Abstract

This study examines the transformation of media and its impact on the collective consciousness of citizens in the era of digital democracy in Indonesia. Democracy is not only realized through electoral procedures but also through processes of deliberation and state oversight. The transformation of media from traditional mass media to digital media has altered the ways in which citizens construct social realities and political solidarity. This article analyzes the role of media in shaping collective consciousness, from the homogenization of information during the New Order era to the fragmentation of information in the digital era. In this context, digital solidarity emerges through collective emotions rapidly disseminated via social media platforms, such as hashtags that instantly mobilize the masses. The article also addresses challenges posed by the power of social media and algorithms in shaping public opinion, which is often affective and episodic. Using a social constructionist theoretical framework, this article aims to understand how media transformation influences the quality of democracy and collective consciousness in Indonesian society

Abstract

This community service program aims to empower residents of Ketindan Village, Lawang District, Malang Regency, through the creation of a Family Medicinal Plant Garden (TOGA) as an effort to increase awareness of the importance of utilizing traditional medicinal plants in maintaining family health. This activity was carried out by students of the 2015 Malang State University Community Service Program (KKN) with a participatory and educational approach. The implementation method includes initial observation, socialization, TOGA cultivation training, and the construction of a demonstration garden on strategic land owned by the village. The results of the activity showed an increase in community knowledge of the benefits of medicinal plants and the emergence of community initiatives to develop TOGA independently in their yards. The TOGA Garden is not only a means of providing medicinal plants, but also a space for education and social interaction for residents. This program proves that interventions based on local potential and active community participation can encourage sustainable social change at the village level.

Abstract

Digital literacy programs are increasingly used to strengthen misinformation discernment and responsible participation in digital environments, yet their evaluation may be distorted when participants begin with near-perfect knowledge scores. This study evaluated the immediate outcomes of a digital literacy program delivered to vocational-school-aged adolescents in Nambo and Lulut, Bogor Regency, Indonesia. The program combined conceptual instruction, case-based identification of misinformation, guided use of verification tools, discussion of digital rights and responsibilities, and an invitation to participate as digital-literacy agents. A one-group pretest-posttest evaluation was conducted on 18 June 2026. Of 20 pretest and 20 posttest responses, 19 valid identity-matched pairs were analyzed. Participants were 15-18 years old (M = 16.42, SD = 0.69). The ten-item assessment measured knowledge of digital literacy, misinformation, source verification, digital civil rights, hate-speech responses, personal-data protection, and digital ethics. Mean scores increased from 98.42 (SD = 6.88) to 99.47 (SD = 2.29). The Wilcoxon signed-rank test did not indicate a statistically significant aggregate change (p = .317, r = .229), largely because 94.7% of participants had already achieved the maximum score at pretest. Eighteen scores remained at 100, whereas one participant improved from 70 to 90. Item-level gains occurred in appropriate responses to hate speech and understanding the purpose of digital literacy. The program is therefore best interpreted as maintaining high competence while producing targeted improvement, rather than generating a broad score increase. Future evaluations should use more demanding performance tasks, delayed posttests, and behavior-based indicators to improve measurement sensitivity and establish retention and transfer.
