Abstract

This study investigates the need for developing an Islamic character–based supplementary book to improve Arabic speaking skills among students at SMP Islam Al Fahd Jakabaring, Palembang. The background of this research stems from the low communicative competence of students, which is influenced by grammar-dominated instruction and the limited availability of contextual learning materials.  The study aims to analyze students’ and teachers’ needs regarding the design of an Arabic supplementary book that integrates Islamic moral values into communicative speaking activities. A qualitative descriptive approach with a needs analysis design was employed. Data were obtained through observations, semi-structured interviews, and questionnaires. The data were analyzed thematically through stages of data reduction, display, and verification to identify key challenges and learning preferences. The findings show that students’ Arabic speaking ability remains at a low to moderate level. Most students can reproduce memorized dialogues but struggle to express ideas spontaneously. Teachers emphasized the absence of instructional materials that provide continuous speaking practice and moral integration. Students also demonstrated greater enthusiasm when learning activities were related to Islamic daily life contexts such as greetings, honesty, and politeness. These results indicate an urgent need for supplementary learning materials that combine linguistic development with Islamic character formation. In conclusion, this study highlights that integrating Islamic values into Arabic language learning materials not only strengthens students’ speaking competence but also supports their moral and spiritual growth. The findings provide a conceptual foundation for future development of value-based teaching resources that align linguistic goals with the broader mission of Islamic education.

Abstract

Pembelajaran di era revolusi industri 4.0 bertujuan untuk meningkatan literasi digital. Salah satunya adalah kompetensi menulis di media digital atau digital writing. Tugas-tugas sekolah pun sudah mulai beralih ke penugasan konten di media digital. Permasalahannya adalah bagaimana menumbuhkan dan mengembangkan minat dan kreativitas serta meningkatkan kompetensi menulis peserta didik menulis di media digital. Tujuan kajian ini adalah mendeskripsikan bagaimana optimasi kompetensi menulis di media digital. Metode yang digunakan dalam penulisan artikel ini adalah analisis deskriptif atau kajian literatur yang menghasilkan data deskriptif dari berbagai hasil penelitian tentang pengalaman guru dalam optimasi kompetensi menulis peserta didik di media digital. Hasil kajian ini menunjukkan bahwa pengalaman para pendidik di kelas dalam menggunakan berbagai media penunjang latihan digital writing melalui Edmodo, Wattpad, Blog, dan Wordpress untuk membuat konten berupa ulasan, essai, dan tanggapan dapat menumbuhkan dan mengembangkan sikap kreatif dan produktif peserta didik sehingga dapat meningkatkan kompetensi dalam menulis di media digital. Selain itu, menurut peserta didik, menulis di media digital lebih menyenangkan dan dapat dilakukan lebih efektif, serta menumbuhkan minat menulis. Namun, pelaksanaannya menuntut peserta didik untuk aktif dan pendidik berperan sebagai fasilitator. Sarannya adalah bahwa para pendidik harus selalu menggali potensi peserta didik dengan memanfaatkan berbagai media digital yang ada.Learning in 4.0 industrial revolution era has objective of improving students’ digital literacies. One of the literacies is writing skill in digital media or digital writing. Students’ assignment has been being shifted into digital media. The problem is how to foster and develop students’ interest as well as creativity, and improve their digital writing skill. The objective of this study is to describe how to optimize students’ digital writing skill. The applied method in this study is descriptive analysis or literary review resulting in descriptive data from various researches on teachers’ classical experience in optimizing students’ digital writing skill. The result shows that the teachers’ classical experience in utilizing various media such as Edmodo, Wattpad, Blog, and Wordpress to drill students’ digital writing skill through review, essay, and response can foster and develop students’ productivity and creativity so that it can improve their digital writing skill. Besides, according to the students, writing in digital media is more exciting and effective. It can also foster students’ writing interest. However, it requires students’ active role, and the teacher becomes the facilitator. The recommendation is that the teachers should continuously dig students’ potential capacity by utilizing various available digital media.

Abstract

Challenges in Islamic education related to students' competencies and character development remain a concern. One such case is observed at SMP Plus Islam Al-Fahd, where issues include limited oral communication skills in Arabic and the underdeveloped Islamic character. Despite being enrolled in an Islamic boarding school, students still require reinforcement in both spoken Arabic proficiency and Islamic values to ensure these competencies can be effectively applied in daily life. To address this, there is a need to develop supplementary materials aimed at optimizing Arabic speaking skills while integrating character education. This study aims to develop a companion book to enhance students' Arabic speaking skill, internalized with Islamic character values. The research adopts a Research and Development approach using the ADDIE model, encompassing the stages of Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate. The outcome is a set of materials designed for practicing Arabic dialogues with contextual themes infused with Islamic character content. Overall, in terms of language, content, and design, the developed materials have been validated by experts as appropriate and are deemed ready for the next stages of implementation and potential large-scale publication. The Islamic values embedded in the dialogues are derived from the noble attributes of the Prophet Muhammad, which include honesty, intelligence, a sense of responsibility, and a commitment to sharing knowledge as foundation for character building.
