Abstract

Background: In 2023, 49 cases of toddler malnutrition were reported in Semarang City. Malnutrition management is an approach to enhance the nutritional status of infants and toddlers under five. The administration of Formula 100 is a strategy implemented by the Semarang City Health Office to promote weight gain among malnourished toddlers in order to catch up on their weight and achieve normal weight relative to their length or height. Objectives: This study aims to determine the relationship between compliance with Formula 100 consumption and weight gain in malnourished toddlers at Rumah Gizi in Semarang City. Methods: This study employed a quasi-experimental method with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The subjects were 26 toddlers or the total population of malnourished toddlers at Rumah Gizi. Data were analyzed using Spearman’s rank correlation, Pearson’s product-moment correlation, and the chi-squared test. Results: Univariate analysis demonstrated that 88.5% of toddlers consumed Formula 100 as prescribed for 35 days. Adequacy levels for energy (7.7%), protein (3.8%), fat (3.8%) and carbohydrate (26.9%) were categorized as good, and 57.7% of toddlers did not experience infectious diseases. No relationship was found between compliance with Formula 100 consumption (p-value=0.075) as well as adequacy levels for energy (p-value=0.869), protein (p-value=0.609), fat (p-value=0.691), and carbohydrate (p-value=0.787) and weight gain in malnourished toddlers at Rumah Gizi in Semarang City (p-value>0.05). However, a relationship was found between infectious diseases and weight gain (p-value=0.047). Conclusions: Compliance with Formula 100 consumption was not associated with weight gain in malnourished toddlers at Rumah Gizi in Semarang City.

Abstract

The Extended Composite Index of Anthropometric Failure (ECIAF) indicator is one of the best choices to identify malnutrition and describe nutritional problems broader. Nevertheless, it has not been widely used in most countries, such as Indonesia, which currently experiencing double-burden malnutrition. This study seeks to investigate child malnutrition status based on ECIAF in areas with very high stunting prevalence in Indonesia. This research utilized a cross-sectional approach, utilizing data collected from the 2022 Indonesian Nutrition Status Survey (SSGI). Study population consisted of children in West Sulawesi Province aged between 0 and 23 months. Following their exclusion for incomplete data and outlier analyses, 1,573 of 1,327 eligible participants made it into final analysis. Analysis employed logistic regression, adjusting for complex survey design. According to ECIAF classification, 25.7% of children under five experienced growth disorders. Multivariate analysis revealed that growth failure was significantly associated with being aged between 0 and 23 months (OR=3.8; CI: 2.09–7.05; p<0.001), male gender (OR=1.6; CI: 1.18–2.24; p=0.003), low birth weight (<2500 g) (OR=6.6; CI: 3.74–11.54; p<0.001),  and incomplete vaccination (OR=1.7; CI: 1.22–2.46; p=0.002).The utilization of ECIAF to assess child malnutrition revealed a prevalence reaching a quarter of the entire child population. The risk factors of child malnutrition based on ECIAF in regions with high stunting prevalence were older child age, male gender, low birth weight, and not fully immunized.

Abstract

Background: Anemia remains a significant public health issue, particularly among adolescent girls, due to its impact on cognitive development, productivity, and reproductive health. This study aims to investigate the association between anemia status and specific contributing factors—including nutritional status (underweight, overweight/obese), dietary intake (staple food and protein consumption), and socioeconomic status (parental education, pocket money)—among adolescent girls aged 12–18 years in Bekasi, Indonesia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2018 across five high schools in Bekasi, involving 345 adolescent girls aged 12-18 years. Data were collected through food frequency questionnaires, anthropometric measurements, and hemoglobin level tests. Anemia was classified based on WHO guidelines. Statistical analysis included univariate, bivariate, and multivariate tests to identify significant predictors. Results: The prevalence of anemia among participants was 30.7% (95% CI: 25.9%–35.8%), with mild anemia being the most common type, accounting for 48.1% of anemic cases. Overweight or obese participants were significantly more likely to be anemic (OR = 3.52, 95% CI: 1.65–7.51, p = 0.001). Staple food consumption frequency also showed a significant association with anemia risk (OR = 1.75, 95% CI: 0.95–3.21, p = 0.070). However, no significant association was found between socioeconomic status and anemia. Conclusion: In conclusion, this study highlights the role of nutritional status and dietary patterns in anemia prevalence among adolescent girls. Public health interventions should focus on improving dietary quality and addressing both undernutrition and overnutrition. Future research should investigate the effectiveness of iron supplementation programs, the bioavailability of iron in staple diets, and the role of fortified school meals in reducing anemia risk in this population.
