy adjustments to create a supportive learning environment. This study concludes that IAS significantly improves teachers' competence, motivation and professional identity. To maximise its impact, educational institutions should address time and resource constraints and strengthen policy frameworks that support professional development. Future research should explore the effectiveness of IAS in broader educational contexts to validate these findings and inform best practices in teacher professional development.

Abstract

Abstract

Background In Indonesia, only 58% of principals meet managerial competency standards, fostering a supportive culture is essential to bridge leadership gaps and align with national education goals. Purpose This study explores how organizational culture enhances the performance effectiveness of elementary school principals, focusing on core values like collaboration, innovation, and inclusivity. Design/method/approach A qualitative case study design was employed, with data collected through semi-structured interviews involving principals and teachers from diverse elementary schools. Purposive sampling ensured representation of urban and rural contexts. Thematic analysis identified patterns in cultural practices and their impact on leadership effectiveness. Results Organizational culture, characterized by trust and shared decision-making, plays a crucial role in enhancing principal performance by fostering motivation and minimizing resistance to change. In this context, principals function as “cultural architects,” employing transformational leadership practicessuch as mentoring and participatory meetings to instill and strengthen core values within the school environment. However, contextual challenges, including resource disparities, demand adaptive cultural strategies, particularly in rural schools where emphasizing mutual cooperation becomes essential for sustaining progress and achieving shared goals. Contribution/value The study contributes by highlighting how organizational culture grounded in trust and shared decision-making significantly enhances principal performance through transformational leadership practices.
