Abstract

This research looked at how the RAFT technique affected the ninth-grade pupils at SMP Jam'iyyatul Hujjaj's capacity to write greeting cards. The research was motivated by the pupils' struggles with writing in their English language studies. This study used a pre-experimental design with a single group undergoing both pre- and post-test design classes. The 26 students enrolled in the ninth grade at SMP Jam'iyyatul Hujjaj Bukittinggi made up the research population. The sample utilized in this study was obtained using complete sampling. Writing tests served as the research tool in this study. The paired sample t-test in SPSS 22 was used to evaluate the data. According to the research's findings, there was a noticeable difference in students' capacity to write greeting cards between classes that used the RAFT technique and those who did not. As can be seen, the result obtained (5.451>2.060) is greater than the value in the table. Based on the statistics, it can be inferred that the RAFT technique significantly improved the writer's capacity to write greeting cards.

Abstract

This research was due to some problems that were found in the 6th semester students of English Education Study Program in UIN Bukittingi. First, the students had vocabulary problem in translating Indonesian to English, especially the ability to use the proper vocabulary in translating. Second, the students had grammar problem in translating Indonesian to English, especially tenses and time condition. The purpose of this research was to find out the type of error that they make when translating text from Indonesian into English and to find out the most frequent error the students make when translating text from Indonesian into English. This research was a descriptive quantitative research. The sampling technique that researcher uses was total sampling. The instrument that was used in a research was translation test. It was a text consists of three paragraphs in Indonesian that must be translated into English. The researcher found that addition errors were made 7.31% of the time, omission errors were made 27.74% of the time, literalness errors were made 13.98% of the time, ambiguity errors were made 17.42% of the time, punctuation errors were made 4.95% of the time, spelling errors were made 3.44% of the time, and capitalization errors were made 25.16% of the time. It can be concluded that omission error is the most frequent error, followed by capitalization, ambiguity, literalness, addition, punctuation, and spelling. This make spelling as the least frequent error that the students made.

Abstract

This research was motivated by the problems of students of the English education study program at UIN Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi. Some students pronounce the dental fricative sound in various ways. First, some students pronounce the sound /?/ correctly, however, there are also some students pronounce the sound /?/ by replacing it with the sound /t/. Second, some students pronounce the sound /ð/ correctly, however, there are also some students pronounce the sound /ð/ by replacing it with the sound /d/. The researcher's question in this study was how students pronounce the dental fricatives sound at the initial, medial and final position of a word based on the PRAAT application. The purpose of this study was to analyze the way students pronounce the dental fricative sound at the initial, middle and final of a word based on the PRAAT application. This study uses a qualitative research method with seventh semester students as the research population. The research sample amounted to 13. Data was collected through audio recordings. Students are asked to pronounce 12 words that contain the sound of dental fricative sound. The sound is uploaded to the PRAAT software. The results showed that some of the students pronounce the dental fricative sound correctly, showed by a spectogram display like a scribble pattern in the focus phoneme. others pronounce the dental fricative sound incorrectly, showed by an empty area on spectrogram in the focus phoneme. It showed that they replaced the phoneme with another phoneme such as /t/ or /d/. Researchers can conclude as follows. First, some students pronounce the dental fricative sound correctly. Second, most of the students pronounce the dental fricative sound incorrectly.

Abstract

This research was due to the problems that were found in MTsN 13 AGAM. The first some of students did not know how to differentiate the countable and uncountable nouns. The second, some of students felt reluctant to write in English. The third, some of students had limited vocabulary. Furthermore,  this research is aimed to find out how was the student’s ability on countable and uncountable nouns in writing descriptive text of MTsN 13 Agam. The researcher used quantitative research. The population in this research was MTsN 13 Agam. There were four classes for the ninth grade students in MTsN 13 Agam. the total population was 105 students from class nine of MTSN 13 Agam. The researcher used cluster random sampling in choosing the sample. The total sample of this study was 24 students. The instrument that use for this research was written test. The researcher gave the students 45 minutes time, and the researcher ordered the students to write a descriptive text. In conclusion, this research has provided valuable insights into the students' ability in using countable and uncountable nouns in writing descriptive texts. The findings showed that the students have a relatively good proficiency in this aspect. Based on the data above, it can be concluded that the majority of the students have good to excellent ability in using countable nouns where 23 students can use at least 3 countable nouns in their writing and only one of them that cannot use any countable noun. However, the same cannot be said for uncountable nouns as there are more students who scored poorly in this area where the total of 13 students got the score between 0-40 which categorized as poor. This could be due to various reasons such as lack of exposure to English as a language, limited.

