Abstract

This research aimed at investigating common grammatical errors made by students in writing narrative paragraph. This research was conducted at the English Language Education Study Program of STKIP Nias Selatan. The subject of this research was consisted of 23 students of English Language Education Study Program. The data of this research were collected from students’ paper in writing narrative paragraph. Based on the data analysis, it was found that the students commonly made morphological grammatical errors and syntactic grammatical errors. The morphological grammatical errors consisted of omission of -ed, substitution of simple not-past, misuse of ‘s, and adding unnecessary ‘s. In addition, Syntactic grammatical errors consisted of misuse of pronoun, adding unnecessary be, omission of preposition, misuse of determiner, and adding unnecessary to. Substitution of simple not-past dominated the error made by the students. These research findings are expected to be advantageous for English lecturer to find out the effective strategy to solve the students’ problem

Abstract

This research aimed at testing the effect of Concept-Oriented Reading Instruction (CORI) on students’ reading comprehension. This research was a quasi-experimental research. It was conducted at Semester IV of English Language Education Study Program of STKIP Nias Selatan. The samples were chosen by using cluster random sampling technique. The samples of this research were 2A as experimental class (23 students) and 2B as control class (23 students). Reading comprehension test was used to collect the data of the research. The data were analyzed by using Chi-square test for normality testing, variance test for homogeneity testing, and t-test for hypotheses testing. The result of data analysis showed that Concept-Oriented Reading Instruction (CORI) produced better reading comprehension of students than Contextual Teaching and Learning. Based on the finding, it is concluded that Concept-Oriented Reading Instruction is an effective instructional strategy for students’ reading comprehension compared to Contextual Teaching and Learning.

Abstract

Passive is considered as one of the important aspects in English grammar that should be mastered by the leaner. In fact, however, most of the students make some mistakes that can be considered as the errors since it happens regularly. Hence, this research tried to find out the students’ error in constructing the passive sentence. The qualitative-explanative design was used to describe the students’ error. The data gathered through documentary technique was analyzed by using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model that is data reduction, data display and then verifying or drawing conclusion. The result of data analysis showed that there were two types of students’ errors in constructing the passive, namely past participle error and auxiliary error.

Abstract

This research aimed at analyzing the grammatical equivalence between English version as source text and Indonesian version as translated text of Totto-chan Novel: The Little Girl at the Window. This research was designed in qualitative research design. The result of this research showed that there were five grammatical categories found. They were number, gender, person, tense and aspect, and voice. Singular or plural forms was translated into either singular or plural form, feminine or masculine form was translated into feminine, masculine or general, and pronouns were translated into pronouns.Tense and aspect, past, present and future were translated by using temporal determiners and adverb of time, meanwhile for voice category, active or passive voice was translated into either active or passive.It was concluded that grammatical equivalence used to get the closest meaning.

Abstract

Definition paragraph is a paragraph which defines or explains something. In writing a definition paragraph, a writer should pay much attention to the organization and the language features of the paragraph. The third semester students of English Department of FKIP UNIRAYA, however, faced problems in writing the definition paragraph. This case motivated the writers to do a research to describe what the problems faced by the students are. This research was a kind of qualitative research. The result of the analysis showed that the students’ problems were in elaborating the controlling idea which is stated in topic sentences, and in drawing a concluding sentence. Moreover, the students have problems in grammar, spelling, punctuation, and mechanic in writing. Based on the result, it is concluded that the students are not able to write a good definition paragraph because of the problems faced. Hence, it is suggested that those students’ problems need to be considered in teaching the paragraph.
