Abstract

Dyslipidemia in the elderly is a serious condition characterized by high or low levels of lipids in the blood, including cholesterol and triglycerides, which increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. In this community service activity, education and health checks were carried out on 94 elderly people at the Bina Bhakti Nursing Home. The results showed that 90.3% of elderly people had normal cholesterol levels, while 9.7% had dyslipidemia. As many as 62.4% had optimal HDL levels, but 37.6% had non-optimal HDL levels. Regarding LDL parameters, 62.4% had optimal levels and 37.6% did not have optimal levels. Dyslipidemia was more common in elderly women (10.8%) than men (5.3%). Modifiable risk factors such as diet and physical activity greatly influence blood lipid levels. Education regarding the importance of a healthy diet and regular health checks is very necessary to manage dyslipidemia in the elderly. This activity emphasizes the importance of a comprehensive educational approach and program to reduce the prevalence of dyslipidemia and improve the quality of life of the elderly. Abstract

The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that the global population aged over 60 years will increase from 900 million in 2015 to 2 billion in 2050. This demographic is particularly vulnerable to disease and disability, with declining haemoglobin levels long considered a consequence of aging. Nutritional deficiencies, chronic diseases, kidney disease, haematological malignancies, and anemia of unknown cause can all contribute to anemia in the elderly. This significantly impacts physical performance, cognitive function, and overall health. We carried out this activity at St. Francis Assisi, Jakarta, with 36 participants. We perform a physical examination and a complete blood count, including haemoglobin and hematocrit levels, to detect nemia. Among the 36 participants, 18 people (50%) had mild anaemia, 6 people (16.7%) had moderate anaemia, and 1 person (2.8%) had very severe anaemia. Anaemia in the elderly can cause severe health consequences, including physical and cognitive decline, increased hospitalisations, and death. Routine screening for haemoglobin and hematocrit levels is essential for early detection and intervention, improving quality of life and health outcomes for older adults.

Abstract

Body composition is the ratio of fat mass to fat-free mass in the body, which is an important factor in maintaining health, especially in adolescents who are experiencing rapid growth and development. Balanced body composition in adolescence can support physical health and prevent various diseases. Imbalanced body composition has the potential to cause obesity, metabolic disorders, heart disease, and musculoskeletal problems. Educational activities and body composition examinations are carried out using the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) approach, involving counseling on healthy lifestyles and body composition examinations. This program has succeeded in increasing adolescents' understanding of the importance of maintaining body composition balance and adopting healthy habits. Health education and routine body composition monitoring provide benefits in preventive efforts to prevent future health risks. Continuous body composition examinations and education are important steps in efforts to control health among adolescents.

Abstract

Hemoglobin and hematocrit examinations serve as important early indicators of hematological status, reflecting the blood’s capacity to transport oxygen. A decrease in these two parameters leads to anemia, which is often undetected due to minimal early symptoms and low awareness to undergo examinations. This activity was carried out using the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) approach, by examining hemoglobin and hematocrit levels in adult participants. Capillary blood samples were analyzed using a portable device at the examination location. Education was delivered through leaflets regarding the importance of iron, vitamin B12, and folate intake to support erythrocyte formation. The examination was attended by 104 participants, the majority of whom were women. The average hemoglobin was recorded as approaching the lower limit of normal values, while hematocrit levels showed wide variations. More than half of the participants were classified as having anemia. This high proportion of anemia highlights the urgent need for targeted nutritional education. Hemoglobin and hematocrit screening proves effective as an early detection tool for hematological disorders. Education that is linked to laboratory findings should be prioritized to promote improved dietary patterns, particularly the consumption of iron-rich foods, vitamin B12, and folate, in order to prevent erythropoietic dysfunction and long-term health complications.

Abstract

Grip strength is a key indicator of muscle function and health in elderly women, influencing mobility and independence. Factors such as blood pressure, body composition, and metabolic biomarkers influence grip strength. This study examines the relationship between blood pressure, anthropometric measurements, hemoglobin, hematocrit, blood sugar, and uric acid with grip strength. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 34 elderly women (mean age: 72.24 years) in the St. Asisi Elderly Community, Tebet. Blood pressure, anthropometric parameters, and venous blood samples were analyzed. Grip strength was assessed using the Camry Electronic Hand Dynamometer. Statistical analysis used the Spearman correlation test (p < 0.05). Age showed a significant negative correlation with right-hand (p = 0.023) and average grip strength (p = 0.026), indicating muscle decline with age. Other factors, including blood pressure, hemoglobin, hematocrit, blood sugar, and uric acid, had no significant correlations. Among anthropometric measures, calf circumference showed the strongest positive correlation with grip strength (p = 0.063). Age is the primary factor affecting grip strength in elderly women, with weak or no significant associations for other parameters. Strength training and neuromuscular conditioning may help mitigate age-related muscle decline and support functional independence.

Abstract

Abstract

Hemoglobin and hematocrit levels are fundamental hematological screening parameters that are relevant for identifying potential erythropoiesis disorders. An imbalance in these two parameters often reflects undiagnosed anemia, especially in adults and the elderly. The activity was carried out at the Cengkareng Baptist Foundation using the Plan–Do–Check–Act (PDCA) approach. The examination was carried out using the capillary method based on Point-of-Care Testing (POCT). Nutrition education was provided using leaflets containing information about the importance of micronutrients for blood formation. A total of 62 participants took part in this activity, with an age range of 23–76 years. Most participants were female (74.2%). Hemoglobin values ranged from 7.4 to 17.3 g/dL, with a median of 11.9 g/dL. A total of 64.5% of participants had anemia. Hematocrit values ranged from 22.0 to 51.0%, with a median of 35.0%. The high prevalence of anemia identified through this screening underscores the importance of preventive efforts through targeted nutritional education. Emphasis should be placed on the adequate intake of iron, vitamin B12, and folate to promote behavior change and reduce anemia risk in the community.

Abstract

Pulmonary function disorders such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) remain major public health challenges, particularly in densely populated urban areas like Kapuk, Cengkareng, which are characterized by high exposure to air pollution and smoking habits. Early detection using spirometry is a crucial preventive strategy to identify respiratory dysfunction before the onset of clinical symptoms. This community engagement program aimed to conduct lung function screening using spirometric evaluation, focusing on the FEV1/FVC ratio (FEV1%) as a primary indicator. The program was conducted in Kapuk, Cengkareng, involving 64 participants from the public. Spirometry was used to measure Vital Capacity (VC), Forced Vital Capacity (FVC), Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 Second (FEV1), and the FEV1/FVC ratio. Activities began with community outreach, participant registration, brief anamnesis, and standardized spirometry procedures performed by trained health professionals. The results were immediately shared with participants along with individualized health education. Most participants were female (68.7%), with a mean age of 41.86 years. The average VC was 2.62 L, FVC 2.36 L, and FEV1 2.10 L. The mean FEV1/FVC ratio (FEV1%) was 91.66% (SD = 8.07), indicating that all participants (100%) had normal pulmonary function. These findings demonstrate that spirometry effectively provides an objective overview of respiratory health status and serves as a preventive monitoring tool. Spirometry-based pulmonary screening represents an effective preventive intervention to increase community awareness of respiratory health. The FEV1% value has been proven to be a vital parameter for early assessment of lung function. This program offers a replicable model for community-based early detection strategies in other high-risk urban areas. Keywords: Spirometry, FEV1%, Lung Function, Early Detection, Community Service
