Abstract

Cat's whisker leaves contain secondary metabolite compounds, flavonoids and essential oils. The chemical compounds contained in cat's whisker leaves have antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antifungal properties. Flavonoids are known to function as anti-inflammatories by inhibiting pro-inflammatory enzymes, namely by blocking cyclooxygenase or lipoxygenase, can influence cellular signaling pathways such as NF-kB which can inhibit the migration of inflammatory cells to areas of inflammation. Objective: to test the anti-inflammatory effectiveness of ethanol extract of cat's whisker leaves in-vivo. Method: Anti-inflammatory effectiveness testing was carried out on male mice (Mus musculus) by inducing edema on the soles of their feet using 0.1 ml of 1% carrageenan. This research was an experimental study with 5 treatments and 5 replications. The parameters observed were edema volume, edema percentage, and edema inhibition percentage. Edema volume measurements were taken every 60 minutes for 6 hours. The results of measuring the volume of edema were used to calculate the percentage of edema, which was then used to calculate the percentage of edema inhibition. Data on the percentage of edema inhibition were statistically analyzed using the One Way ANOVA test. Result: the results of statistical tests showed significant differences in data on the percentage of edema inhibition and the percentage of edema between treatment groups showing p<0.05. From the results of the percentage of edema inhibition, it shows that cat's whisker leaf extract with a concentration of 15% has the best anti-inflammatory effect, namely inhibition of 88.42% is the concentration with the optimum dose.

Abstract

Inflammation or wounds are a response to disruption of body tissue due to physical, chemical, or biological factors. Wounds often occur in the layers of the skin, muscles, tissues, and organs of the body. Wounds cause various conditions such as pain, bleeding, and swelling. Cat's whiskers leaves contain flavonoid, polyphenol, and terpenoid compounds that can be useful as antioxidants, antibacterials, and anti-wound agents. The purpose of this socialization is to increase public knowledge about plants around them that can be used for health, such as treating wounds using cat's whiskers leaves. The Community Service activity was carried out through a socialization attended by 25 participants who were residents around the Lubuk Pakam sub-district. The material that was socialized was about the benefits of cat's whiskers leaves in healing wounds, chemical compound content, and the process of extracting cat's whiskers leaves. The level of knowledge of participants was measured based on the pre-test and post-test scores filled in by the Community Service participants to assess the success of the implementation of this socialization activity. The results showed that cat's whiskers leaves can be used as an anti-wound medicine because they are rich in secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, polyphenols, and terpenoids. The process of extracting cat's whiskers leaves can be done through soaking or boiling techniques. Abstract

Background: Cigarette smoke contains oxidants or free radicals and around 4700 dangerous chemicals. The high level of free radicals in the body triggers the emergence of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) which results in oxidative stress, this can occur if there is an imbalance between the amount of oxidants and antioxidants. In this process, there is a leak of O2 which will turn into superoxide radicals (*O2) which can form pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6. Objective: to identify the effect of exposure to cigarette smoke on the histopathological appearance of rat lungs. Method: This research uses Post Test Only Control Group Design. Samples were taken from 20 male rats that met the inclusion criteria and were randomly divided into 4 groups, namely K1, K2, K3, and K4. K3 was given standard feed plus green apple juice at a dose of 13.5 grams/day. Meanwhile, the K4 group was given standard feed plus green apple juice at a dose of 27 grams/day. However, both were given exposure to cigarette smoke for 14 days. On the 15th day, blood was taken from male Wistar rats to carry out a histopathological examination of the rats' lungs using Hematoxillin-Eosin staining. Results: The results showed that there was damage in the negative group when compared with the normal group and the highest improvement in lung tissue was found at a dose of 27 grams/day when compared with the negative and normal groups. Conclusion: There is an effect of giving green apple juice on IL-6 and SOD levels in mice exposed to cigarette smoke.

Abstract

Cigarette smoke contains a large number of oxidants or free radicals, along with approximately 4,700 harmful chemical substances. An increase in free radical levels in the body can trigger the formation of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), which contributes to oxidative stress, especially when there is an imbalance between oxidants and antioxidants. During this process, oxygen (O?) may leak and convert into superoxide radicals (O??), which can stimulate The synthesis of pro-inflammatory mediators like interleukin-6 (IL-6). In this research aims To assess the impact of cigarette smoke exposure on the histological structure of lung tissue in laboratory rats. A Community Service Activity (PkM) involving 70 residents of Pantai Labu Subdistrict Aimed at promoting public awareness regarding the importance of adopting a safe and healthy lifestyle. During the activity, participants received education regarding The damaging influence of cigarette smoke on the body, particularly on, as well as potential of green apple juice as a natural alternative to support lung health. The educational materials included information on the safety and stability of green apple juice consumption, and the importance of maintaining an appropriate acidity level (pH) that aligns with lung health. Through pre-test and post-test assessments, there was a 50% and 30% increase in participants' knowledge, respectively, indicating that the program was effective in improving public understanding of the dangers of cigarette smoke on lung health. In addition, green apple juice was introduced as a promising natural alternative to support the histopathological repair of organs. The PkM team also encouraged the community to adopt a healthier lifestyle, be more selective, and remain cautious about exposure to cigarette smoke in their environment.

Abstract

Cigarette smoke contains oxidants or free radicals and approximately 4,700 hazardous chemicals. Elevated levels of free radicals in the body can trigger the generation of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), leading to oxidative stress. This condition arises when there is an imbalance between oxidants and antioxidants. During this process, oxygen (O2) leakage occurs, resulting in the formation of superoxide radicals (*O2), which can subsequently induce the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of green apple juice supplementation on superoxide dismutase (SOD) and IL-6 levels in male Wistar rats exposed to cigarette smoke. The study employed a Post-Test Only Control Group Design. A total of 20 male rats that met the inclusion criteria were randomly assigned to four groups: K1, K2, K3, and K4. Group K3 received standard feed supplemented with green apple juice at a dose of 13.5 grams per day, while group K4 received standard feed supplemented with green apple juice at a dose of 27 grams per day. Both groups were exposed to cigarette smoke for 14 consecutive days. On the 15th day, blood samples were collected from the male Wistar rats to measure SOD and IL-6 levels using the ELISA method. Data were analyzed using a One-Way ANOVA test, followed by Tukey's Post Hoc test. The results showed that the highest average SOD level was observed in group K2 (1.76 ng/L), while the highest IL-6 level was recorded in group K1 (4.08 ng/L). The One-Way ANOVA test indicated significant differences in SOD and IL-6 levels among the groups, with a p-value of <0.05.
