Abstract

Dyslipidemia in the elderly is a serious condition characterized by high or low levels of lipids in the blood, including cholesterol and triglycerides, which increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. In this community service activity, education and health checks were carried out on 94 elderly people at the Bina Bhakti Nursing Home. The results showed that 90.3% of elderly people had normal cholesterol levels, while 9.7% had dyslipidemia. As many as 62.4% had optimal HDL levels, but 37.6% had non-optimal HDL levels. Regarding LDL parameters, 62.4% had optimal levels and 37.6% did not have optimal levels. Dyslipidemia was more common in elderly women (10.8%) than men (5.3%). Modifiable risk factors such as diet and physical activity greatly influence blood lipid levels. Education regarding the importance of a healthy diet and regular health checks is very necessary to manage dyslipidemia in the elderly. This activity emphasizes the importance of a comprehensive educational approach and program to reduce the prevalence of dyslipidemia and improve the quality of life of the elderly. Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted various countries to carry out vaccinations as an effort to limit its spread. Despite the distribution of vaccines, COVID-19 cases are still being reported. This study aims to identify the risk factors that influence the occurrence and severity of post-vaccination COVID-19 in Indonesian citizens and describe its characteristics. This descriptive study was conducted from January to March 2022 using cross-sectional research design. The study population comprised of Indonesian citizens who have received COVID-19 vaccines and were infected afterwards. Data were collected through online questionnaires. Participants were classified based on the number and types of vaccine received and severity of manifestation. Of 623 Indonesian citizens, 111 (18%) experienced post-vaccination COVID-19. Mild symptoms were found in 72% participants and 12% participants were asymptomatic. The most common manifestation was anosmia (72%), followed by fever (55%). The entire participants with moderate and severe symptoms received the inactivated virus vaccine. Severe manifestations were found in participants with overweight or obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and autoimmune disease. Third dose of vaccination was related to mild or no symptoms. Our study recommends an administration of additional doses especially for at-risk populations. Keywords: COVID-19, Vaccines, Clinical Manifestation, Indonesia, Comorbidity

Abstract

Background: When a person reaches the age of over 60 years they are referred to as elderly. The elderly will experience a decrease in body function, or damage at the cellular and molecular levels that takes place slowly over a long time. This decline in body function can have an impact on increasing a person's blood sugar levels. Physical activity is known to have a very good role in maintaining a person's blood sugar levels to remain stable. However, in reality, many elderly people are less physically active due to physical limitations and lack of awareness of the importance of physical activity in old age. Objective: This study aims to determine the relationship between physical activity and average blood sugar levels in the elderly in Ngrundul Village, Klaten Regency, Central Java. Methods: Analytic research with cross sectional method and collected 237 total samples from the elderly. The variables studied were physical activity and average blood sugar levels in Ngrundul Village, Klaten Regency, Central Java. Data collection using consecutive sampling technique and data analyzed using Kruskal Wallis test method . Result and Discussions: This study found that the sig value obtained was 0.860, which indicated that there was no effect of physical activity on current blood sugar in the elderly in Ngrundul village, Klaten, Central Java. (p = 0,86). Conclusion: This study did not find any relationship between physical activity and the mean of current blood sugar levels.

Abstract

Background: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is common in the elderly, with diabetes and impaired kidney function being potential contributing factors. Poor blood glucose control and declining glomerular filtration rate (GFR) may influence GERD symptoms through metabolic disturbances, delayed gastric emptying, and esophageal dysfunction. Purpose: This study aims to analyze the relationship between GFR, diabetes parameters, and symptomatic GERD in the elderly population to provide insights into their clinical significance. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2024 with 93 elderly residents of Bina Bhakti Nursing Home, recruited through total sampling. Symptomatic GERD was assessed using the GERD-Q questionnaire, while GFR was estimated using the CKD-EPI equation. diabetes parameters, including fasting blood glucose, HbA1c, and fasting insulin, were measured via venous blood sampling. Spearman’s correlation test was used to determine associations between these variables. Results: Fasting blood glucose significantly correlated with GERD-Q scores (r = 0.223, p = 0.031), indicating that higher glucose levels were associated with more severe GERD symptoms. However, eGFR (r = 0.034, p = 0.750), HbA1c (r = 0.106, p = 0.310), and fasting insulin (r = -0.075, p = 0.475) demonstrated weak and statistically insignificant correlations with GERD severity. Age also had no significant relationship with GERD-Q scores (r = 0.015, p = 0.884). Conclusion: Poor blood glucose control is significantly associated with GERD severity in the elderly, whereas kidney function and other diabetes parameters show weaker correlations. Optimizing glycemic control may help reduce GERD symptoms and improve overall health outcomes in the elderly population.

Abstract

Total cholesterol and HDL assessments are fundamental initial steps in evaluating the risk of cardiovascular disease. The ratio between total cholesterol and HDL is considered a sensitive indicator in predicting atherosclerotic events. Screening activities were carried out using the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) approach in adult participants. The examination was carried out using the Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) tool to assess total cholesterol and HDL levels from blood samples. Education was provided through leaflets containing information about lipid profiles and the importance of dietary changes. A total of 62 participants took part in this activity, with an age range of 23 to 76 years and the majority were female. Most participants had total cholesterol levels in the normal category, but almost all participants had HDL levels that were classified as low or very low. This lipid profile imbalance indicates a significant potential cardiovascular risk. The screening results underscore the need for continuous education on healthy dietary habits as a primary prevention strategy. Nutritional interventions emphasizing reduced intake of saturated fats, increased fiber consumption, and controlled sugar intake can help restore lipid balance and reduce the risk of atherosclerosis and long-term cardiovascular complications.

Abstract

Dyslipidemia is a major public health risk factor for cardiovascular disease. This condition is characterized by abnormal blood lipid levels, including LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. Hypercholesterolemia is often asymptomatic, resulting in many undiagnosed cases until cardiovascular complications occur. The rising prevalence of dyslipidemia, especially in low- and middle-income countries, underscores the importance of screening and prevention to reduce the risk of long-term complications. This community service activity involved 49 adult participants in Danau Sunter, North Jakarta, with cholesterol and HDL level screening conducted through blood tests by trained health workers. The results showed that 29 participants (59.18%) had abnormal cholesterol levels, and 22 participants (44.9%) had low to very low HDL levels. Adopting a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet, increased physical activity, and controlling other risk factors such as smoking and alcohol consumption, can help lower cholesterol levels. Routine cholesterol screening is highly effective for early detection of dyslipidemia risk, enabling timely preventive interventions to reduce cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.

Abstract

Abstract