Abstract

This reasearch based on in the process of learning English. The problem was namely: “What are the factors of english learning difficulties for students in learning english? These problems were explained through observation and interviews with class IX students at SMP Swasta Banuhampu. In this study, researchers used qualitative research as a research methodology with a descriptive analysis research design. The research subjects were 21 students of the ninth grade and english teacher at SMP Swasta Banuhampu. Data obtained from observation and interviews. The results of this study inform that factors of students difficulties in learning english based on internal and eskternal factors. The researchers classify the problems they face from several factors of existing learning difficulties. The researcher group the problems from physiological factors into 2 general categories, namely: (1) pysical health (2) body defect. On psychological factors, the researcher group problems into 3 general categories, namely: (1)intelligence (2) interested (3) motivation. On the school factor, the researcher group problems into 3 general categories, namely: (1) parental support (2) noisy home atmosphere (3) economic problems. On school factors, the researcher group problems into 3 general categories, namely: (1) teaching method is not varied (2) english learning facilities are inadequate. On social factors, the researcher group problems into 2 general categories, namely (1) the living environment does not motivate to learn english, an (2) technological sophistication makes negligent in learning english.

Abstract

This research was motivated by the problems of class XI students at SMAN 3 Batusangkar. Some students have limitations in the knowledge of correct reading learning strategies, which causes some problems for students in writing. First, some students have various reading strategies that make these students have problems in learning. Second, some students do not understand the use of good and correct learning strategies in discussing HOTS questions. The researcher's question in this study is what are the students' strategies in learning reading and how they use them. The purpose of this research is to find out what types of strategies students have in learning reading and how they use them. This study uses mixed research methods with class XI as the research population. The research sample amounted to 40. Data was collected through open and closed questionnaires. In a closed questionnaire, students are asked to tick one of the scales containing 3 scores. In an open questionnaire, the researcher got the answers what the students' strategies were and how they implemented them. The results showed that most of the students applied a strategy based on the highest percentage, the strategy was a cognitive strategy of 10.3% and the lowest percentage was an affective strategy of 6.57% in using the HOTS text reading strategy. Researchers can conclude as follows. First, students use cognitive strategies because they help students make up for their lack of knowledge in learning to read. Second, most students rarely use affective strategies for several reasons in reading HOTS texts. Abstrak Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh permasalahan siswa kelas XI SMAN 3 Batusangkar. Beberapa siswa memiliki keterbatasan dalam pengetahuan strategi pembelajaran membaca yang benar, yang menyebabkan beberapa masalah bagi siswa dalam menulis. Pertama, beberapa siswa memiliki berbagai strategi membaca yang membuat siswa tersebut memiliki masalah dalam belajar. Kedua, sebagian siswa belum memahami penggunaan strategi pembelajaran yang baik dan benar dalam membahas soal HOTS. Pertanyaan peneliti dalam penelitian ini adalah apa strategi siswa dalam belajar membaca dan bagaimana mereka menggunakannya. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui jenis strategi apa yang dimiliki siswa dalam pembelajaran membaca dan bagaimana mereka menggunakannya. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian campuran dengan kelas XI sebagai populasi penelitian. Sampel penelitian berjumlah 40. Data dikumpulkan melalui kuesioner terbuka dan tertutup. Dalam angket tertutup, siswa diminta mencentang salah satu skala yang berisi 3 skor. Dalam angket terbuka, peneliti mendapat jawaban apa strategi siswa dan bagaimana mereka menerapkannya. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa sebagian besar siswa menerapkan strategi berdasarkan persentase tertinggi yaitu strategi kognitif sebesar 10,3% dan persentase terendah adalah strategi afektif sebesar 6,57% dalam menggunakan strategi membaca teks HOTS. Peneliti dapat menyimpulkan sebagai berikut. Pertama, siswa menggunakan strategi kognitif karena membantu siswa menutupi kekurangan pengetahuan mereka dalam belajar membaca. Kedua, sebagian besar siswa jarang menggunakan strategi afektif karena beberapa alasan dalam membaca teks HOTS.

