Abstract

This study aims to analyze the deixis used in the lyrics of the song "Give Me Your Forever" by Zack Tabudlo and examine its functions within the context of the song. Adopting a qualitative analysis approach, the research identifies various forms of deixis, including person, temporal, and spatial deixis. The analysis reveals that person deixis, through pronouns such as "I" and "you," plays a significant role in establishing relationships and emotional connections between the singer and the listener. Temporal deixis is explored through expressions referring to specific time frames, which anchor emotions and experiences within a particular context, enhancing the emotional depth of the song. Additionally, spatial deixis is examined through terms indicating location, which serve to enrich the meaning of the interactions depicted in the lyrics. The findings highlight how the use of deixis not only enhances the lyrical content but also creates emotional resonance for the listeners, demonstrating the complexity of communication in music through the interplay of language, time, space, and emotion.

Abstract

Vocabulary acquisition is essential for language learning, yet many students in English as foreign language (EFL) contexts struggle with traditional, rote-based instruction that lacks engagement and contextual relevance. This study addresses this gap by developing and evaluating “Lingo Climb”, a game-based vocabulary learning tool inspired by the Snake and Ladder game, tailored for Indonesian elementary school students. Employing the ADDIE model, the study progressed through needs analysis, product development, and evaluation phases. A mixed-method approach was used, incorporating surveys, interviews, observations, and pre and post-tests during small-scale trials involving 24 students and two teachers. Results indicated significant improvements in students’ vocabulary mastery, with teachers and students praising the tool for its cultural relevance, practicality, and ability to foster engagement and collaboration. The findings highlight the potential of "Lingo Climb" as a culturally adapted, game-based learning tool that transforms vocabulary instruction into an engaging experience. While the study demonstrates the effectiveness of non-technological innovation, limitations include the small sample size and short-term trials. This study emphasizes the value of interactive and culturally relevant tools in addressing gaps in traditional vocabulary instruction and advancing gamification in education.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of the Talking Chips technique in improving the English-speaking skills of eighth-grade students at MTs Al-Muttaqin Rengging, Jepara. A quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design, specifically the non-equivalent control group design, was employed in this research. The participants consisted of two classes: class VIII A as the experimental group and class VIII B as the control group. The data were collected using oral speaking tests (pre-test and post-test) assessing five aspects of speaking: fluency, vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and comprehensibility. The findings revealed a significant improvement in the speaking performance of students taught using the Talking Chips technique compared to those taught using conventional methods. The results indicate that the Talking Chips technique effectively enhances students’ speaking abilities, particularly by promoting active participation and boosting their confidence in communicating in English. Therefore, this technique can be considered a useful cooperative learning strategy for developing communicative competence in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms.
