Abstract

This research describes about pragmatics in the specific domain of directive speech acts found in Stranger Things: season 2. The aim of this research is to find out the type of directive speech acts based on Ibrahim's theory in one of the series films. In this research researchers used qualitative methods. Data is collected based on utterances contained in the series of films using observation methods and non-participatory techniques. Researchers use identity methods in analyzing data. The research found several types of directive speech acts. There are 35 data types of directive speech acts consist of requestive (7 data), question (11 data), requirements (9 data), prohibitive (2 data), permissive (1 data), and advisories (5 data). In the data types of data found there are different purposes. The findings of this study indicate that the data most frequently found in types of directive speech are questions.

Abstract

This study investigates how undergraduate students construct scholarly identity and express agency in academic writing through the use of modality and lexical choices. Drawing on a discourse analysis framework, the research analyzes a corpus of undergraduate essays from an English language education program, focusing on the strategic deployment of modal verbs, adverbs, evaluative language, and hedging devices. The analysis reveals that students vary in their ability to position themselves authoritatively in the academic discourse community. High-achieving students tend to use modality to balance assertion and caution, displaying nuanced control over epistemic stance and interpersonal engagement. In contrast, lower-achieving students often rely on assertive or vague expressions that limit dialogic interaction with potential readers. Additionally, lexical choices such as abstract nouns, nominalizations, and evaluative adjectives are found to be instrumental in shaping a credible scholarly persona. These findings underscore the importance of explicit instruction in linguistic features that construct academic voice and identity. The study contributes to the growing body of research on student writing by highlighting the role of language in mediating both personal agency and disciplinary alignment in academic discourse.

Abstract

The training program on Developing Teaching Materials Using the Gamma Application for Indonesian Language Teacher Candidates was conducted with the primary aim of enhancing the participants' competencies in utilizing technology for educational purposes. This initiative involved 30 participants from various universities in Medan, yielding significant improvements in their knowledge and skills. Prior to the training, only about 30% of participants felt confident in using the Gamma application; however, this figure rose to 85% post-training. Participants successfully created creative digital teaching materials that aligned with curriculum standards, incorporating engaging multimedia elements. In addition to technical skill enhancement, the training also boosted participants' motivation to learn, making the material development process more enjoyable. Despite challenges related to varying technological abilities and limited internet access, effective mentoring strategies and the provision of independent learning resources proved beneficial. The outcomes of this training are expected to positively impact the quality of education in Indonesia and inspire similar initiatives in the future.

Abstract

Euphemism can be said as a style of language that becomes a better communication tool and avoids important actions or things that are sensitive. The use of euphemisms is used in communication to provide information or messages that usually contain taboos that are meaningful in words, phrases or sentences that contain euphemistic expressions. This study aimed to provide an insight into the strategy of using euphemisms in order to prioritize politeness when speaking in a general context or situation so that it can be understood by the entire community The data is taken from news headlines tempo.co from March to July 2022. In this study, researchers analyzed the euphemisms that emerged from news headlines Tempo.co. Usually euphemisms are things that often appear in news media, advertising media, and also on social media which are currently widely used by people and youth. The researcher focused on classifying euphemisms based on their types, namely positive and negative euphemisms and then analyzes the meaning behind euphemisms in the Tempo.co headlines. The researcher made this research using the euphemism theory of Allan & Burridge (2020). The researcher used a qualitative descriptive method to describe euphemisms. In the results of this study, the researcher found 15 data which contained types of euphemisms based on their type such as analogy and distortion of euphemisms based on their type.