Abstract

Nila Waroh: 2316019, “Persepsi Siswa Terhadap Penggunaan Pembelajaran Online Pada Pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris Selama Masa Pandemi Virus Corona Di SMA Negeri 1 Lembah Melintang Pasaman Barat Tahun Ajaran 2020/2021”, Skripsi, Institut Agama Islam Negeri Bukittinggi, 2020/2021. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui persepsi siswa terhadap penggunaan online learning pada pembelajaran bahasa Inggris selama masa pandemi di SMA N 1 Lembah Melintang Pasaman Barat. Peneliti menemukan beberapa masalah yang berhubungan dengan pembelajaran online dalam pelajaran bahasa Inggris antara lain siswa kesulitan mendapat akses internet karena kekurangan data dan paket internet. Beberapa siswa tidak mengerti dengan pembelajaran online. Dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris selama corona, beberapa siswa tidak mengerti dengan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris seperti dalam kemampuan berbicara, mendengar, membaca, dan menulis. Desain penelitian ini adalah survey melalui pendekatan kuantitatif dengan instrument yang digunakan adalah kuesioner. Subjek penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas XII jurusan IPS, yaitu XII IPS 5, XII IPS 6, dan XII IPS 7 dengan jumlah 91 siswa yang akan dijadikan sampel penelitian.  Peneliti menggunakan teknik purposive sampling. Instrumen penelitian ini menggunakan kuesioner yang terdiri dari 20 item. The purpose of this research was to  find out the students’ perception on the use of online learning in English learning during the coronavirus disease pandemic of XII grade students at SMA n 1 Lembah Melintang Pasaman Barat. The researcher found problems that related to the Online learning in English learning such as have difficulty getting internet. Some students don’t understand online learning. In learning English during Corona, many students do not understand English lessons such as in ability to speaking, listening, reading and writing. The design of this research was a survey through a quantitative approach with the instrument that used is a questionnaire. The subject of this research were students at SMA N 1 Lembah Melintang Pasaman Barat in the academic year 2020/2021 specifically of classes XII IPS 5, XII IPS 6,and XII IPS 7 with a total of 91 students. In analyzing the data, the researcher used the quantitative descriptive technique with percentages.

Abstract

The research was conducted because, the researcher is interested in seeing how effectiveness of three step interview technique on students peaking skill during speaking learning. The method in this research is descriptive quantitative research. The data obtained from the results of documentation and interviews with a teacher who used three step interview technique in teaching speaking. The research used saturated sampling because all populations is sampled. Based on the result of the research, it can be concluded that Three-Step Interview technique was effective used when teaching speaking. This can be seen from the result of the researcher interview with a teacher who used three step interview and supported by an average students result during learning speaking which reacjed 77,27 %. In other word, the effevtiveness of three step intervoew technique was in effective.

Abstract

Dalam belajar bahasa Inggris, banyak sekali keterampilan yang harus dikuasai. Salah satunya adalah keterampilan mendengarkan. Listening merupakan salah satu keterampilan bahasa Inggris yang harus dikuasai oleh siswa yang belajar bahasa Inggris. Listening merupakan keterampilan dasar dalam bahasa Inggris sebelum orang melanjutkan ke keterampilan berikutnya dalam bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini dimaksudkan untuk mengetahui pengaruh penggunaan aplikasi JOOX terhadap keterampilan mendengarkan siswa kelas sebelas di MAS TI Candung. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kuantitatif dengan desain penelitian quasi eksperimen dengan membandingkan dua kelas. Populasi penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas XI MAS-TI Candung, yaitu XI IPK 5 sebagai kelas kontrol yang berjumlah 26 siswa, dan XI IPA 1 sebagai kelas eksperimen yang berjumlah 28 siswa. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan keterampilan mendengarkan siswa antara siswa yang diajar dengan menggunakan aplikasi JOOX. Hal ini terlihat dari nilai rata-rata posttest pada kelas eksperimen sebesar 84,11 lebih tinggi dibandingkan dengan nilai rata-rata posttest pada kelas kontrol sebesar 48,46. Dari skor kedua kelas dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan aplikasi JOOX memberikan pengaruh yang signifikan terhadap keterampilan mendengarkan siswa.

Abstract

Vocabulary is a component of words with meaning and one of the most essential aspects of learning English. However, pupils are not taught vocabulary specifically in school. This results in a large number of students who lack fundamental vocabulary knowledge, despite the fact that vocabulary is one of the most essential components that students must comprehend in order to learn effectively in class. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the use of a guessing game has a significant impact on students' vocabulary achievement. This research employed a quantitative method and a quasi-experimental design; the research population was eighth-grade MTsN 6 Agam students. The sample was collected using a technique of purposive sampling. Students from the two classes, experimental class with 30 students and control class with 31 students, were given a pre- and post-test. This research instrument is a vocabulary test with 25 multiple-choice questions. The data were analyzed with SPSS 26. The calculated post-test result for the experimental class revealed a mean score of 89.47. It exceeds the mean score of the control group, which was 62.58. The standard deviation of each class is then calculated. Using Independent sample t-test, the researcher compared post-test experimental class and control class using the t-test formula. The output indicates that the value of Sig. (2-tailed) is 0.00 0.05. It indicates that Ha is acceptable. There is a substantial difference between students who are taught using Guessing game and those who are not. The result is also indicated by the fact that the mean post-test score of the experimental group (89.47) is higher than that of the control group (62.28). It indicates that students who are taught with Guessing game are superior to those who are not. Guessing game has a significant impact on the vocabulary attainment of eighth-grade MTsN 6 Agam students.
