Abstract

Abstract: The pressing need for innovative methods in English language learning for deaf students has so far faced serious obstacles due to the limited number of educators with English language degrees. This condition causes the learning methods and media used tend to be less varied and not in accordance with the special needs of students, resulting in low vocabulary mastery and weak text comprehension skills. To answer this challenge, the PkM team from Lancang Kuning University designed a sign language-assisted reading strategy training. The approach is visual and interactive, integrating skimming, scanning and predicting techniques with sign language to help students visualize the meaning of words while understanding the context of the text. The program evaluation proved the effectiveness of this approach. The average reading comprehension score increased significantly from 45.6 (pre-test) to 82.3 (post-test). In addition, field observations showed an increase in students' motivation, enthusiasm and active participation. The highest indicators were on understanding the main idea (96.25%) and cause-and-effect relationship (94.05%), indicating that this strategy not only strengthens vocabulary acquisition, but also logical and analytical thinking skills. These results confirm that a multisensory approach that combines conventional reading strategies with sign language is an effective solution to improve deaf students' English literacy. Furthermore, this success emphasizes the importance of professional training for teachers so that similar practices can be widely and sustainably implemented in inclusive and special schools. Keyword: Sign Language; Reading Strategy; Disability Students.. Abstrak: Kebutuhan mendesak akan metode inovatif dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris bagi siswa tunarungu selama ini masih menghadapi hambatan serius akibat keterbatasan tenaga pendidik lulusan bahasa Inggris. Kondisi tersebut menyebabkan metode dan media pembelajaran yang digunakan cenderung kurang variatif dan tidak sesuai dengan kebutuhan khusus siswa, sehingga berdampak pada rendahnya penguasaan kosakata serta lemahnya kemampuan memahami teks. Untuk menjawab tantangan ini, tim PkM dari Universitas Lancang Kuning merancang pelatihan strategi membaca berbantuan bahasa isyarat. Pendekatan ini bersifat visual dan interaktif, mengintegrasikan teknik skimming, scanning, dan predicting dengan bahasa isyarat untuk membantu siswa memvisualisasikan makna kata sekaligus memahami konteks teks. Evaluasi program membuktikan efektivitas pendekatan ini. Rata-rata skor pemahaman bacaan meningkat signifikan dari 45,6 (pre-test) menjadi 82,3 (post-test). Selain itu, observasi lapangan menunjukkan peningkatan motivasi, antusiasme, dan partisipasi aktif siswa. Indikator tertinggi terdapat pada pemahaman gagasan utama (96,25%) dan hubungan sebab-akibat (94,05%), yang menandakan bahwa strategi ini tidak hanya memperkuat penguasaan kosakata, tetapi juga keterampilan berpikir logis dan analitis. Hasil tersebut menegaskan bahwa pendekatan multisensori yang memadukan strategi membaca konvensional dengan bahasa isyarat merupakan solusi efektif untuk meningkatkan literasi bahasa Inggris siswa tunarungu. Lebih jauh, keberhasilan ini menekankan pentingnya pelatihan profesional bagi guru agar praktik serupa dapat diimplementasikan secara luas dan berkelanjutan di sekolah inklusi maupun sekolah luar biasa. Kata kunci: Bahasa Isyarat; Reading Strategy; Siswa Berkebutuhan Khusus.

Abstract

Pengasuhan anak berkebutuhan khusus (ABK) menghadirkan tantangan kompleks yang berpotensi meningkatkan stres, kecemasan, dan kelelahan emosional pada orang tua. Kondisi ini berdampak pada kemampuan orang tua dalam mengelola emosi serta keterlibatan mereka dalam proses pendidikan anak, sebagaimana teramati pada orang tua ABK di SLB Negeri Sri Mujinab, Pekanbaru. Kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan efektivitas program mindful parenting sebagai strategi pemberdayaan orang tua ABK dalam mengelola stres dan emosi pengasuhan. Program diikuti oleh 25 orang tua ABK dan dilaksanakan melalui pelatihan terstruktur, praktik kesadaran penuh, diskusi reflektif, serta pendampingan berbasis pengalaman sehari-hari. Evaluasi program menggunakan desain pre-test dan post-test dengan instrumen Parenting Stress Index, Mindful Attention Awareness Scale, dan Self-Compassion Scale, yang dilengkapi dengan Focus Group Discussion (FGD) untuk menggali pengalaman dan perubahan subjektif peserta. Hasil kuantitatif menunjukkan penurunan signifikan tingkat stres pengasuhan dari 125,7 menjadi 98,3 (p<0,001), peningkatan mindfulness dari 3,1 menjadi 4,5 (p<0,001), serta peningkatan self-compassion dari 2,8 menjadi 4,1 (p<0,001). Temuan kualitatif mendukung hasil tersebut, ditunjukkan melalui perubahan perspektif orang tua, peningkatan kualitas interaksi dengan anak, pengelolaan emosi yang lebih adaptif, rasa kebersamaan, serta konsistensi penerapan prinsip mindfulness dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Disimpulkan bahwa mindful parenting efektif meningkatkan kesejahteraan psikologis orang tua ABK dan berpotensi memberikan manfaat jangka panjang bagi ketahanan keluarga serta keharmonisan hubungan orang tua dan anak

Abstract

Empowering Early Childhood Resilience: Development of Illustrated Storybooks for Disaster Mitigation with Local Wisdom. Objective: This study aimed to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of an illustrated storybook based on Tunjuk Ajar Melayu Riau as an innovative learning medium to enhance disaster preparedness in early childhood.  Methods: The research adopted the Borg & Gall Research and Development (R&D) model. Study participants included 60 children aged 5-6 years across three PAUD sites in the Riau region, Indonesia. The intervention was conducted over two weeks with a total of six sessions. Effectiveness was assessed using the Disaster Preparedness Scale for Early Childhood (DPSEC) (12 items, α=0.87) through pre-test and post-test. Quantitative data were analyzed using the Paired-Sample T-test, Normalized Gain (N-Gain), and Cohen’s d Effect Size, complemented by qualitative thematic analysis of interviews. Findings: The book offers novelty by combining local cultural values with interactive features, such as a maze game, specifically designed to foster critical thinking and environmental awareness, addressing the current limitation of passive disaster education media in Indonesia. The effectiveness test results showed a highly significant increase in disaster preparedness scores, soaring from a pre-test mean of 55% to a post-test mean of 90% (t(59)=14.82, p<0.001). The impact was classified as high, with an average N-Gain of 0.71 and a strong Effect Size (d=1.92). Qualitatively, the Cultural Resonance of the Malay characters significantly boosted engagement, while the Maze Game mechanistically stimulated planning and critical thinking. Teachers rated the product as highly practical with an average score of 88%, confirming its feasibility and curricular alignment. Conclusion: The illustrated storybook based on Tunjuk Ajar Melayu Riau is an effective, feasible, and practical learning model for enhancing early childhood disaster preparedness. Its success is driven by the synergy between the maze's cognitive scaffolding and the contextual reinforcement of local wisdom, offering a vital model for culturally-based disaster mitigation education in Indonesia.
