Abstract

This research discusses the representation of turn-taking strategies in the 2022 election debate of Australian Prime Minister. Therefore, the purposes of this research are to identify the types of turn-taking strategies, to find out the dominant type of turn-taking strategies, and to investigate the non-verbal signals of turn-taking strategies in the 2022 election debate of Australian Prime Minister. In doing this research, the writers used a descriptive qualitative method to analyze the selected data which are taken from three YouTube channels of Australia, and the data were classified based on the theory of turn-taking by Stenstrom (1994) and the theory of non-verbal signals by Yang (2011). As a result, the writers found 299 utterances containing turn-taking. The writers found that the debaters used all kinds of turn-taking strategy in their utterances. But, the most dominant turn-taking strategy used is holding the turn (178 utterances), followed by taking the turn (108 utterances), and yielding the turn (13 utterances). The debate is dominated by holding the turn strategy because the debaters were always trying to hold their turn to express their points of view. In order to hold the turn to speak, the debaters mostly used verbal fillers (124 utterances)—can be seen in appendix A—which gives the biggest contribution to the percentage. The rest are not give as big contribution as verbal fillers. And there are 5 situations where the debaters are noticed using non-verbal signals such as body movement, hand gestures, head movement, and facial expression, in order to take, to hold, and to yield their turn.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the types of errors made by students in solving matrix problems. The subjects in this research were three students of class XI MIPA SMA 5 Palu who were divided into three categories based on their level of mathematical ability, namely students with high, medium, and low mathematics ability. The selection of these three students was based on students report cards which were categorized into three types, namely high, medium and low, which were then selected through considerations, namely students who were able to take part in the entire of data collection activities carried out by researchers as well as considerations from mathematics subject at the school. This type of research is descriptive research with a qualitative approach. Data collection was carried out by administering written tests and interviews. The results of this research show that students of class XI MIPA SMA Negeri 5 Palu made mistakes in solving questions (1) high mathematics ability students made conceptual mistakes, namely students were wrong in writing the concept of matrix multiplication that had different orders. (2) students with moderate mathematics ability made procedural errors, namely students were wrong in carrying out the steps of solving the problem and students in solving the problem did not reach that students do not write the sign of mathematical operations that should be used. (3) students with low mathematics ability made conceptual errors, namely students did not solve the problems given, only rewrote the matrix members. Procedural errors, namely students are not careful in understanding the question instruction so that the steps for solving the problem are not appropriate and students do not solve the problem until the final stage. Technical errors, namely students are wrong in doing calculations so that the students answers do not match the alternative answers. This research is highly recommended for other researchers to explore further because the coverage of the matrix material is quite broad so researchers cannot discuss everything in this research and there are many more reviews that need to be analyzed through this material.

Abstract

Low learning outcomes are one of the biggest challenges faced by mathematics teachers at SMK Negeri 7 Palu. Therefore, a teacher needs to design an interesting and innovative learning activity so that it can improve students' learning outcomes. This study aims to improve students' learning outcomes through the application of the Teaching at the Right (TaRL) approach. This study uses a type of collaborative classroom action research involving 16 class X NKPI APHP students consisting of 11 male students and 5 female students. Based on the results of the classroom action research carried out for 2 cycles, information was obtained that mathematics learning outcomes through the application of the Teaching at the Right (TaRL) approach always increased. This is evidenced by the increase in the average learning outcomes of students from the pre-cycle of 58 (before applying the Teaching at the Right approach) to 79 in cycle 1 and increased again to 87 in cycle 2. This shows that the application of the Teaching at the Right (TaRL) approach in class X NKPI APHP SMK Negeri 7 Palu has succeeded in improving learning outcomes in mathematics subjects.

Abstract

Cognitive style is one of the factors that affect the way individuals understand, process, and solve problems. The purpose of this study is to obtain an overview of students who have Field Dependent (FD) and Field Independent (FI) cognitive styles in solving algebraic function derivative problems. This type of research is descriptive research with a qualitative approach. The results of the study show that there are differences in FD and FI subjects in solving problems of derivative algebraic functions. FD and FI subjects can identify information from the problem in full and formulate and construct mathematical models based on the information and reasoning made, but FD subjects do not provide reasons for spelling. The FD subject did not use the settlement strategy correctly, and in the settlement process there were still procedural errors such as errors in performing algebraic manipulation, writing the mark of the calculation operation, and the differentiation process, so that the stationary point and the maximum volume of the aquarium were not correct, while the FI subject used the settlement strategy with the correct steps and calculations so that it succeeded in obtaining the maximum volume of the aquarium. Although it has not been able to prove that the stationary point obtained is the maximum value. FD and FI subjects were able to conclude the results of the settlement orally, but the FD subjects did not write the conclusions on the answer sheet. FI subjects rechecked the answers, while FD subjects did not recheck. FD subjects tend to be less thorough in solving problems derivative from algebraic functions and less reflective in examining the results of the solution, while FI subjects show independence, precision, and the ability to formulate solving steps so that they can successfully obtain the right answers.
