Abstract

The increase in processed food consumption has led to an increase in the use of food additives. However, public understanding of food additives and their health impacts remains minimal, especially among high school students. Private High School Harapan 3 is one such private school located in Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra, bordering the city of Medan, which has garnered attention due to the high number of students consuming food or snacks containing additives without knowing the negative effects of excessive consumption. This forms the basis for the need to conduct awareness activities at the school. Therefore, this community service activity aims to provide a better understanding to students as participants about food additives and their negative health effects. The implementation method of this activity consists of several stages. Firstly, the preparation of interesting and easily understandable counseling materials, covering the introduction of additives, their types, and their health impacts. Secondly, direct counseling conducted by lecturers from various disciplines interactively by providing relevant case examples. Thirdly, group discussions to deepen understanding and resolve participants' doubts. Fourthly, a question and answer session. The results of this activity show an improvement in participants' understanding, evident from their enthusiasm in asking questions because they realize the importance of choosing healthy foods and avoiding those with excessive additives. Group discussions help them understand information more deeply, while the question and answer session provides an opportunity to clarify doubts. Through this activity, we have successfully increased participants' understanding of food additives and their health impacts. Thus, participants are expected to apply this knowledge in their daily lives as smart and responsible consumers when choosing food.

Abstract

Skin damage is a common problem that can affect appearance and health. Excessive exposure to free radicals from UV rays is one of the main causes of skin damage, the use of body lotions containing natural antioxidant compounds is very important to protect the skin from these effects. Avocado leaves (Persea americana Mill.) have been known to contain antioxidant chemicals that are good for skin protection, one of which is flavonoids. The purpose of this study was to determine whether avocado leaf body lotion preparations can function as antioxidants and to develop body lotion preparations that meet the evaluation test requirements. The research stages included the preparation of simple drugs, the preparation of avocado leaf extract, the test of antioxidant functional groups with UV-Vis and FTIR spectroscopy, the preparation of avocado leaf ethanol extract body lotion, the evaluation of body lotion preparations, and the testing of antioxidant activity of body lotions using the DPPH method. The results of the phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of tannins, alkaloids, saponins, and flavonoids. Avocado leaf extract body lotion was formulated in four concentration variations (0%, 2%, 4%, and 6%). All formulas meet SNI, with a pH of 7 and a spreadability of between 5-7 cm. Antioxidant activity tests showed a decreasing IC50 value with increasing extract concentration: 12.4643 µg/mL (2%), 4.6300 µg/mL (4%), and 1.1065 µg/mL (6%), which are categorized as very strong. The formulation with a concentration of 6% showed stronger activity. Abstract

Hypertension remains a major global health problem and is recognized as a leading risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Its pathogenesis involves complex mechanisms, particularly oxidative stress and chronic inflammation. An imbalance between free radical production and endogenous antioxidant defense, especially the enzyme Superoxide Dismutase (SOD), leads to endothelial dysfunction and elevated blood pressure. In parallel, inflammatory mediators such as interleukin-6 (IL-6) and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) play important roles in the progression of hypertension. Although conventional therapies are effective, they are often associated with side effects and long-term costs, prompting interest in alternative treatments derived from natural resources. Durian peel (Durio zibethinus), usually considered waste, is rich in bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, and saponins with potential antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. This study employed a true experimental design with a post-test control group using male Wistar rats induced with hypertension by L-NAME administration. Animals were randomized into five groups: negative control, positive control (captopril), and three treatment groups with different extract doses. Assessments included blood pressure measurement, SOD activity, IL-6, and hs-CRP levels. Results demonstrated that durian peel extract contained an average flavonoid level of 16.27 mg QE/g with moderate antioxidant activity (IC50 88.90 µg/mL). The highest dose (800 mg/kgBW) reduced blood pressure by 14.2 ± 3.90 mmHg, approaching the effect of captopril (15.03 ± 6.30 mmHg). Moreover, SOD activity increased, IL-6 levels declined at medium to high doses, and hs-CRP levels decreased significantly, nearly comparable to the positive control. In conclusion, durian peel extract shows potential as an antihypertensive agent through mechanisms involving enhanced antioxidant defense and reduced systemic inflammation.