Abstract

Fenomena penerjemahan mempunya dampak yang sangat besar dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Hal ini bisa dilihat dari hamper semua aspek aktivitas sangat dipengaruhi oleh penerjemahan. Contoh yang paling sederharna adalah dari penggunaan gawai Ketika seseorang memainkan game atau menggunakannya sebagai alat untuk berkomunikasi dengan orang lain. Dalam hal ini baik disengaja maupun tidak dia telah menggunakan jasa penerjemah yang telah menerjemahkan buku panduan dari penggunaan gawai tersebut dari Bahasa sumber dari produsen gawai ke Bahasa sasaran dari penggunanya. Tanpa buku panduan yang telah diterjemahkan ke Bahasa sasaran pelanggannya (TT), pengguna gawai tidak akan dapat menggunakannya dengan benar. Pengaruh penerjemagan secara besar-besaran juga dapat dilihat ketika seseorang pemeluk agama beribadah dimana sumberberasal dari nya  kitab suci yang sudah penerjemahan Dalam menerjemahkan dokumen, ada beberapa prosedur yang harus delakukan (Venuti, 2021). Seperti 1) peminjaman, 2) Calque, 3) Penerjemahan perkata 4) Transposisi, 5) Modulasi 6) Equivalensi dan 7) Adaptasi. Artikel ini menganalisa prosedur penerjemahan dari pidato Presiden Joko Widodo dalam Rapat Umum Perserikatan Bangsa Bangsa yang ke 76. Hasil dari Analisa tersebut dapat ditemukan sebagai berikut proses borrowing terdiri dari 34 kata, Calque terdiri dari 7 ungkapan, Literal Translation mempunyai 4 kalimat, Transposition terdiri dari 11 kata, Modulation mempunyai 7 kata dan  Equivalence mempunyai 2 katas. Metode pengumpulan data yang digunakan dalam artikel ini adalah non participatory observation dimana peneliti melakukan observasi tidak langsung yaitu dengan cara menonton video tersebut dan beberapa dokumen dan catatan dengan cara membandingkan pidato secara oral dan dibandingkan dengan teks berjalan  yang ada di bagian bawah dari pidato tersebut. Sementara itu metode Analisa data yang digunakan adalah categorisasi berdasarkan teori prosedur penerjemahan dari Vinay and Darlbelnet. Kata kunci: Prosedur penerjemahan, teks sasaran, rapat umum, teks berjalan.

Abstract

This applied a pragmatic study to obtain the types of directive speech acts in the movie “Captain Light year” directed by Angus Maclane. The purpose of this study was to analyze the types of directive speech act contained in the movie. Then, the speech was analyzed and classified by applying the theory of Searle and Vanderveken (1985) to the data source. The data source for this research was the directive speech act uttered by the main characters in the movie “Captain Lightyear”. To get the desired research results, the researchers used descriptive qualitative method. The Data collection technique researcher used observation technique. Before the researcher conducts data collection, the researcher must take the following steps: The researcher will watch the Captain Lightyear movie, after watching the movie, the researcher will identify and record the data to be analyzed, and then the researcher will group the data from the type of directive speech acts found in the captain lightyear movie. The data from this study was analyzed using pragmatic method. The researcher found utterances of directive speech acts in the speech of the main characters. The researcher found 5 types of directive speech acts and the result researcher found 15 data, including (8) asking, (3) ordering, (1) advising, (2) request, and (1) begging. The researcher has found a type of directive speech act in the form of asking questions used by the main character in the movie Captain Lightyear. The reason is because the speaker has the intention to get information and wants to get an answer.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to identify direct and indirect apologizing speech acts in the utterances of the characters in the movie "Venom let there be carnage". The data source for this study was taken from a movie entitled "Venom let there be carnage" in which many apologizing speech acts are found in it. The method used is a qualitative method. The theory used to identify apologizing speech acts was put forward by Searle & Vanderveken (1985) while to identify the direct and indirect used by the characters in the film using the theory put forward by Yule (1996). The results of this research found 14 types of apologizing speech acts consisting of 12 direct uses and 2 indirect uses.

Abstract

This research was focused on investigating the types of conjunction used in NATO General Stoltenberg’s speech. To determine the types of conjunction the theory by Halliday and Hasan (1976) was employed. The research used qualitative method in analyzing the data. The speech used as a data source was NATO General Stoltenberg’s speech at 15 June about Russia’s aggression towards Ukraine. There are 67 conjunctions found in the speech which divided into 4 types. The additive conjunctions were the most type with 48 occurrences, followed by 14 Causal conjunctions, and 5 temporal conjunctions. The additive conjunction was not found in the speech. It can be conclude that the speech contains lots of information which unified into one single text.  It can be said that the NATO General wants to emphasize many things that NATO already doing and planned ahead regarding Russia’s aggression towards Ukraine.

Abstract

This research has the purpose of finding out the personality of the protagonist in the novel entitled “The Midnight Library” written by Matt Haig. The researcher had used the theory of psychoanalysis by Sigmund Freud in order to analyse on Nora’s personality, the protagonist of the novel. Freud had introduced psychoanalysis on human psyche, which consisted of three aspects, they are the id, the ego, and the superego. The design of this research is descriptive qualitative research, which the data collection is using the method of library research and data analysing is using descriptive analysis method, both theorized by Ratna (2004). It results on the findings of 4 data of id aspect, 3 data of ego aspect, and 5 data of superego. It can be concluded from the analysis result that the main character of the novel, Nora Seed, was controlled the most by her superego, where she built her superego personality through her experiences and journeys in finding the right life for herself. The aspect of superego shown by Nora reflected to ideal standard of society’s moral and rules.
